is being in keeping with the neighbours more important than keeping DH happy

We live in a 'naice' street with lovely neighbours. Everyone puts everyone else's bins out, waters each others' frogs, lends out power tools etc. etc. This Christmas a very few neighbours have outside decorations. They're very tasteful, warm white, gently flickering. Think John Lewis rather than Poundland.

DH wants to get a ginormous blow up snowman to put outside. I've said no on the basis that it doesn't fit in with the street and that our status as 'naice' neighbours will be called into question. DH is sad. Although I generally want to keep DH happy because I luvs him and who else is going to bring me cups of tea in bed at the weekend I've put my foot down about the blow up Santa. For context I'm not keen on blow up anything. Inside or out.

AIBU to think the 'needs' of the street are more important than DH's needs even if my cup of tea is at risk?

I am not aware of frogs (or indeed newts) featuring heavily in the nativity. Prepared to be proven wrong.

And giant snowmen featured heavily in the birth of Christ? Were they going to Bethleham to be counted in the census too?

Was meant to cover plants & animal husbandry in one fell swoop. One neighbour keeps exotic frog type animals which are looked after by the street when he goes away.

And there was me thinking it was a typo 😂

Ketzele · 16/12/2023 12:09

There is a very posh and tasteful house near me that goes absolutely berserk every year with inflatable Santa's etc. I love them for it.

Thanks Op.... this thread has made me laugh!! Grin

SallyWD · 16/12/2023 12:10

Honestly, if your neighbours are nice people they won't mind at all about the inflatable snowman. It'll make them smile (or laugh). If your neighbours are insufferable snobs who care only about keeping up appearances, then yes it might be an issue.

swearsbytalk · 16/12/2023 12:10

If your neighbours would be pissed off at your DH enjoying a snowman in his own garden for a short while over the festive season, well I wouldn't be so sure they are that nice at all! Sounds like everything has to be on their terms.

MrsSkylerWhite · 16/12/2023 12:13

We’ve always lived in “naice” places. Couldn’t care less what the neighbours think. Let him have his tasteless decorations 😁

dottiedodah · 16/12/2023 12:13

Is Hyacinth Bouquet your NDN? Surely for a couple of weeks ,Santa can be inflated! There are luxury homes near the golf course near to us .Lots of them have a blow up Santa .Surely the point of Christmas is to be a little bit OTT!

commonground · 16/12/2023 12:13

It depends how it inflates. If it is with the aid of a pump or fan you might want to think about its proximity to next door and if they will hear it.

Tbh, 'gently flickering' lights would drive me bonkers, so I say hit them with the Snowman.

MadeOfAllWork · 16/12/2023 12:16

Well no one waters my frogs. Aren’t outdoors inflatable decorations rather noisy?

Is affection not a 'thing' at Christmas.

Peace love and goodwill ...

It's Christmas, just put out whatever you like. We live on a very nice street with warm white lights and occasional extras, I'd love someone to go bad on the decorations like a house round the corner, we've all been just to look at it because it's so fun.

EmpressaurusOfCats · 16/12/2023 12:19

I haven’t got any frogs Sad.

Although I suppose the neighbours would water my cats if I asked.

ChateauDuMont · 16/12/2023 12:20

My husbands feelings come before anything else especially neighbours and I have lovely neighbours.

Virgin birth? In a single sex environment amphibians have been known to simultaneously change sex to procreate.

CherryShirt · 16/12/2023 12:26

If a neighbour popped over and offered to water my frogs, I’d be quite disturbed 😳 (Although I might give it some consideration if it was him from No. 82…)

Snowmen are wholly secular too so that’s a moot point. The nativity is set in a literal desert.
The truly classy do not worry about how others perceive them. Team inflatable, team inflatable, team inflatable!

MuchuseasaChocolateTeapot · 16/12/2023 12:39

Are these frogs indoor or outdoor? Outdoor is seasonal surely? I really want a pet frog now 🐸

We have minature, completely amphibious frogs from the Congo. They are fabulous, can watch them for hours.

Silverbirchtwo · 16/12/2023 12:46

Go for it. The neighbours need a bit of a laugh, get some reindeer too and one of those burgling Santas that have their bum out of an upstairs window (love them).
