5 year old with itchy roof of mouth?

Goldenleaves23 · 11/11/2023 19:52

My 5 year old is full of cold at the moment, it came on a couple of days ago. Since yesterday he’s been sticking his fingers into his mouth right to the back, at the top, saying his mouth is itchy. Then he does noises like he’s trying to get something out. I’ve looked inside with my phone torch and I can’t see anything unusual (not an expert). He’s not crying, no fever. Still being his usual self. It’s not constant either, it’s only a couple of times a day he seems to do it.

Just wondering if this sounds familiar to anyone or what it could be?

Allergic reaction

I get it with hayfever. It's really uncomfortable.

Bless him, poor little thing.

Stumpedasatree · 11/11/2023 19:55

I also have it when I have an allergy, weirdly one of my ears itches at the same time as the roof of my mouth. Is it after eating something?

HobnobbingAboutHobnobs · 11/11/2023 19:56

I get it a lot. I have bad allergies and frequently suffer from post nasal drip which gives me that horrible itchy feeling at the back of my throat. It's so annoying, and drinking water does nothing to help.

Tallesttiptoes · 11/11/2023 19:56

Yes came on to say allergic reaction. DD started reacting to some fruits at this age, she gets an itchy mouth, hives and wheezing. It could be to do with the cold as well though? Maybe congestion?

Goldenleaves23 · 11/11/2023 20:02

I’m not sure it’s an allergy as it’s not connected to anything specific that he’s eating? It’s come on at the same time as this heavy cold, so i thought there must be some kind of correlation?

That's always caused by hayfever for me, though obviously doesn't happen at this time of year.

I'd probably give him some antihistamine.

TwoDozenWomen · 11/11/2023 20:08

It might not be something he's eating though, it could be something he's inhaling which is making his nose run, and that might not show up if he has a cold - have you got any anti histamines you can give him?

This. Allergies all day long

Goldenleaves23 · 11/11/2023 20:10

I haven’t got any antihistamine no, I’ll try and get some tomorrow morning. It’s literally just started with this cold a day or two ago, would an allergy have developed that quickly?

Could they have eaten something such as tortilla chips or pork scratchings that have scratched it and made it irritated? I sometimes irritate the top of my mouth of I have several hard-boiled citrus sweets in a row, idk why.

TwoDozenWomen · 11/11/2023 20:26

It could be caused by the pollen from cut flowers in the house, contact with a new animal, breathing in a new shampoo, or perfume.
Or it could just be an itch caused by the cold. But the point is, you can't tell until you try the anti histamines and see if they help. One cause is ongoing and treatable, and the other will wear off when the cold does.

Hangingintherejust · 11/11/2023 20:29

I always get this when I have a cold or allergies (brought on by hayfever, dust and cats at friends houses). It's incredibly annoying especially when trying to sleep. If he doesn't have a fever it may be worth trying a kids antihistamine in case it's an allergy because the symptoms can be the same as a cold.

SageLavenderThyme · 11/11/2023 20:30

I was going to say allergy. Or hand foot and mouth. But he'd probably have spots on his hands and feet!

Scottishskifun · 11/11/2023 20:31

I get this when I've got a cold it's bloody annoying nothing really reduces it but it does pass in a few days

Same! Really annoying. Try an antihistamine

Goldenleaves23 · 11/11/2023 20:32

I’ll try and pick up an antihistamine tomorrow, what’s the best one for kids of his age?

TM1979 · 11/11/2023 20:33

Definitely allergy. I’ve had this all my life. Itchy roof of mouth and inner ears. I take a daily anti histamine on prescription. Am treating post nasal drip now too.

CityCommuter · 11/11/2023 20:34

@Goldenleaves23 yes it's called Oral Allergy Syndrome. Certain foods trigger it and it's often fruit like oranges, pineapple, strawberries, tomatoes and green apples. Same with fruit juices. Hazelnuts can also cause it so watch out for Nutella... has your DS eaten anything on this list recently? The itchy mouth sometimes is accompanied by sneezing and watery eyes btw

OhNoForever · 11/11/2023 20:36

Liquid piraton

TwoDozenWomen · 11/11/2023 20:39

Tell the pharmacist the symptoms, and ask for the own brand children's one.

Owl55 · 11/11/2023 20:40

Dehydrated maybe ?

Ask the pharmacist if DC hasn't had antihistamines before. I usually get their own brand if there's one available. They may be able to suggest other relief for DC too. I hope DC is feeling better soon.

Goldenleaves23 · 11/11/2023 20:47

He does eat Nutella and apples/tomatoes but he’s always eaten them so nothing new?

OP posts:
AmoebicSquid · 11/11/2023 20:50

I always get this with an ordinary cold, along with aching teeth - not an allergy in sight 🤷‍♀️
