Why is a married man copying me?

ItsDrizzlingNow · 20/10/2023 17:58

I have this new colleague, he is married. He’s been doing this thing where he copies me, like copying my movements and gestures.

I don’t know what to make of it. Some people think he’s just being friendly but I have noticed he does this to no one else but me and I don’t know why.

Like, if I’m standing and I lean on the wall, he’ll copy me too and do the same. If I’m sitting and I cross my arms, he’ll copy me and do it do. While saying nothing and not making any conversation with me. He’s paying attention a lot to me and my gestures and imitates what I do regularly.

Like if I say hello, he’ll say hello too. If I ignore him, he’ll ignore me too. He never acts like this with any other person at work apart from me. I don’t understand?

If it makes you particularly uncomfortable ignore him. As you say, he'll ignore you back

orangegato · 20/10/2023 18:29

Sinister. I’d lose my mind. I’d start making silly movements. Get witnesses so people can see it when you call it out.

Bunnyhair · 20/10/2023 18:30

😂 @Menopants

Do a headstand and see what happens

🤣🤣🤣

NeverDropYourMooncup · 20/10/2023 18:32

Pick up artist bollocks in the wild.

  • 'following - doing the movements after she did them. Note that although your mind screams "This is stupid! I'm going to get caught! She MUST see me doing the same movements! This is ridiculous!", don't' listen to it, fight it, it is the voice of the Dark Side!:) Why? Because they NEVER NOTICE it! Instead, they feel more comfortable and relaxed in connection with you, and eventually (that's why you even bothered, right?:) - more drawn to you.

Sounds bloody odd to me and almost a form of bullying like he is taking the piss.

RaininSummer · 20/10/2023 18:33

Actually I love the idea of doing random odd movements for him to copy.

Mochudubh · 20/10/2023 18:33

Pick your nose. It should have the added bonus of putting him off if he does fancy you.

MaudGone · 20/10/2023 18:34

He might not have the confidence or social skills to initiate a conversation. He's probably read somewhere that mirroring builds rapport, as someone said above. If it's only you he's doing it to, that probably means he fancies you, I'm afraid.

Sunseaandsand1 · 20/10/2023 18:34

Grab your tits, then scratch your armpits & touch your toes, in quick succession…..can you film if he copies you & post it here?!

Ringadinga · 20/10/2023 18:36

ItsDrizzlingNow · 20/10/2023 18:24

If he was attracted to me, he would be initiating conversation… but he doesn’t Brew

Oh, so you want us to say he fancies you because you fancy him and then there can be all this 'awareness' between two people, and no one else you work with will notice..... True love, his wife is terrible and no one understands him like you, soul mates. Is this the route you're planning? 'cause don't, it's old hat and a load of rubbish. Work mates will know, he won't leave his wife and it's tiresome.

If it's just annoying you, ignore it. It's his problem, don't make it yours

DerangedViper · 20/10/2023 18:36

He'll have done a body language course recently and is deliberately mirroring you as he'll have been taught that's how to build rapport.

He probably does it to everyone, and it will become less pronounced as time passes

Inkpotlover · 20/10/2023 18:36

I'd have to start testing it. Do rabbit ears behind your boss to see if he copies, or put your middle finger up. If he does copy, that's the moment to ask what the hell he's up to.

beetle02 · 20/10/2023 18:38

LylaLee · 20/10/2023 18:12

He read a book on neuro linguistic programming which told him to do this to build rapport.

Exactly this

Lotta0 · 20/10/2023 18:38

Sounds like you want us all to say "omg he fancies you".

I think you fancy him and hope that he feels the same for a lovely ego boost...

Namechange1345677 · 20/10/2023 18:04

That's just mirroring....I do it subconsciously after years in sales

Same!!! Is he in a sales role OP?

Toottooot · 20/10/2023 18:46

Log it with 101 hun.

I don’t know what this means.

Ha ha. Yep...log it with 101.

IncompleteSenten · 20/10/2023 18:49

Start doing really weird things and see if he copies .

Begin by standing on one leg and get increasingly bizarre from there.

Agree with this. If you think he fancies you just say so. Likewise if you have a crush on him and don't know how to feel, say that.
But him saying hello when you say hello? Means nothing.

Yes! Maybe try a hokey cokey while waiting for the photocopier.

GarlicBroccolini · 20/10/2023 18:52

Do you fancy him OP?

JennyMatrix · 20/10/2023 18:52

He's mocking you. It's a form of bullying that can easily be denied as a figment of your imagination.

largeprintagathachristie · 20/10/2023 18:52

It’s mirroring.
He may be doing it subconsciously.
More likely he’s been on a how to win friends and influence people type training course, learned about it and is employing it clunkily.
