Is a Viennese Whirl a biscuit or a cake?

I has a seaside Viannese whirl earlier. It was huge. Imagine circumnavigating a regular sized family hedgehog in ball formation. It was that diameter. Thick too, like a dog's paw or a book that makes you look intelligent. Probably the equivalent of 2 six packs of Mr Kipling's whirls.
But was it a cake or biscuit? It tastes like shortbread which is an obvious biscuit and it knows it, but then again it yields so easily to the squash of the tongue. Or is it a totally different category of foodtypes like a fungus is to plants and cats?

I say biscuit! - YANBU

Not biscuit - YABU

I read somewhere recently that a cake goes hard when stale and a biscuit softens as it goes stale. On that basis, I assume a Viennese whirl would soften and would therefore be a biscuit?

(My source is likely either here or Facebook though, so I'm not sure how accurate it is!).

A biscuit. But a very superior one.

eandz13 · 07/10/2023 18:32

Biscuit, all day.

evtheria · 07/10/2023 18:32

Biscuit

MatthewsMumFromTikTok · 07/10/2023 18:33

That sounds amazing! Tell us more about it!

I'd also say biscuit

Mysterian · 07/10/2023 18:35

Some people are voting for Team Cake. They seem to embarrassed to admit it openly though.

Where are you finding this hedgehog/dog paw hybrid baked goood ?
(Obvs asking for a friend) !

Good Think layer of cream and regulation smear of jam too. In Mudeford if you want to go and get one.

Biscuit. It's made of biscuit stuff, not cake stuff.

That's correct - it was used in the great Jaffa cake VAT court case.

All cake is exempt from the tax, but only NON chocolate biscuits. So a jaffa cake was left out over night and it became hard - thus a cake

Isn’t this the definition which meant Jaffa Cakes are VAT free (or were, wouldn’t be surprised if the Tories had closed that little loophole)

funinthesun19 · 07/10/2023 18:40

On the Mr Kipling box in my cupboard it says it’s shortbread. So since shortbread is a biscuit, it’s a biscuit.

I want one of those seaside ones!

theduchessofspork · 07/10/2023 18:41

A biscuit

always tastes like stale soft shortbread to me, but anyway.

OnlyFannys · 07/10/2023 18:41

I can't get past your frame of reference for the size being regular sized family hedgehog in ball formation 😂😂😂
I haven't seen a hedgehog in real life for years so this doesn't help in the slightest but I love it nonetheless

mindthegap22 · 07/10/2023 18:42

Biscuit

The cakeateers are being quiet aren't they! Stealth voters 🤣

thenightsky · 07/10/2023 18:43

Biscuit. My mum used to make lovely homemade ones from her BeRo cookbook.

Ponoka7 · 07/10/2023 18:44

I did vote cake at first because they are in the cake isle and you treat them as a cake. They are a biscuit though. Mr Kipling describes his as biscuits.

Tessisme · 07/10/2023 18:44

Oh, definitely a biscuit. I had one in a coffee shop on Thursday and I didn't know whether to eat it or climb it. Definitely a biscuit though. Yum!

Y7jahbb33 · 07/10/2023 18:46

Definetly a biscuit

I absolutely love these.... but I'm ashamed to say i dont know how to say it so when in a bakery I just point and say 2 of them please 😂😂

CorylusAgain · 07/10/2023 18:46

Biscuit

MatthewsMumFromTikTok · 07/10/2023 18:48

Cake has eggs in it.... biscuits don't ( do they?)

RicherThanYews · 07/10/2023 18:50

Many biscuits and cookies contain egg yolks so that's a difficult one.

InMySpareTime · 07/10/2023 18:51

Biscuit.
The reason it is softer than shortbread is that Viennese biscuits have self raising flour not plain flour.

gaggiagirl · 07/10/2023 18:52

Have you got any photos?
I've never seen a giant one before. Which seaside should I attend to acquire one?
Sounds beautiful.
And it's a biscuit 🍪

Anniegetyourgun · 07/10/2023 18:53

Argh, you know what you've done now? There I was, picking at a bunch of grapes like a fairly virtuous person, and suddenly you talk about giant sized Viennese whirls. I would have voted YABU for that, except you've changed it to mean cake-voter. It's a biscuit obviously. Well, 2 biscuits in a sandwich. Mmmmmm.....
