Heights of same sex siblings (bit of fun)

Inspired by this thread about the sex of your third baby https://www.mumsnet.com/talk/am_i_being_unreasonable/4959091-3-kids-gender-stats-probability

So thank you blackcoffeeandchocolate

My question is, I read that with siblings of the same sex the elder is more likely to be taller, as they have used up a lot of the nutrition/newness available in utero. This struck me as a load of nonsense.

But more than that, I can think of loads of examples of same sex siblings where the elder child is the shortest.

Both of my parents and their siblings
The chuckle brothers
Me and my sibling
DH and his siblings
DC1 and DC2 (based on same age-for-age comparison)

And by the way, hilarious that all of these from my family are all same sex groupings with no additional third sibling of the opposite sex. I read something else once that said "nobody knows why some families tend to have only boys, and some only girls"

I'm sure there are loads of siblings that do follow an opposite trend, which is why I wanted to ask, if you have a sibling of the same sex, or who is taller?

One or two?

The poll

  • yabu - one
Yanbu - two

My very technical and professionally hypothesised opinion is that since your womb has already been stretched (in the nicest possible way) with the first, you can stretch a little bit further for the second? 😂 in my children's case the second stayed in two weeks longer so maybe grew a bit more then??

3 kids - gender stats probability | Mumsnet

I read in a few threads that the 3rd kid is most likely to be whatever the 2nd was. So, if you had G-B then the third will be B If you had B-G then...

I'm the youngest and I'm an inch taller than my dsis.
DH is about 3 inches taller than his younger brother.

Of my DCs
DS1 (18) is 6ft 1
DD1 (16) 5ft 8

DS2 at 13 and DD2 at 11 are significantly smaller than their siblings at the same age. Both of them are tiny for their age - DS1 was the same. Interestingly both boys are about 3 years behind dentally (DS1 still has braces as they couldn't fit them until he'd started growing) which would also fit with their growth pattern. All late starting puberty.

I find it really fascinating to see how they all end up.

SleepingStandingUp · 08/12/2023 22:19

I have three boys, singleton and twins. It seems very likely my twins will be taller than their older bro, despite a 4.5 year gap 😂.

I'm taller than my sister who's 3.5 years older than me, and my sister 8 years younger than me is taller than me

Re people who have all boys or girls. They do think that some men do carry predominantly more of one sex sperm over another.

DramaAlpaca · 08/12/2023 22:22

I have three adult sons.
DS1 6'2
DS2 6'
DS3 6'3

lambwool · 08/12/2023 22:24

We are 3 girls
17 year old is the tallest, me, 26 is next, 20 year old is the shortest.

My cousin is 26 and has 6 other sisters younger than her, they're also all taller than her!

Tryingtoconceivenumber2 · 08/12/2023 22:25

I am oldest child and 5ft 4, sister is youngest and 5ft 11 so quite a height difference. DS also taller than both parents x

chillidoritto · 08/12/2023 22:28

It's completely random then

ArchetypalBusyMum · 08/12/2023 22:30

I'm the younger of 2 sisters and I'm taller.

My older sister was a very stressed out person, and a fussy eater. I think those things are more likely to have a bearing on your height than in utero conditions. Most of your height is achieved post utero and it's based on your genetic potential and environment.

cryinglaughing · 08/12/2023 22:31

DD1 - 21 - 5ft
DD2 - 17 - 5ft 10 inches

Oblomov23 · 08/12/2023 22:32

I think ds2 is going to be taller than ds1.

SittingOnTheChair · 08/12/2023 22:35

I'm one of three girls. I'm 5'11 (middle) and the oldest is 5'3 and youngest is 5'6.

My sons are 5'10 (oldest) and the youngest 6'4.

Yuja · 08/12/2023 22:40

I am two inches taller than my older sister

Sahara123 · 08/12/2023 22:42

I’m the oldest of four, and the shortest by at least 6 inches ..

shreddednips · 08/12/2023 22:50

I'm the oldest and a good 4 inches shorter than my younger sister- I'm 5 foot 2 and I'd estimate she's around 5 foot 7.

TheFairyCaravan · 08/12/2023 22:50

I have 2 adult sons.

DS1 is 6ft 2
DS2 is 6ft 5. He was 60cm long when he was born at 37weeks. He’s asthmatic which meant he had a lot of steroids as a child and they were very concerned his growth would be affected.

RudsyFarmer · 08/12/2023 22:51

Two kids, same sex, youngest is the tallest. I know loads of families where it’s the same.

InSpainTheRain · 08/12/2023 23:16

Identical twins, both 6'2". Eldest is super skinny, younger is skinny. 2 mins apart.

Anonymouseposter · 08/12/2023 23:28

My younger daughter is about 3 or 4 inches taller than her older sister. They are adults

headache · 08/12/2023 23:40

DD1 5ft 4
DD2 5ft 2
DD3 5ft 6

DS (13) 5ft 4

Have no idea where DD3 has her height from I am 5ft 3 an DH is 5ft 7. DHs family are all tiny, mine aren’t tiny but on the smaller side of average. DD2 is raging she is the smallest, she is also a different body shape to her siblings they are all extremely skinny with short torsos and long legs she is broader and stockier

MammaTill2Pojkar · 08/12/2023 23:42

I'm one of three sisters, I'm the youngest and the tallest, eldest is middle height and middle sister is the shortest, there is only a few inches between us all however.

thaegumathteth · 08/12/2023 23:42

Sister is 8 years older and 4 inches shorter than me

MammaTill2Pojkar · 08/12/2023 23:45

@headache That's exactly like me and my sisters, myself and eldest are more similar slimmer builds, middle sister is stockier build and even has the opposite eye colour to us.

Dogcatmousedog · 08/12/2023 23:45

My younger sister is 3 inches taller than me and slimmer .
My younger son is 6ft whereas his older brother is probably about 2 inches shorter .

floppybit · 08/12/2023 23:46

DS1 is 17 and 6ft, DS2 is 15 and 6ft4!

SockQueen · 08/12/2023 23:56

I'm oldest of 2 girls, I'm (5'9) about an inch taller than my sister. She was bigger at birth though.

DH is the younger of two brothers but is taller.

My two DSs are still growing but looking at heights at similar ages, DS2 looks like he'll be a little taller.

Inconclusive!

Vavazoom · 09/12/2023 00:00

I’m the oldest of 3 sisters and I am the tallest by about 3 inches.

I have two children. The oldest is tiny and the youngest is an absolute unit - tall and very broad.
