Sorry posting here for traffic.
At 2 or 3am a few nights ago I saw something biggish (bigger than anything else I could see) that seemed to be jumping around, staying in the same area of the sky.
I thought it might be a satellite and wanted to know if my eyes were playing tricks, decided to film it.
I kept my phone as still as I could manage, it was stood on top of the open window.
What was super surprising when I zoomed-in were the shape and colours. I was expecting maybe a vaguely spiky thing (satellite) but it was like a sphere, with colours changing as if revolving. And yes it was jumping around.

Here are some zoomed-in stills I know they look like disco lights, I wished I could post the film, it was like a flaming (?)revolving thing, so thought it might be a star after all, but there were many that night and they don't show at all?

We live in a deeply rural area and beyond that, in the direction of that light, the sea is about 10 miles away.
Any ideas what this is?

YABU - Why are you looking at the sky?
YANBU - I know what this is, it's a ...

Drone?

Fairospop22 · 19/11/2023 14:15

Drone

LoveHema · 19/11/2023 14:17

Thank you. This is what DS suggested too.
What are they 'droning' in the middle of the night in the middle of nowhere?

What are they 'droning' in the middle of the night in the middle of nowhere?

I think that some drones can be fitted with night cameras so I suspect it might have been a police or farmers drone. Either way I would drop the local police a line to ask if it was them, if not then it makes them aware of it,

While typing this a thought struck me. There is always the possibility it could be someone searching the area for farming equipment/stock.

LoveHema · 19/11/2023 14:30

Oh good thought @AutumnFroglets ! This is becoming quite a problem around here. I might talk to the local squire.

OP, did you just say "the local squire". I assume you are posting from 2023? If not this thread just got a lot more interesting.

I'm also worried about @Hibiscrubbed as I count five pixilated photos and not four. Are all our minds being messed with from far, far away? 👽

I'm glad you've pixilated them to protect their identity

xyz111 · 19/11/2023 18:11

Could be a drone. Police and fire service use them too.

I think we should all walk slowly away from this thread and never speak of it again!

That's much clearer.

It's aliens.

Why is it such a problem that you would bother the local squire with it? They're just lights in the sky as far as you're concerned.

I think the previous poster meant photos made up of only 4 pixels! Not 4 photos.

To me it looks like the light drones that are used in our local festival of lights around the castle

Georgeandzippyzoo · 19/11/2023 19:02

We had an illuminated festival near us this week. We went and while there our ds spotted green lights darting about, really high up. We assumed drones and later saw some magnificent shots of everything lit up.
Police definitely use them to search large areas fields etc for heat signatures. I wouldn't have thought of someone using them to 'case the joint' - BTW also intrigued by the squire'

foxlover47 · 19/11/2023 19:07

I thought the "Squire " was purely in the old movie black beauty lol
I didn't know "a local Squire " still existed

Capella

earthsky.org/brightest-stars/capella-is-the-stellar-beacon-of-auriga-the-charioteer/

In the autumn, when Capella is lower near the northeastern horizon and appearing through a thick layer of Earth’s atmosphere, the star twinkles brightly, flashing colors of red, blue and green.
Capella is the brightest star in a five-sided pentagonal shape that makes up the constellation Auriga the Charioteer. The shape is difficult to reconcile with the idea of a man driving a chariot, but it’s a noticeable pattern and easy to find.

LoveHema · 19/11/2023 21:45

It is 2023 but here in deepest, darkest country it might as well be 1023. The place is crawling with local squires. Their people work the fields with expensive iron carriages! Such wonders surely excite the greed of many a villain that might or might not be casing the joint with a drone. (Check your deed, if you live in central London you have a local squire too by the way.)

However.
Thank you @HelpNeededBeforeIHaveABreakdown I am sure it was your star. It was due North East.
Much more poetic and beautiful. And it being Capella, The Goat, would explain the jumping around, no?

OP posts:
LoveHema · 19/11/2023 21:56

'The atmosphere splits or “refracts” the star's light, just as a prism splits sunlight. So that's the source of Capella's red and green flashes. They're not from the star itself. They're caused by the refraction of its light in Earth's atmosphere.15 Oct 2023

The light hits pockets of air at different temperatures and densities. These pockets are like lenses and bend the stars light rays so the star appears to move about, twinkle and flicker.'

@HelpNeededBeforeIHaveABreakdown Amazing!

It is amazing. We are in the countryside with dark skies too, I saw it for the first time this year and I am no spring chicken! I watched for quite a while hoping to see an alien spacecraft whizz off...
