Disgusting Halloween decorations

I will hold my hands up and say I’m really not a fan of Halloween so of course my view is a bit swayed by that. At the same time, I have no problem with people enjoying their fun and games, dressing up, pumpkins, and all that - it’s just not for me.

well… except today I’ve seen a house in my village with decorations that I think are just too much, distasteful, not appropriate for children (or even teens or vulnerable adults), and… well, I’ll describe it and you can let me know whether IABU. It includes:

a real car parked on the driveway with red ‘blood’ all over the bonnet and what looks like a body underneath. Also a body in a body bag at hanging from an upstairs window.

there’s also various cobwebs, skeletons, pumpkins etc that I have no problem with really.

I have no intention of “doing something about it” and I know it’s not up to me what other people do to their houses, so I don’t think I am actually being unreasonable… but I’m wondering whether others (especially any Halloween lovers out there) agree that this seems to be going too far?

I'm so sorry for your loss. Did they find the driver?

Yes, thankfully. He did some time for it.

LoobyDop · 31/10/2023 19:29

A house near us has two skeletons reclining on top of the bay window at the front. They’re so realistic I have wondered. That would be a good plot device for a detective story- hiding the body in plain sight at hallowe’en.

This one lives near me.

He makes me smile when I pass him.

I agree OP. It's fine to do what you want at home but I think realistic suicide/murder scenes visible on the front of the house are too much.

I think people are excessively performative now, I don't like that change. If you like horror that's fine but why force it on strangers?

It's horrible.

Maybe I'm sensitive at the moment (friend had his 12-year-old twins massacred at Kibbutz Be'eri) but I just can't bear the decorations this year.

I am so sorry, how unbearable.

Thats the point I think, if it makes you smile then it's all good.

As for @SurprisedWithAHorse 's What Car reading skeleton...I'm storing that idea for next year 😂

Yes... it's supposed to be good humoured, or just atmospheric.

ScremeEggs · 31/10/2023 19:41

I've voted YABU (even though I absolutely hate anything gory or horror and can't be arsed with Halloween) as you are being unreasonable if you like Halloween decorations but only if they meet your approval.
They're all gory and morbid if you think about it.
Even your plaggy skeletons and mummies.

Yes exactly.

If your decorations are intended to frighten people, you must be a cunt, frankly.

Pumpkins, black cats, witches and orange lights?

Can you explain how murder and car deaths are related to Halloween?

Christine.

Ididivfama · 31/10/2023 19:43

I agree about all the death stuff tbh. I like pumpkins and fantasy creatures like witches, vampires and monsters. I don’t like the nasty death stuff at all.

RainsGood · 31/10/2023 19:45

YANBU.

I like Halloween but mostly for it''s autumnal feel. I don't mind the pumpkin decoration or anything ghosty but can't stand all the gory stuff, I must admit I react quite viscerally to all that. I went to Gaels today where they were selling Halloween fingers, some sort of pastry, it looked totally disturbing, I thought I was going to be sick .

I like little kids trick or treating and happily decorate the front of the house with a few things but even some of the kids costumes are too much.

I am saying this sitting in a dark house, all sweets gone, pumpkin in, car not on the driveway as dh is out and people are still ringing the door bell. It's a bit perturbing🙀

menopausalmare · 31/10/2023 19:45

I agree op. We decorated with a couple of pumpkins and some tastefully placed candles and lanterns. No severed hands or decapitated heads at our house,💀

TowerRaven7 · 31/10/2023 19:46

I love Halloween and am sort of macabre myself but I won’t have scary Halloween decorations because I don’t want to scare the little kids!

RainsGood · 31/10/2023 19:46

And what @Ididivfama said 🍄🕸🎃

Iris1976 · 31/10/2023 19:46

Definitely ott, Halloween is supposed to be for children to have a bit of fun, that would be upsetting.

FortheBeautyoftheEarth · 31/10/2023 19:54

The spooky supernatural stuff is one thing, but the realistic gore stuff is too close to home for a lot of people - if people are into that in the privacy of their own home, that's one thing, but it is in poor taste when a lot of the scenes depicted are things that actually DO happen. My job involves talking to bereaved people and I hear a lot of people describe gory or traumatic stuff on a weekly basis, it's more common than most people realise.

ViaRia01 · 31/10/2023 19:54

@FuzzyPuffling yes I am! So you know the house I mean.
clearly others in the village have no objections (judging by all the praise on the Facebook post)

OP posts:
FuzzyPuffling · 31/10/2023 19:59

I do, ViaRia10.
And I disagree with everyone who thinks it is amusing in any way. Not at all to my taste.

bagheera92 · 31/10/2023 19:59

A woman put an image on of her two children dressed as chucky and took the to the graveyard for a mini photoshoot. Really really distasteful taking pictures like that in a graveyard

WiddlinDiddlin · 31/10/2023 20:07

The silly stuff doesn't bother me.

The stupid distracting stuff particularly on busy junctions or fast roads does, particularly where theres flashing lights and its going to confuse drivers (a few round here do this and its impossible to see if someones indicating, blocks the view of traffic coming out of the junction etc... a few accidents last year as a result of this!)...

The really accurate gory stuff... I am less and less amused by the older and more grumpy I get. This year, I have just done a 1 day seminar that involved forensic images of dead folk, graphic stuff with bodies maimed and ripped apart... it's not funny in the slightest, particularly the stuff involving babies/children.

Verv · 31/10/2023 18:20

No, one of those twee chirpy irritating types who says things like "hint" in order to be passive aggressive.
Glad you're one of the people who actually knows what Halloween is about though, what an achievement.

@Verv im not sure why this is upsetting you so much that you have to be rude. The OP is about a horrible display on a driveway that can be seen by children. It was defended as being ‘just Halloween’. My point is that it’s not a traditional element of Halloween and isn’t suitable for a general display. I don’t give a fuck if you or anyone else wants to watch horror films in the privacy of your own home ‘because it’s Halloween’.

ConspiciouslyDifferent · 31/10/2023 21:32

I agree. My son is terrified of Halloween and we have been stuck in for a fortnight because of the decorations. Can't wait for it to be over. Thank you for raising it.

Littleguggi · 31/10/2023 21:43

Not decoration as such but kids dressed up holding toy knives and guns is extremely distasteful!
