To wear an engagement ring on my right hand?

OhGingleBells · 21/10/2023 10:22

I’m very single - definitely not engaged or likely to be any time soon!

What’s the deal with wearing a deceased family member’s ring that I’ve inherited?

It’s the same colour as my preferred earrings etc and although there is some sentimental value to it, I mostly just think it’s quite pretty.

It only fits my ring fingers - obviously won’t be wearing it on my left hand but is it okay to wear on my right? What do you assume if you see someone wearing just one ring and it’s on the right ring finger? Does it need to be worn in conjunction with rings on other fingers? Don’t have any others that I like particularly.

Apparently in some countries the engagement ring goes on the right ring finger and I definitely don’t want anyone to assume I’m engaged!

I wouldn't think anything about it. It's just a pretty ring and doesn't signify anything to anyone. You're overthinking it - just enjoy it.

glitterfinder · 21/10/2023 10:27

I did the same in the same circumstances. I'd think nothing of it. Sometimes people commented on the ring but never asked about engagement or anything. I think it's Polish people who wear wedding rings on the right, not sure who else.

Tourmalines · 21/10/2023 10:32

I’m in the jewellery trade, there is no deal or problem with wearing a deceased family members ring on any finger that you like . No one would even blink an eyelid .

notlucreziaborgia · 21/10/2023 10:37

Orthodox Christians/the culturally Orthodox wear weddings rings on their right hand. Unless you’re in an Orthodox country it’s unlikely that anyone will assume you’re wearing it to signify being married.

Edited to add that it’s tradition in Catholic Poland too. Wearing it on the right hand apparently comes from the Roman/Byzantine Empire, where the left was associated with evil.

Missedmytoe · 21/10/2023 10:38

I wouldn't think anything of it. I'm not superstitious and used to wear rings on both ring fingers (and most other fingers) when I was single.

LeonBlack · 21/10/2023 10:44

Of course it’s ok. It’s just a ring.

Bigminnie1 · 21/10/2023 10:46

There's no problem with this at all.7 am married but I wear my mum's and grandma's engagement rings on my right hand.

Basilton · 21/10/2023 10:48

I sometimes wear my mothers engagement ring on my right ring finger. Never occurred to me that there is anything odd about that. I wouldn’t have worn it on my left hand.

I've voted YABU but only because I think you're being unreasonable to even question this!

Edited

It's more countries than this. In Germany, a majority wear wedding rings on the right hand, although engagement rings are worn on the left. Read once that traditionally you'd often just have one ring and switch it from left to right upon marriage.

sneckquine · 21/10/2023 11:00

Absolutely fine to wear it on whichever hand/finger you like
Maybe not practical in your case but I had my mums engagement ring made into a pendant and now wear it as a necklace. Her eternity ring was made into little earrings. It's nice to know I'm still able to use it as neither fitted me as rings. Just enjoy it

Sisterpita · 21/10/2023 11:04

I have a number of lovely engagement rings I have inherited. To me each one is priceless because of the sentimental value.

I wear them on my right hand with a plain gold band (several made out of a bracelet and shared out). It could look like I am widowed or divorced but no one has commented other than admiring the ring(s).

Enjoy wearing your ring.

ComtesseDeSpair · 21/10/2023 11:06

Unless you live in a traditional community I doubt anyone will even register anything beyond that you’re wearing a nice ring on one hand. I have several friends and colleagues who wear rings on their actual “ring” finger despite not being engaged or married (and in some cases not in a relationship at all) because it’s just jewellery and that’s the finger it fits best without interfering with their dominant (right) hand.

SaracensMavericks · 21/10/2023 11:07

I've inherited two engagement rings, one from each of my grandmothers. I wear them on my any hand or finger except my left ring finger.

Overthebow · 21/10/2023 11:09

I would assume you’re engaged, as lots of people do wear their engagement and wedding rings on their right hand, but I don’t see why that would be a problem. If you like the ring then wear it.

Jellycats4life · 21/10/2023 11:13

I used to wear my grandmother’s engagement ring on the fourth finger of my right hand, because that’s the finger it fit.

You’re overthinking, honestly. You don’t have to worry what people think, you don’t have to combine it with other rings to distract from its engagement ring-ness! It’s just a ring.

DappledThings · 21/10/2023 11:16

I wouldn't think anything of it other than it being a ring you liked

True, didn’t even think of Germany! There’s also some more central/western European, Balkan, Scandinavian and Baltic countries where it’s tradition.

Found this which is interesting

The world will not cave in if you do it

SlightlygrumpyBettyswaitress · 21/10/2023 11:34

I wear my grandmother's amethyst and opal knuckleduster on my right hand. I can't imagine anyone even thinks about it.

aintnospringchicken · 21/10/2023 11:35

I wouldn't assume anything.I wear my mum's engagement, wedding and eternity ring on the ring finger of my right hand and my own rings on my left.

PinkRoses1245 · 21/10/2023 11:36

I don’t think I’d ever notice, just wear it!

WaltzingWaters · 21/10/2023 11:46

My Nan has given me her engagement ring. It only fits on my ring fingers. I wear it (and only that) on my right ring finger. Never thought anything of it or had anyone comment on it in the UK.

Catza · 21/10/2023 11:55

I wear rings on whichever finger they fit. Nobody has ever mentioned anything to me and if they asked me if I was engaged, I’d just say no. Really don’t understand why you would even consider this question. It’s such a trivial thing to be worried about

KnowledgeableMomma · 21/10/2023 18:18

I wear rings on whatever finger I choose. I'm also single and have never been married. It's totally not a big deal. Go for it!
