Swollen/lump in middle of neck

Don't know where to put this question sorry!

I'm still getting over a weird flu from last Monday - no cold symptoms just flu symptoms.

I noticed a swelling in the middle of my neck in the middle - it just looks like a small bulge that im sure I didn't have before. It is very mild looking - not noticeable until I saw my neck from the side in the mirror. Instead of my neck going straight down it seems to slightly bulge out.

Is this simply a minor swollen gland/lymph node from my flu or should I be concerned?
To add - I do have massive health anxiety and I also have nervous swallow (I excessively swallow simply due to nerves).

Hope someone can help! Thanks

Goitre? See your GP OP.

bluejelly · 02/10/2023 20:13

Don't panic. Do go to your GP. Good luck

HironsBirons · 02/10/2023 20:16

Thyroid nodule or goitre. Needs to be checked ASAP. I’ve got one and it’ll be surgically removed this week, my GP initially referred me on the 2 week cancer pathway. That was over 2 years ago, so it’s fine. Please don’t worry, thyroid issues tend to be quite slow moving.

monkeymoox · 02/10/2023 20:17

@ladypenelopesfan

No it's further up than that and nowhere near as bad as the photos on Google! It's very mild but I can't help but panic

I'll try get a photo - it is really minor I think but I'm panicking :(

I get little swollen glands on the sides of my neck whenever I get a really bad cold or flu (or covid).

monkeymoox · 02/10/2023 20:29

@AllProperTeaIsTheft

It's in the middle rather than the sides :( it might just be my neck but it does seem to stick out a bit. I just think it's convenient that I've got this after I've had flu that I'm still recovering from. But unfortunately my brain doesn't work like that :(

Here is a photo of it from the side. Can't see anything from the front.

Please tell me I'm being stupid and it's just a neck.

When I look up it goes and my necks smooth.

Looks like thyroid

monkeymoox · 02/10/2023 21:00

Are you sure this won't be flu related? I only noticed it yesterday

Thyroid. Get checked asap. This was my goitre (thankfully non cancerous but I had half my thyroid removed).

That's your thyroid

monkeymoox · 02/10/2023 23:36

What do I do now?! I'm so scared

OP posts:
Beepbopadooda · 02/10/2023 23:46

Call the GP in the morning. Don't be scared, goitres and thyroid problems are not uncommon in women. They'll know what to do. Most goitres are not cancerous. It will all be okay.

TheShellBeach · 02/10/2023 23:50

Thyroid issues are easily treatable.

Onthetipofmytonguetoo · 02/10/2023 23:53

That’s a goitre. I have one. Dr noticed it before I did. Lots of worry in The beginning. I have some big nodules on my thyroid and had several inconclusive biopsies. So they monitor annually. It’s barely grown since it was discovered in 2017. I used to have horrible anxiety about it but now I am just grateful that they are happy to check it over once a year.

I can't cope with thiS

But there's nothing to cope with.
Make a GP appt and either get medication or they'll keep an eye on it. What's the problem?

monkeymoox · 03/10/2023 00:09

@TheShellBeach

I've had two surgeries already last year and I just mentally can't take anything else

I've got a lump that swells up when I'm sick. I've had it probably twenty years by now. The doctor told me it was my little friend!

monkeymoox · 03/10/2023 00:11

@WereYouListeningToTheDudesStory

really?! Is this in your neck too in the same place as mine?

Why do you think you'll need surgery though?
A lot of goitres just disappear spontaneously.

Just my luck and panic. I have fertility problems too so Im just thinking im screwed now with this on top

Youthinkyoureuniqueyourejustastatistic · 03/10/2023 00:18

Are you sure it was the flu and not covid? It’s just….there’s a lot of covid around and hardly any flu…anyways…there’s a type of thyroiditis caused by viral infections…(search for Thyroiditis on the NHS website). Not sure if it causes a swelling or not.

BUT - also - issues with the thyroid can cause mild fever and chills etc anyway. So could be thyroid.
