I dislike people anyway. Even more so now.

I decided to have a bit of breakfast and a drink in a supermarket cafe this morning. They don't have the lockable trolley sheds, rather people leave their trolleys lined up in a row. I parked mine up with two others and left my empty shopping bags on the handles. It was obvious they were empty. I went back to the trolley after my breakfast to find it had gone! Who would steal two empty shopping bags?!

They probably did not notice the bags? I would not think someone would purposely take it for the bags. More likely they thought you were finished with the trolley.

SpeedbirdSquawker · 08/10/2023 18:21

The bags are big shopping bags. They would've known the trolley was taken by someone as it was parked up in the cafe with two sizeable shopping bags on the handle.

I'm confused as to why you left the bags on the trolley? Surely with empty bags you just fold them up and carry them with you? You didn't need to leave them on the trolley, you weren't even really using the trolley.

Were you trying to reserve the trolley to use later? (Like leaving a towel on a sun lounger?) If so, someone who needed a trolley and couldn't find one available may well have considered you to be the unreasonable one.

Missedmytoe · 08/10/2023 18:32

Did you ask at thr customer service desk? It's possible an employee thought they'd been left in error and picked them up.

GodDammitCecil · 08/10/2023 18:34

The trolley was empty as well?

Or was all your stuff still in the trolley?

Bernadinetta · 08/10/2023 18:35

Why did you take a trolley to the cafe before you’d started your shopping? Why not just have your breakfast then go and collect and trolley when you’d finished in the cafe? I agree that someone wasn’t purposely trying to steal your bags, more just trying to use an empty trolley.

SpeedbirdSquawker · 08/10/2023 18:37

There are loads of trolleys for people to choose from. The cafe is at the very back of the supermarket which is why I get a trolley first so I can leave the cafe and start doing my shopping instead of having to walk all the way outside again to get one after the cafe visit.

OP posts:
SpeedbirdSquawker · 08/10/2023 18:39

The cafe was also fairly empty. If anyone would have wanted to use the trolley they would have only have to ask the few people using the cafe.

Only on mumsnet do people not think someone is a cheeky fucker for stealing my shopping bags.

OP posts:
GodDammitCecil · 08/10/2023 18:41

So why have you come on to get opinions and actually ask if you were being unreasonable, if you don’t think you were?

Leaving your empty bags on the trolley was odd.

More than likely it was a genuine mistake, and someone thought the bags had been left behind.

Either tbat, or someone swiped them. Next time, keep your bags with you.

butterpuffed · 08/10/2023 18:45

Maybe someone took them to customer services , thinking the trolley had been abandoned .

Ella31 · 09/10/2023 00:08

I actually think it's cheeky to take a trolley and expect it to still be there while you enjoy breakfast.

saltinesandcoffeecups · 09/10/2023 00:41

So you left an empty trolly with two empty shopping bags and are mad someone took them? Why did you not get breakfast with your shopping bags and then get a trolley when you were ready to shop?

By all means be mad at the world if that’s what you want. Or you could not do things that don’t make sense and avoid the problems. I’m a reasonable person and if I saw an empty unattended cart with empty bags I’d think someone had finished with it and didn’t need the shopping bags and left them.

Dotcheck · 09/10/2023 00:45

Ignore everyone OP.
Yes, you could have taken your bags in with you, but that does not mean you deserve to have your bags stolen.

GodDammitCecil · 09/10/2023 00:51

Nobody’s saying she deserved to have her bags stolen.

It’s far more likely that someone assumed the bags had been left behind. Rather than some Machiavellian machinations going on to make off with her two bags.

ImustLearn2Cook · 09/10/2023 01:18

@SpeedbirdSquawker I think I get it. I am not from the Uk so correct me if I am wrong. The cafe is in the supermarket and at the back. So, you collected a trolley on your way into the supermarket which is quite reasonable.

Then before shopping for your groceries you had breakfast in the cafe in the supermarket and parked your trolley. To show that the trolley is in use, you have hung your shopping bags on it.

YANBU. I would be annoyed too. I haven’t seen a cafe in a supermarket before, was there not enough room to park your trolley next to your table?

SunshineLollipopsRainbow · 09/10/2023 01:29

I totally get it. My supermarket is the same! That's bloody annoying that someone took your trolley and bags!

Millybob · 09/10/2023 02:27

You've got to be early to get to the trolleys before the Germans!

decionsdecisions62 · 09/10/2023 04:30

When we go to Waitrose cafe there's a park for trolleys. I did exactly the same as you and pooped my plastic bags in it. I did wonder if they would get pinched to be honest so I won't do it again.

Good idea. No one will steal your bags if you poop on them

Someoneonlyyouknow · 09/10/2023 05:12

Someone wasn't as organised as you, came out of the cafe and couldn't be bothered going all the way back to the front of the supermarket to get a trolley. They probably forget to bring shopping bags too. Lazy CF

Thequeenofwishfulthinking · 09/10/2023 05:45

QOD thank you for making me laugh so early on a Monday morning. I can’t believe the poster thought they would still get taken despite pooping on them. The lengths people will go to when we now have to pay for carrier bags!

MorvernBlack · 09/10/2023 05:58

Bizarre answers on here. I know the kind of supermarket set up that you mean and it would have been obvious to someone that they are taking someone else's trolley and bags. To many inconsiderate arseholes about these days.

StrictlyAFemaleFemale · 09/10/2023 06:02

Oh no! Were they bags for life or really good ones that fit perfectly in your car/panniers?

Guavafish1 · 09/10/2023 06:06

I would have taken the trolley with me whilst eating breakfast

WandaWonder · 09/10/2023 06:09

I cant remember the exact details but many years ago I heard something like you could leave a Rolex watch in the middle of the street and people would ignore it but yeah a empty shopping bag (some random small thing) would be taken - it is a 'thing'
