5 year old with itchy roof of mouth?

My 5 year old is full of cold at the moment, it came on a couple of days ago. Since yesterday he’s been sticking his fingers into his mouth right to the back, at the top, saying his mouth is itchy. Then he does noises like he’s trying to get something out. I’ve looked inside with my phone torch and I can’t see anything unusual (not an expert). He’s not crying, no fever. Still being his usual self. It’s not constant either, it’s only a couple of times a day he seems to do it.

Just wondering if this sounds familiar to anyone or what it could be?

I always get this with a cold too, no allergies in sight.
It goes away but it's quite uncomfortable at times

Having an itchy roof of the mouth is often the first symptom of a cold for me. Hope he's feeling better soon.

Allergies can start at any time in small children as their system is still developing... your DS may have had slight irritation before but it might now have increased so I would ask GP to refer him for an allergy test as it will be useful for you to know if has developed allergic to certain foods or something in his environment...

I get this when I have a cold/sore throat. It’s probably nothing to do with an allergy 🙄

Carrotco · 11/11/2023 21:08

I had this before testing positive for covid

Strangely my 5 yo also has this at the minute. He has started with a runny nose and cough too a couple of days after the itchy roof of mouth

I have this. Alongside itchy ears. It's miserable. I have allergies to dust, pollon and animal hair/saliva.

I always get an itchy mouth with a cold - not an allergy at all.

I know the cold is coming as it's the first symptom. It's also the first symptom to go.

I always get this with an ordinary cold, along with aching teeth - not an allergy in sight 🤷‍♀️

Ditto. I know I have a cold coming when my teeth itch! And it spreads to the roof of my mouth.

Never thought of it as being an allergy to something.

@Goldenleaves23 DS2 has had it the last couple of days. We've all had covid, nicely accompanied by conjunctivitis. And itchy roof of mouth.

Yep me too. I also have a histamine intolerance so high histamine foods like pork products/tomatoes make my teeth, gums and roof of my mouth itch. Also give me blocked sinuses, headache etc. Nightmare.
