To complain about the fast food sign

I live in a new build development on the edge of a nice town and there’s a car park/shop next to it where there’s a fast food van,

The owner of the fast food van has put up a very ugly sign advertising all day breakfasts (in capitals) at the entrance to our development.

It really makes our development look much less nice and I find it annoying every time I drive past it.

AIBU to ask them to move it or am I being a jumped up nimby?

If they own the land I'm not sure what you can do unless you're somewhere where this would require PP. If they've put it on land owned by the developer or the council, you can contact them about it. It might get better results if the request to move it comes from them. You still have to live here afterwards.

Maybe there are people living in the nice town who think that your new development at the entrance to their town makes their town look less nice.

murasaki · 30/11/2023 19:24

New build developments rarely look good, and frequently have structural problems. You'll be glad of a fry up when you're on the phone complaining about your house.

ImNunTheWiser · 30/11/2023 19:29

You live near a fast food van but it’s the sign you have a problem with?

TooFondOfBooks · 30/11/2023 19:31

Steal it & replace it with a suitably aesthetically pleasing sign. The only reasonable thing to do.

We decided to take this down as it is not in the spirit of the site.

Ghostlyfeet · 30/11/2023 19:32

Wow you've got some horrible early responses! Yes ask them to move it!

🤣🤣🤣

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 30/11/2023 19:35

I suspect there’s little you can do if it’s on their land - or not your land anyway!

Tomelette · 30/11/2023 19:35

If you live in a nice town the people who live there are all probably annoyed about the unsightly new build development!

And some local wildlife that wishes the town wasn’t there!

WeekWeekWeek · 30/11/2023 19:36

Ugh, I’d hate my lovely town to have an ugly new build development tacked on to it.

Those types of houses attract food vans and aesthetically poor signs.

MintJulia · 30/11/2023 19:38

OP, regardless of whether you like it or not, have you checked that the fast food outlet is allowed to put up a sign? Do they have site owner's permission? Do they need planning permission? Is it causing an obstruction?

If the sign is approved by the site owner and the local planning committee then there isn't much you can do.

purplecorkheart · 30/11/2023 19:39

Unless it is huge, blocking the view when going onto main road or on land not belonging to them then they are not doing wrong. This is personal to you but honestly most people going past will not connect the sign and the new housing development or judge one by the other. I would imagine that this is not a huge profit making business and the owner is trying to gain business in quite frankly difficult financial times. I would really try not to stress about this.

canisestinvia · 30/11/2023 19:39

Hang on everyone. Before you all jump in and criticise the OP, you did all notice the sign's in CAPITALS didn't you? Grin

ithinkthatmaybeimdreaming · 30/11/2023 19:40

You are being being a jumped up nimby - sorry.

MegaMeg2710 · 30/11/2023 19:44

Yeah ask them but maybe suggest a new and better place? I too live on a frankly ✨aesthetically pleasing, architecturally beautiful and interesting✨ new build development, and to all you nimbys, don’t be jealous with your terrible insulation, broken down boilers and zero natural light. 💅

Vegetus · 30/11/2023 20:03

Oh god how are you coping?

crackfoxy · 30/11/2023 20:05

Just take it down! I would. I think pp are being harsh, I wouldn't like that either

ManateeFair · 30/11/2023 20:05

'in capitals'

Would a lower-case breakfast advertisement be more appropriate to your 'development on the edge of a nice town', then?

Yes, you're being a jumped-up nimby.

twirlywoop · 30/11/2023 20:06

Unless it is causing an obstruction to the view of the traffic or light pollution that's keeping you all awake I'm not really sure what the issue is here.

Why?

twirlywoop · 30/11/2023 20:08

If you rallied all the estate together and promised to go for a fry up every morning then maybe they could afford not to advertise
