Disgusting Halloween decorations

I will hold my hands up and say I’m really not a fan of Halloween so of course my view is a bit swayed by that. At the same time, I have no problem with people enjoying their fun and games, dressing up, pumpkins, and all that - it’s just not for me.

well… except today I’ve seen a house in my village with decorations that I think are just too much, distasteful, not appropriate for children (or even teens or vulnerable adults), and… well, I’ll describe it and you can let me know whether IABU. It includes:

a real car parked on the driveway with red ‘blood’ all over the bonnet and what looks like a body underneath. Also a body in a body bag at hanging from an upstairs window.

there’s also various cobwebs, skeletons, pumpkins etc that I have no problem with really.

I have no intention of “doing something about it” and I know it’s not up to me what other people do to their houses, so I don’t think I am actually being unreasonable… but I’m wondering whether others (especially any Halloween lovers out there) agree that this seems to be going too far?

I'm with you, halloween is spooky, spiritual and mischevious. It's not horror and violence and gore Halloween Confused

You may live in my village!

@Shannith haha, I did think someone might recognise it from the description. Not your house, is it?!

PutinSmellsPassItOn · 31/10/2023 17:08

We live next door to a church, the house directly opposite which faces the carpark has put giant, upside down crosses in all the windows which I thought was a bit disrespectful 😬

Darlingleavealightonforme · 31/10/2023 17:10

Having lost my DSiL abruptly after she was hit by a speeding 'getaway' car that mounted the pavement, if I saw this in a garden near me I honestly think I'd lose the plot.

I'm not a Halloween hater - but what's wrong with pumpkins and witches?

Nope but I e seen it (or similar) as I went past

Cowlover89 · 31/10/2023 17:14

Yabu ya being ott

Shannith · 31/10/2023 17:15

@ViaRia01 noticed it because it made the horse go wtf 😂

DiscoBeat · 31/10/2023 17:17

YANBU if they are in a place where they can be seen by passing children.

It's also stupid. Halloween is a Christian festival.

Ozzyskye · 31/10/2023 17:19

I love Halloween, but it's a firm "spooky not scary" as far as I'm concerned - adult parties we go all out gore, anything visible to the general.public should be a bit edited as far as I'm concerned. I don't like realistic bodies or scenes depicting

I also hate (young) children dressed as skeletons or corpses or ghosts and have refused to put Ds5 in similar before. Thankfully he is more than happy to be a pumpkin again this year 😁

DarkForces · 31/10/2023 17:19

Now I'm curious. What had she had for breakfast?

I find a lot of this type of thing horrendous. My close friend's dad took his own life and he was not 'found' for days because people thought there was a grim halloween decoration instead of seeing what was there.

Omg how awful for your friend. And the neighbours.

Tapasita · 31/10/2023 17:26

I don’t mind pumpkins & candles and the like for little ones but I agree with you OP, the trend nowadays is moving towards more American-style “gore” displays which I find very distasteful & totally over the top. Bunches of adolescents going around trick or treating takes on a much more menacing feel - it’s not for older kids, it’s a thing surely for younger ones. There’s something really bad about the direction things are moving in and I definitely don’t like it anymore

NaughtyBoyGeorgeMichaelJacksonBrown · 31/10/2023 17:28

Oh gosh, that is horrendous @littleripper Sympathies.

I do really enjoy being spooked and scared and love the creativity, even the insensitive stuff but I understand how much it obviously upsets people so think it should be left to haunted houses and events where you can't come across them by accident.

I haven't done anything this year except leave up my rotting summer sweet peas as a very clever and subtle comment on the fleetingness of beauty and life and the dark, insidious urban decay caused by the cost of living. Local kids love it.

Asparagus1 · 31/10/2023 17:29

YANBU, that’s awful. I hate seeing pics on Facebook of young kids dressed as Chucky etc with bloody plastic knives. My little boy loves Halloween but for us it’s pumpkins, witches, Frankenstein, ghosts…not dead bodies and murderers

Conkersinautumn · 31/10/2023 17:32

I do think the stuff that's very slasher movie is totally inappropriate and devoid of any 'fun' element. The only people who go trick or treating are very young so properly scary stuff rather than a bat/ raven silouhette and pumpkin are more of a 'piss off' than remotely cheerfully welcoming.

Greedybilly · 31/10/2023 17:33

God I hate the whole thing. Sad watching the adults getting into it more than the kids. Are there lives so empty/sad?

Can you explain how murder and car deaths are related to Halloween?

Christine
Hereditary
Death Proof
Evil Dead
Jeepers Creepers

Loads of car related horrors!

I didn’t ask about ‘horrors’. I asked about Halloween.
What’s the connection there? (Hint: there’s no link between films and Halloween).

Scary Movies…

Cars: Christine, Maximum Overdrive
Murder: well most of them, if I’m honest.

Oh you're one of those.

Halloween appeals to two demographics, little kids who want to go trick or treating and adults who like horrors.

Hint - the second demographic will be aware of the link to vehicles and horror movies.

Crunchymum · 31/10/2023 17:44

Pennywise showed up for school today - he is in Reception!!!

(it was an official dress up day and the costume was great but he is 4/5 years old!)

cardibach · 31/10/2023 17:46

@saltinesandcoffeecups no, nit film. Halloween.
@Verv one of what? People who actually know what Halloween is about? The commercial aspects of Halloween May have been hijacked by an older demographic. Doesn’t make it traditional or appropriate for the street in view of everyone else.
