Heights of same sex siblings (bit of fun)

Inspired by this thread about the sex of your third baby https://www.mumsnet.com/talk/am_i_being_unreasonable/4959091-3-kids-gender-stats-probability

So thank you blackcoffeeandchocolate

My question is, I read that with siblings of the same sex the elder is more likely to be taller, as they have used up a lot of the nutrition/newness available in utero. This struck me as a load of nonsense.

But more than that, I can think of loads of examples of same sex siblings where the elder child is the shortest.

Both of my parents and their siblings
The chuckle brothers
Me and my sibling
DH and his siblings
DC1 and DC2 (based on same age-for-age comparison)

And by the way, hilarious that all of these from my family are all same sex groupings with no additional third sibling of the opposite sex. I read something else once that said "nobody knows why some families tend to have only boys, and some only girls"

I'm sure there are loads of siblings that do follow an opposite trend, which is why I wanted to ask, if you have a sibling of the same sex, or who is taller?

One or two?

The poll

  • yabu - one
Yanbu - two

My very technical and professionally hypothesised opinion is that since your womb has already been stretched (in the nicest possible way) with the first, you can stretch a little bit further for the second? 😂 in my children's case the second stayed in two weeks longer so maybe grew a bit more then??

3 kids - gender stats probability | Mumsnet

I read in a few threads that the 3rd kid is most likely to be whatever the 2nd was. So, if you had G-B then the third will be B If you had B-G then...

DS2 is 2" taller than his older brother and at 15, could still grow. They were both born on time so no extra cooking.

Hellocatshome · 08/12/2023 21:42

2 boys

DS1 was shorter and lighter at birth than DS2 but DS1 is 6ft 2 at 16 and DS1 according to the red book will struggle to make 5ft 8 by adulthood.

Gro · 08/12/2023 21:43

I'm oldest and taller by a couple of inches. I was terrible at eating when I was a child whereas my sis ate everything so I don't deserve to be taller!

I think it is just genetics.

LadyGeorginaSmythe · 08/12/2023 21:43

DS1 is 18 months older than DS2.
DS2 is 2" taller than DS1 already at ages 11 and 12½. DS2 is having blood tests for growth hormones.
DS1 born at 41 weeks, DS2 at 37w with his twin DD.

MadeOfAllWork · 08/12/2023 21:45

I know two brothers. One is 9 and the other is 6. The 6 year old is almost a head taller than his brother.

CatherinedeBourgh · 08/12/2023 21:45

Too soon to tell for mine (ds2 has only just started his growth spurts) but my dn1 is several inches shorter than dn2. Dn1 was two weeks late as well, so the longer in the womb theory doesn't work there either.

My older sister, on the other hand, is an inch taller than me.

TomatoSandwiches · 08/12/2023 21:45

I'm the eldest and all of my sisters are taller than me.

Moonface31 · 08/12/2023 21:45

I have 2 sisters, I'm oldest and I'm 5'10. Youngest is 5'10. Middle sister is 5'5. People assume she's the youngest even though we're all in our thirties! She just takes after Dad's side of the family where the women are shorter and curvier. Me and youngest take after Mum's side who are tall and willowy. Not to do with birth order at all I don't think.

Highlyflavouredgravy · 08/12/2023 21:46

I have 2 adult sons
Ds1 is 6' 8
Ds2 is 6' 1"

Big difference

Toesaresoweird · 08/12/2023 21:48

2 boys. Completely chalk and cheese physically. Elder DS small and worries about his height because his grandma is under 5 foot and my dad is not tall youngest DS is tall for his age and was a heavy baby like his sister. Elder DS very much like my brother and my nephew and younger DS like my DH.

fleur89 · 08/12/2023 21:49

My sister and I are 2.5 years apart and are both petite build and 5 ft 3 ins.

Nitw1t · 08/12/2023 21:50

I can think of 3 (adult) families with 3 daughters.

In none of them is the youngest the tallest.
And in 2 of them, the youngest is in the middle.

In order tallest first:
Family 1: DD2, DD3, DD1
Family 2: DD1, DD3, DD2
Family 3: DD1, DD2, DD3

So my survey says no to all theories.

Beginningless · 08/12/2023 21:51

My younger sister is almost a head bigger than me. My DD2 is at 5 taller than DD1 at that age, but time will tell…

Devilsmommy · 08/12/2023 21:56

I'm the middle child and I'm 5"7, older sister 5"4, younger sister 5"2. All over the place🤣 my sisters got my dad's genes whose family are short and mine are from my mom's side whose are all tall

8misskitty8 · 08/12/2023 21:57

Both my girls were around 6lb, both full term. DD1 was longer.
Now :-

DD1 is 5 foot 2 at 19.
DD2 is 5 foot 7 and a bit at 16.

Comedycook · 08/12/2023 21:58

Im the elder sister...I'm about three inches shorter than my younger sister.

OnlyFoolsnMothers · 08/12/2023 22:01

Eldest sister is always shorter ime

eldest gets the boobs
youngest gets height

MoreRainbowsPlease · 08/12/2023 22:03

My Dad (the eldest) is 5ft 10, his brother is 6ft
My Mum (eldest) is 5ft 6, her sister is 5ft 8
My Gran (Youngest) 5ft 10, her 2 elder sisters were 5ft 2!

So on both my sides of the family the older you are in the sibling line, the shorter you are.

ALPHAFEMALESINCEBIRTH · 08/12/2023 22:03

im 6ft
sister 7 years younger 4ft10
same parents, mums 5ft,dad 6ft 1

my sons

19 and 6ft
13 and 6ft 1(already)
dad is 5ft6 so dont follow him

Ontheperiphery79 · 08/12/2023 22:03

I'm 5'8" and my older sister (by 16 months) is 5'5".

Wbeezer · 08/12/2023 22:07

I'm 3" taller than my younger sister, DH is 2" taller than his younger brother.
DS1 is 6', DS2 is 5' 11", DS3 is 5'10".
So I guess we match your prediction.

Allegra567 · 08/12/2023 22:07

DS1, longer baby and full term, is three inches taller than DS2, chunkier and 5 days before term. Both now slim adults.

toomanyleggings · 08/12/2023 22:08

I am exactly the same height as my sister. 5ft 9.5 inches

Hankunamatata · 08/12/2023 22:14

Dc 1 tall but now normal for age
Dc 2 average
Dc3 very tall for his age (taller than dc2)

GeorgiePorge · 08/12/2023 22:15

my sister is eldest and we are exactly same height...nothing else similar about us. My eldest brother is a good 6inches taller his younger brother. My partner is taller than both his brothers who do go down in height with age.

I have two boys.. toddler and a baby so too soon to tell but baby is tracking on a higher length and weight percentile than his older brother .. but both are massive really so who knows how they will end up!
