To complain about the fast food sign

careermumofone · 30/11/2023 19:19

I live in a new build development on the edge of a nice town and there’s a car park/shop next to it where there’s a fast food van,

The owner of the fast food van has put up a very ugly sign advertising all day breakfasts (in capitals) at the entrance to our development.

It really makes our development look much less nice and I find it annoying every time I drive past it.

AIBU to ask them to move it or am I being a jumped up nimby?

Perhaps they should have had a sign made with perfect calligraphy instead of those nasty capitals. How very dare they advertise their business in such a poor way, I'll bet they don't serve eggs royale either 🙄

secretllama · 30/11/2023 20:09

Wow some of the snobbery on here, both about the sign and about new build estates 🙄

Ugh, I’d hate my lovely town to have an ugly new build development tacked on to it.

Those types of houses attract food vans and aesthetically poor signs.

This is a weird thread. And I'm very tired. So I hope everyone is joking.

So long as nobody is smashing up my house or setting fire to my kids live and let be.

New build developments rarely look good, and frequently have structural problems. You'll be glad of a fry up when you're on the phone complaining about your house.

😂

😂

Proper 🦇💩

LauderSyme · 30/11/2023 20:12

Why don't you design, produce and install a lovely stylish sign in lower-case letters? That would solve your problem.

Blooming people trying to earn a blooming living. Harrumph.

canisestinvia · 30/11/2023 19:39

Hang on everyone. Before you all jump in and criticise the OP, you did all notice the sign's in CAPITALS didn't you? Grin

Capitals? Quelle horreur! (Clutches pearls and faints)

Seriously @careermumofone you could always buy them a nice new sign for Christmas with no vulgar capitals.

Spybot · 30/11/2023 20:32

Maybe consult the council to see if they got permission for it? (I am in the States and in many towns signage has to be applied for and approved. Not sure what the rules are in the UK)

ProvisionsOnTheDock · 30/11/2023 20:36

YOU ARE BEING A JUMPED UP NIMBY.

Hullabalooza · 30/11/2023 20:40

Wow I can’t believe how many people are being horrible to you OP about this. I wouldn’t like this either. It is a bit nimby, granted, but this sounds like the sort of things you’d expect on an industrial estate not a residential area. I’d check with the council.

GirrlCrush · 30/11/2023 21:24

I'm sure your estate isn't THAT nice op....probably just a standard design same as the rest in the U.K.

It's fine

Toottooot · 30/11/2023 21:26

Wooptie fucking ping.

<imagines ‘aesthetically poor signs’ moving silently along the pavements as if drawn by a magnetic field and eventually clustering en masse at the entrance to the OP’s housing estate>

ghostyslovesheets · 30/11/2023 21:34

How ghastly

murasaki · 30/11/2023 23:18

New builds are often really tacky and ugly. Much more than helpful signs pointing you to a tasty breakfast.

Ocani · 30/11/2023 23:38

Unlikely the van owner owns the land he's put the sign on. Just bin it.

Excuse you, it’s not a “housing estate”, it’s a “development”, doncha know.

livingthegoodlife · 01/12/2023 12:37

check whether the area is subject to a special control of advertisements order

https://www.gov.uk/guidance/advertisements

is it on the new build estate land? is the food truck even permitted to be there?

speak to thr council

ChocolateCinderToffee · 01/12/2023 12:38

If someone put up a sign advertising a takeaway where I live, we’d put up bunting. It’s about 3 miles to the nearest.

Someone is trying to promote their business. Leave them be.

I confess to deliberately getting this "wrong" as often as I can :)

Greycottage · 01/12/2023 12:44

It doesn’t matter a jot how aesthetic the entrance to your estate is, nor how aesthetic your house is from the outside, nor how ugly or not your newbuild estate is, nor what other people think of your newbuild estate.

Let the fast food van chap or gal have his/her business. Worry less about what things look like. You will find life a lot more enjoyable. Same goes for the people replying with their one-up snobbery. If you’ve got time to worry how naice things look to other people then you’re a saddo.

saltinesandcoffeecups · 01/12/2023 12:55

I needed this thread this morning…I’m going to imagine the OP slinking through the night ninja 🥷 style to replace the offending sign with this one…

Complain to the council. To put up a sign of this sort you generally need council permission.

ConsistentlyElectrifiedElves · 01/12/2023 13:16

It is a bit nimby'ish, but I think signs put out on the street do need planning permission. I recall a local shop near me getting in to trouble for putting an a-frame sign on the street without permission.

As far as I know, planning permission is only required in the UK for illuminated signage if it's on private property with the owner's approval.
