Why are some cups of tea completely perfect, and others just a bit meh?

Why is this? When both are made the same way - freshly boiled water so none of the depressing re-boiled water, brewed for the same amount of time, teabage swirled in the same manner before removing?

I don't get it. Why are some cups of tea perfect and everything you dream of in a cup of tea, and others are more akin to sad tasteless brown water?

Incidentally, the first cup of tea of the day is almost always a winner. Chances of inferior tea increase as the day passes. Wonder if I just get tead out but in denial about it?

I often wonder this….

Vintagecreamandcottagepie · 06/11/2023 21:09

The first cup of tea of the day is indeed the best, and they go gradually downhill with each cup after that.

Unless there's cake. But even tea and cake doesn't beat the first cuppa of the morning.

wesurecouldstandgladioli · 06/11/2023 21:10

I only have one cup a day and it’s always nice as long as I have good tea bags, freshly boiled water and fresh milk.

boudiccathecat · 06/11/2023 21:10

I don’t know, I had a wonderful cuppa at 6.30 pm today

Ihaventgottimeforthis · 06/11/2023 21:11

Timing.

Time of day, time brewing, time taken to get that first gulp influencing the perfect temp - it's a combination of timing.

justalittlesnoel · 06/11/2023 21:11

I think some bags must just be subpar leaves? That's my assumption! I think maybe once a week I have one that's a bit meh, so maybe it's that.

KinS24 · 06/11/2023 21:12

It’s a mystery. Not just perception/mood because we drink a LOT of tea and sometimes we will exclaim it’s the best cuppa ever and everyone will agree. 🤔

beeny · 06/11/2023 21:13

I have always wondered this

commandbrew · 06/11/2023 21:13

So I think it is possibly to do with you, I take the one teaspoon of sugar in my tea. Its always the same amount but sometimes it tastes too sweet other times its like there is no sugar in it. I think it is all to do with my internal sugar levels 😁

My tip for keeping my tea drinking experience "fresh" is to switch up the teas I use so breakfast tea in the AM, Darjeeling in the afternoon and Earl Grey or Lapsang Souchong in the evening.

Anyway, props to you OP for asking the most important question I've ever read on here, if you figure it out you should get a Nobel Prize!

PeanutAndBanana · 06/11/2023 21:13

The first one never disappoints. Others do, even when I make them (good quality bags, fresh water, etc). One of life's mysteries.

Odev · 06/11/2023 21:14

The cup needs to be thin china

EveryOtherNameTaken · 06/11/2023 21:14

I had this exact conversation the other day!

No clues. It just must be you just get those minute combos just right occasionally.

Can't beat it when you get it bang on though.

PurpleChrayne · 06/11/2023 21:14

One of life's great mysteries! I have given this a lot of thought, and conclude that it's the confluence of several factors:

  • time of day
  • which number cup of the day it is
  • the cup/mug used
  • the length of time you left the bag in
  • the amount/type of milk
  • the situation

All of these things have to align.

Crunchingleaf · 06/11/2023 21:15

I have often wondered this. Nothing beats the perfect cup of tea. You literally do the same thing over and over again but most cups of tea fall short.

PearlSlaghoople · 06/11/2023 21:16

I’ve had a real stinker of a cold since Thursday, and really enjoyed every single cup of tea I’ve had since then! It’s helped my dry throat, and the steam has cleared my nose.

I do get what you mean, op..… the first cup of the day is always really lovely, maybe we take more care with it, less distractions etc?🤷‍♀️

Im fussy about my tea, like it really hot, not weak, just the right amount of sugar… but with this cold, I’d have drunk it from a tin bucket, I think!

RudsyFarmer · 06/11/2023 21:16

For me it’s temperature. I don’t like a ‘hot’ cup of tea. When it’s steeped perfectly it will be the right temperature and taste.

wesurecouldstandgladioli · 06/11/2023 21:19

The real mystery is why travel mugs are mostly made of metal when metal makes tea and coffee taste funny.

ConstitutionHill · 06/11/2023 21:22

I think it depends on your thirst levels. That cup that has reached just the right temperature when you are parched, is heaven.

Jitterybugs · 06/11/2023 21:23

I don’t really enjoy tea at my daughter or son’s house as neither of them have a teapot. I like to make mine in a pot and pour it 2 mins later. I don’t like it strong but I like it hot and when I’m half way through my mug of tea I go back to the teapot for a top up 🫖

Aria20 · 06/11/2023 21:23

Does it depend what you have eaten just before? So the first cup of tea of the day is best as your taste buds haven't been tainted by anything savoury??

I am very fussy about my tea cup as well as brand of tea bag (got to be twinnings breakfast tea and one sugar!) I hate chunky mugs with a thick edge - the tea just tastes wrong even if it's brewed the same.

Sausagenbacon · 06/11/2023 21:27

Great topic.
I add the milk last and the amount is crucial.
What I hate is when you ask for a cup of tea in a cafe and they give you a cup of boiling water with milk added and then a tea bag put in it. Disgusting.

Haydenn · 06/11/2023 21:28

I make a bloody awful cup of tea. No idea why.

This. Not every teabag is identical. It's a game of chance!

VickyEadieofThigh · 06/11/2023 21:36

THANK YOU! I ask this on a regular basis!

First cup of the day is definitely the best.

miniegg3 · 06/11/2023 21:37

The cup/mug certainly influences the enjoyment of a cup of tea!

I never properly enjoy tea from a cafe
