To wonder what is wrong with people?

I dislike people anyway. Even more so now.

I decided to have a bit of breakfast and a drink in a supermarket cafe this morning. They don't have the lockable trolley sheds, rather people leave their trolleys lined up in a row. I parked mine up with two others and left my empty shopping bags on the handles. It was obvious they were empty. I went back to the trolley after my breakfast to find it had gone! Who would steal two empty shopping bags?!

I'd have done the same as you OP - and be bloody irritated too

When we go to Waitrose cafe there's a park for trolleys. I did exactly the same as you and pooped my plastic bags in it. I did wonder if they would get pinched to be honest so I won't do it again.

That's one way to keep your plastic bags safe but do you ever worry about the not making their way through?

MidnightOnceMore · 09/10/2023 06:13

It's annoying but you don't actually know they were deliberately stolen.

I dislike people anyway This is not a great approach - you'll be more like to notice the bad, when truth there is both good and bad.

Typical mumsnet where the first few answers are jumping in to tell the OP, yes you are unreasonable.
Why did you get the trolley first?
Why did you leave them on the handle?
Ffs, nothing like victim blaming (and I’m quite aware it’s just theft of a bag for life, so don’t pile on at me for that comment)
I swear some posters just want to be the first to jump in and pile on.

OP, you are most certainly not unreasonable, this would really annoy me too.

MintJulia · 09/10/2023 06:54

OP, people will steal anything that isn't nailed down.

Things of no value. Things providing them a service. In this case it saved someone a pound. As you say, a fair proportion of the general public are selfish to the core.

Sad

a guy in my supermarket left his empty trolley outside while he nipped in the toilet . His bags were stolen.

FatherJackHackettsUnderpantsHamper · 09/10/2023 07:40

More than likely it was a genuine mistake, and someone thought the bags had been left behind.

I do often see trollies returned/left with empty bags still attached to them. I think that, even though we now have to pay for bags, a lot of people still have the mindset that they're free/worthless things and thus a free-for-all - and genuinely don't see it as stealing.

If that's your evidence for hating people, you have very low tolerance levels

Yes.

OP, it’s perfectly possible that the person who puts stray trolleys back in trolley bays assumed it was abandoned. It is actually quite an odd thing to do to leave bags on an unattended trolley and assume people will view it as a sign it’s ‘reserved’ by someone not in evidence, rather than abandoned.
