..to think that if you tell your small child that next door is the 'mental house' then you're probably not a good person

For clarity 'next door' is not a hospital facility specialising in disorders of the mind but a holiday cottage.

Overheard today when walking past a pair of holiday homes. Woman screaming at her child she couldn't go in the other houses garden because it was a 'mental house'. Not because it was private property.

Screaming woman clearly worships at the altar of the footballers wife. Did I judge? Hell yeah. WIBU?

Are you sure it wasn’t “rental house”?

Haha I'm betting it was

SamAndEIIa · 30/10/2023 18:07

Has there maybe been a previous altercation? Are the other guests maybe having a mental party or something?

Didn't see any party poppers or balloons but it is possible. It was around lunchtime though.

I was once on a flight where a horrible woman kept telling her toddler that "the gorilla is coming" every time she made any noise or asked for anything. The child was terrified. Every whimper she would say here he is coming to get you, the gorilla. I don't think she was joking, the little one looked absolutely petrified. I sometimes think about her and wonder if she grew up OK. Let's hope it was rental and not mental for the child's sake so the paeent isnt that awful, but personally, I would rather someone really tedious called me mental than thought I was interesting!

I love the 99.5%, I do like such precision in an OP 😀 imagine all those AIBU, yes you are, flounce flounce. AIBU, well yes about 74.6%, thanks guys, I can live with that. Much more civilised

We live in a converted lunatic asylum. It was converted over a couple of decades so for about 10 years there was a mixture of homes and wards in the various buildings on the estate. I don't think I ever heard of anyone calling the wards anything but 'the hospital'. I'm also quite sure that you heard those people calling it the 'mental house'. That's really sad and disrespectful, especially if it is a supported living facility.

WhateverMate · 30/10/2023 18:52

"You can't go in the garden because it's a rental house" would make so much more sense, given that they're holiday lets.

WHALESURPRISE · 30/10/2023 18:53

If it's NOT anything to do with mental health (I think the way your op is written is throwing people off) and it's just a bog standard rental cottage maybe it's just had a few crazy party guests? Seems more likely

WhateverMate · 30/10/2023 18:55

Also struggling to understand this ^^ ?

What does this mean?

BoohooWoohoo · 30/10/2023 19:04

If thought screaming woman worships at the Sistine Chapel...

OP has said quite clearly it is nothing of the sort and it’s a holiday cottage.

coveredindoghairs · 30/10/2023 19:14

The thought of living next to a holiday rental property that attracts wild, partying guests is chilling. Can't blame the woman for having an unpleasant name for it, really.

Hoardasurass · 30/10/2023 19:15

Sorry op but I think that you misheard and she said rental not mental

SausagePastaForTea · 30/10/2023 19:15

It is possible that once upon a time it was an informal holding place for the village loony. Cottages clearly converted from some sort of farm outbuildings.

I stick by my 99.5%. She said 'The Mental house'. Not a mental rental house.

What on earth is this post about 😂

nutsnutspistachionuts · 30/10/2023 19:25

"99.5%"

it's OK just to say "oh haha maybe, I hadn't thought of that".

£50 says she said "rental"

Thank you for the clarification. I'd read it as two holiday cottages and another residential place as well as the OP's residence.

She looked like a full blown mean girl to me. £75 says I'm right. Or at least 99.5% so.

Why do you care?

YourNameGoesHere · 30/10/2023 19:38

This whole post makes absolutely zero sense.

Why would she call it the mental house?

You sound completely bonkers to be honest.

Perhaps I should rent The mental house.
