..to think that anyone under 40 doesn't care about grammars and, as a result, society is doomed.

Decent spelling and grammar are the cornerstones of civilised society and yet so many people defend their wright [sic] to do it wrong.

AIBU to think that we should be worried. Really worried. About the future of our society.

AIBU also to think that it is largely an affliction of the under 40's and that they are lazy about language which translates to other areas of life.

NB IABU to not make it a poll but until @mumsnethq offers this as an option on the app it just ain't possible ...

Languages evolve. That's why we don't speak ye olde English anymore

Stillwaitingfor · 27/10/2023 21:15

The number of posters who do not understand, or even try to understand, the difference between 'bear' and 'bare' 😫

If I read "I can't bare it" one more time...

I guess that my point is if we let the so called 'little' things go then where does that leave the big things?

One day we hold open the doors, the next we let them slam in the face of the elderly and infirm. Where does it stop? To my mind caring about language isn't an affectation, it is a vindication of our humanity. To attack those who support good grammars [sic] is very common but reveals a side of humanity that is unkind and often ignorant.

And for the hard of humour the title is intended to be ironic.

Well you didn’t make that point so poor communication on your part.

Intended? Nope. No one believes that. Tripped up by your own pomposity.

You only have to look at the over used word"literally" to see that nobody gives a shit about grammar. It's never used in its correct context. Laziness.

nadine90 · 27/10/2023 21:27

I’m in my 30s and regularly find myself cringing at spelling and grammatical errors made by senior (in age and role) colleagues.

Illbebythesea · 27/10/2023 21:28

OP, stop trying to write grammatically incorrect purposefully. Quite frankly, it’s cringey & not at all
humorous which is what I assume you’re trying to achieve here.

Prescottdanni123 · 27/10/2023 21:29

If the world ends, I highly doubt it will be because society couldn't put commas in the right place.

Toddlerteaplease · 27/10/2023 21:30

I thought this was a post about grammar schools.

LindorDoubleChoc · 27/10/2023 21:39

PMSL at this. I absolutely love it when a pompous arse makes a huge spag error in their judgey post. I might have to save this one forever.

Guttedme · 27/10/2023 21:40

Know people having a crack at getting into ‘the bill’ at detective far from basic level and they’ve been acceptable.

Sorry they are not being brought up on grammar. Or when lower case should be upper case.

perhaps you want to have a word or not.

I'm not even participating in this thread. You've tagged me just so you can say all this. I didn't react at first except to "like" your first post so you've said something even more extreme and personal.

You don't have to read my posts if you don't like them. I have reported yours.

CheckEngineLightOn · 27/10/2023 21:48

I love the people replying thinking this is serious when OP’s replies make it clear it’s fake (or OP is genuine and genuinely having a stroke)

OP, eye defiantly totes gangrene

@Spattergroit You purposely misspelt right to prove your point.

arguably language and words evolve and morph depending on the culture and time of when it was written.

How cultural milestones are recorded, documented and archived is important.

all that changes due to the above is how language and grammar fluctuates. The fact it is being recorded also allows civilisation to recognise these fluctuations in communications.

grammar, spelling and language is in constant fluctuation. What’s considered good grammar 100 years ago isn’t necessarily considered good grammar today. Add in time, culture, language into this and this equates to more fluctuations of what’s considered good or bad language.

don’t be an elitism snob op.

Pretty sure you're confusing me with someone else. I have no idea what you're talking about. I'm hardly ever here except for this week because I've been stuck at home.

Reported again. Like I said, I am not even participating on this thread. You tagged me. Go and bully someone else.

So your point is that things change and we should just let this go?

Mine is simple. Let the small things slip and then we're off to hell in a handcart. As per my OP I blame the under 40's. Grammar (and spelling) abusing special snowflakes to a man.
