Horror films that have come out this year which you’ve enjoyed?

I’m incredibly lucky to work in the film industry so I can watch unlimited films for free.

I enjoyed Evil Dead Rise may more than I thought I would have. The storyline was a good one and it had the perfect amount of gore. The opening scene of Evil Dead Rise alone was 10/10.

I’ve seen Talk To Me, Cocaine Bear, A Haunting in Venice and thought they were all easy watches.

I’m yet to watch The Nun 2, The Exorcist: Beliver. Incidious: The Red Door.

I didn’t even bother with Coweb. It looked absolutely shite!

I’ve just left the cinema having watch Thanksgiving and wow. It was SO good. A solid 8/10. It’s a straight slasher with a very decent amount of gore. It made you so uncomfortable, it had people squirming in their seats despite minimal jump scares. I’d recommend it to anyone who’s considering watching it. The trailer didn’t do it justice at all.

What horror films have you watched and enjoyed (or strongly disliked) this year?

M3gan. I quite liked it

canyoudealit · 18/11/2023 21:50

Cocaine Bear was surely a comedy, not a horror film? I suffered that earlier this year with my teen.

echt · 18/11/2023 21:51

Talk To Me was excellent, not least because it stayed Australian.

MinnieTruck · 18/11/2023 21:52

@Soubriquet oh gosh yes, M3GAN. I feel like that came out such a long time ago!! That film was so ridiculous that it was funny.

@canyoudealit Cocaine Bear is a comedy/horror film. You wouldn’t class it as your typical horror but it still falls under that category. I take it you weren’t a fan?😆

Well, I love Jesse Tyler Ferguson so I'm here for him on that basis.

Aren't horror films supposed to be scary?

You found that scary?

MinnieTruck · 18/11/2023 21:55

@echt Talk To Me was really good! Another film where the trailer didn’t do it any justice which is a good thing imo. There have been a lot of praises online from Australians who have also said the same thing as you

@canyoudealit nowhere did I say I found Cocaine Bear scary? Maybe you’re not familiar with Horror Comedies such as Shaun of the Dead, Scary Movie etc. None of those films are scary. It doesn’t stop them from falling under the Horror category…

I don’t remember starting a thread debating on what makes a film a Horror!

Soubriquet · 18/11/2023 22:01

Totally killer was good too though I didn’t find it scary

DeepEnd · 18/11/2023 22:04

I liked Talk To Me and M3gan too. I just watched the Argentinian film When Evil Lurks and highly recommend it - very creepy and gory. Quite a lot of ewwww moments.

You do you, if you found Cocaine Bear worth watching.

As I recall you did ask for people's views?

It's a shit film IMO but if it entertained you then I'm pleased for you.

thenightsky · 18/11/2023 22:19

I loved Talk to Me. Exorcist new version was a load of shite and I'm old enough to remember the original.

Sodie · 18/11/2023 22:24

Knock at the cabin was very good, also the black phone (but it was last year).

Allthecatseverywhereallatonce · 18/11/2023 22:24

I love horror but was really disappointed by Red door it really let the franchise down. M3gan was good too. Loved talk to me. Just waiting to see the new saw when its a bit cheaper to rent.

nutbrownhare15 · 18/11/2023 22:26

Enjoyed Totally Killer a lot

thenightsky · 18/11/2023 22:27

I love the Saw series.

ghostyslovesheets · 18/11/2023 22:28

I've had a bit of a horror day - but not new films really

Hell House Origins - really liked it but I like the series

Day of The Dean - oldie but goodie

Poughkeepsie Tapes - not an easy watch but decent

Looking forward to Jeruzelem 2 - the first film was a decent surprise - wasn't expecting to enjoy it as much

ghostyslovesheets · 18/11/2023 22:28

Day of the DEAD - blimey Day of The Dean sounds shit

Notfeelinghunkydory · 18/11/2023 22:31

I've just watched Renfield. It's a comedy horror but quite gory. Nicholas Cage was hilarious 😂

ghostyslovesheets · 18/11/2023 22:31

I didn't like Talk To Me - I found it scary but confusing

as for Cocaine Bear - come on! There is a huge sub genre of comic horror and it certainly falls into this - personally I loved it - silly as fuck and you know, bears and coke!

BeverleyMacker · 18/11/2023 22:32

M3gan and Terrifier 2. Couldn't finish the latest saw movie...too much for me 😞

MinnieTruck · 18/11/2023 22:33

The synopsis of Totally Killer didn’t excite me but I can see it’s on Amazon Prime so I may give it a watch tomorrow.

I’m yet to give Red Door and the latest Saw a chance as I feel like the franchise has just been overdoing it recently! If anyone has seen it and enjoyed it then let me know, I’ll give it a chance.

@DeepEnd glad to hear you enjoyed When Evil Lurks! I can’t watch Horror movies in the original language with English subtitles as I’m the type to look away from the screen when it gets too tense. When I do that, I usually rely on the audio to know what’s going on. I can’t do that if it’s in a different language and I hate when a film is dubbed in English! I’m yet to watch Martyrs for that very reason🫣

I didnt mind It Lives Inside

peskykiddds · 18/11/2023 22:45

Freaky
Huesera: The Bone Woman
The Mortuary Collection

Lot of recent horror films seem to have been about influencers: Follow Me (great!), Deadstream, Superhost etc...

Didn't hate the latest Scream installment either.

BloodandGlitter · 18/11/2023 22:45

Renfield is definitely horror comedy but it is a 10/10 for me! So good.

I’m honestly the easier person to scare despite loving Horror films but I didn’t get scared by Talk To Me! I’ve seen so many people say it’s one of the scariest films they’ve ever watched. I saw someone say that it was scarier than Hereditary!

I agree with you on the confusing part. The last scene was confusing and I only understood it when I went on Reddit to see what people had thought about it😂 it makes sense but not straightforward to the viewers imo.

Cocaine Bear was wicked. The park ranger absolutely killed me, she was hilarious
