..to think that anyone under 40 doesn't care about grammars and, as a result, society is doomed.

Decent spelling and grammar are the cornerstones of civilised society and yet so many people defend their wright [sic] to do it wrong.

AIBU to think that we should be worried. Really worried. About the future of our society.

AIBU also to think that it is largely an affliction of the under 40's and that they are lazy about language which translates to other areas of life.

NB IABU to not make it a poll but until @mumsnethq offers this as an option on the app it just ain't possible ...

Yabu.

Although, following your argument, I will assume you are under 40 given the state of your own post.

OldBilge · 27/10/2023 20:15

@Spattergroit, I’d take this plea a lot more seriously if the grammar weren’t quite poor.

thinkfast · 27/10/2023 20:16

Is this a joke OP? A few grammatical errors in your post to kick of society's downfall perhaps?

Fionaville · 27/10/2023 20:16

Could it not be a failure of the education system, rather than a conscious decision?

MrsTerryPratchett · 27/10/2023 20:17

Is this supposed to be meta or something?

They're going to be scavenging food in an overheated world, living in caves because property is still prohibitively expensive, and one day, whilst strolling on the beach, they will stagger into Nelson's stone tricorn hat before dropping to their knees to scream at a godless sky....

Knowing how to use an apostrophe will not save them, sadly.

Binkie98 · 27/10/2023 20:20

I wouldn't say that spelling and grammar are the hallmarks of a civilized society. That definition should be made on the basis of how a society treats its vulnerable members.

In this, we are failing more than we are succeeding. Social care is underfunded and sometimes staffed by inappropriate people.

Special educational needs are woefully inadequate.

Governments, police and medical workers are sometimes shown to be immoral and corrupt (not all, obviously).

Against all these failings, spelling correctly comes far down any list.

Maybe, just maybe their apostrophe knowhow will give them the courage to stand tall and shout:
'If only I hadn't spelt it que'
Before they crawled away to die.

WhateverHappenedToMe · 27/10/2023 20:23

Yesterday I was asked to make comments (meaning on the content) of a piece written by a colleague. This colleague has a Masters degree.

In the end I couldn't let the punctuation and grammatical errors pass without comment.

Grammar schools, or grammar?

Language, as a dynamic and livin' entity, undergo continual adaptation and evolution through the passage of time. The adherence to establish norms in spelling and grammar remain imperative for the facilitation of lucid communication.
