Leavers Hoodies should be allowed for the whole of the last year?

Some Year 6's round our way are already wearing their leavers hoodies... which is great considering parents have to pay for them and once they finish primary they may wear them over the summer hols but probably never again once they go up to secondary.

AIBU to think this should be standard in all primary's where leavers hoodies are a thing?

And if IABU then why?

This is a much better idea. My kids were over them with days of leaving school, primary and secondary, never to be used again.

EVHead · 05/10/2023 22:24

Seems to be the norm in Scotland.

truptantripping · 05/10/2023 22:24

I was thinking the same. I was helping my y6 with their speech for being elected for student council, I was suggesting this idea- not sure what happened to it but totally agree.
Let's get some wear out of them!

user1471530109 · 05/10/2023 22:27

I suggested this when I was on the pta. But the Head shut me down. I totally agree. Such a shame! One of the other local primaries gives them out at Easter or around Sats week which is a good compromise.

FionnulaTheCooler · 05/10/2023 22:28

YANBU. When my DD left primary they ordered the hoodies shortly after the start of their last year and they came just after the October holidays. They were allowed to wear them as uniform for the rest of the year so she got plenty of use out of it. I would've been unimpressed to have paid £30 for it for a couple of weeks wear.

namechanger563 · 05/10/2023 22:31

DS got his about 4 weeks before the end of yr 6. There was much debate about whether they were even allowed to wear them instead of school jumpers so the mum's WhatsApp group made a collective decision to send every kid in with it on and then they were allowed for the rest of term.

Our PTA fundraised and provided them for free, with a voluntary donation. Proper voluntary. It was not run through the school at all and every kid got one and their order placed before parents were sent the link to donate. It was a really lovely way of doing it and making sure everyone was included.

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 05/10/2023 22:41

Nice idea! Id never heard of this before but why not?

Mind you I think all primary kids should be in much more comfortable uniform than they generally wear.

snowball98 · 05/10/2023 22:42

Our school is organised by the parent Council and we give them out the week before the Easter holidays and the school allows them to wear them to school for the final semester.

Not sure about never wearing them again, I see leavers hoodies all the time at all times of the year even outside of school term. The kids seem to love them.

DappledThings · 05/10/2023 22:43

I wouldn't want mine too. Bit scruffy looking when the rest of the school won't be.

But then I think they're a daft idea anyway. Our PTA have nothing to do with it so I assume some parents organise it. I'll buy them if DC want them to fit in but I wpnt be encouraging it

PandaExpress · 05/10/2023 22:46

Good idea. My son got one leaving high school (they received them the day they left) He's worn it exactly two times 😒 Such a waste of £30!

Titective · 05/10/2023 22:47

Our school already has theirs.

Yourebeingtooloud · 05/10/2023 22:48

Yes ours do this and it’s fab. They love that their uniform sets them aside as Y6 for the whole year and it’s a really special thing for them all. Plus good value for money (though ours were only £10 in the first place!)

Cantthinkofadifferentname · 05/10/2023 22:50

I organised hoodies for my DDs year, 2 years ago. I wanted to get them out latest Feb half-term but Head said not until after stats

DrMadelineMaxwell · 05/10/2023 22:55

Our HT wanted them to wear them last week of term only.
I put my foot down and suggested that we get them earlier. We get them in the spring term in time for the residential, then they can wear them as part of PE kit for the rest of the year.

AvocadotoastORahouse · 05/10/2023 23:00

Our Primary 7 leavers (Scotland) got their Leaver hoodies sometime between the Tattie (October) holidays and the Christmas break and could wear them whenever they liked.

So they got the good out of using them in the colder winter months. Most kids seemed to wear theirs a lot of the time.

They were the same colour as the usual school sweatshirts and all the leaver names were only on the back, so from the front they looked similar for photos, lining up etc.

Def better to get them earlier.

StarlightLime · 05/10/2023 23:00

Agree. One of my kids had theirs (well, the whole year group's) arrive after they'd left!

VivaLaVolvo · 05/10/2023 23:01

Or rather don't have them at all
They are unnecessary and elitist.

IWasFunBeforeMum · 05/10/2023 23:01

We were given them as a leaving gift from nursery (eye roll at fees being used for this rubbish) and my son said but I'm going to school soon, don't want to wear it. Such a huge waste of money.

Aparecium · 05/10/2023 23:02

Especially when they grow out of their uniform and will need a different colour or style for secondary. Such a waste to have to buy uniform for only a term or two. Our school allowed the Y6s to wear their hoodies once SATs were finished.

Runnersandtoms · 05/10/2023 23:04

My kids wore theirs loads after they left the school, even after they started secondary school. I see other kids round town wearing them all the time too. Ours were given them in time to take on their year 6 residential (after SATS were over).

elliejjtiny · 05/10/2023 23:04

Agree. My year 11 has been wearing his leavers hoodie since the beginning of term. My year 6 won't get his until June.

Mariposista · 05/10/2023 23:06

VivaLaVolvo · 05/10/2023 23:01

Totally agree with you.
I am so relieved that my daughter hates hoodies, she prefers a zip up sweater and no hoods. Expensive waste of money.

sillyuniforms · 05/10/2023 23:06

Our school refuses to let them until a couple of weeks after SATs. Concerns over behaviour which was just mad as uniform casual anyway

Starbeeees · 05/10/2023 23:11

Pretty standard in their last year here, never saw them wear actual uniform

ReadingSoManyThreads · 05/10/2023 23:22

YABU

Or just scrap them altogether. Another thing for parents to shell out money for. When I see children wearing leavers hoodies I always think "so what?!".
