Swollen/lump in middle of neck

Don't know where to put this question sorry!

I'm still getting over a weird flu from last Monday - no cold symptoms just flu symptoms.

I noticed a swelling in the middle of my neck in the middle - it just looks like a small bulge that im sure I didn't have before. It is very mild looking - not noticeable until I saw my neck from the side in the mirror. Instead of my neck going straight down it seems to slightly bulge out.

Is this simply a minor swollen gland/lymph node from my flu or should I be concerned?
To add - I do have massive health anxiety and I also have nervous swallow (I excessively swallow simply due to nerves).

Hope someone can help! Thanks

Posters here are making thyroid swelling sound very sinister! I have benign thyroid nodules - 95% of them are benign and never need surgery unless they cause symptoms that bother you like affecting your voice or looking bad and making you feel insecure. Mine have no symptoms so my doctor said no need for any action. Just ultrasound every year or so for peace of mind. Also my doctor told me that if you have covid it can cause existing swelling in the body to… swell more? So even if you have thyroid nodules they might have swollen up due to covid and will return to normal afterwards.

OP, I just want to say you don’t have to live with health anxiety. I used to be absolutely crippled by it to the extent it was ruining my life. CBT and medication were life-changing for me and I can honestly say I have it under control now. Five years ago I never thought that would be the case.

I mean 95% of ALL thyroid nodules are benign. And they’re also extremely common, especially in women. (So many women have them and don’t even know because they often cause no symptoms). My thyroid is neither overactive nor under active. Thyroid nodules are often hereditary - mine are, my granny had them (also benign and never caused her any symptoms either).

You won’t necessarily have surgery. They’ll check it out and probably just monitor you.

It seems to have gone down a lot...

Is this likely to be my thyroid even though the swelling has significantly gone down??

No-one here is a GP OP, (and even if they were they would not be able to help you unless a) you were their patient and b) without a full examination/medical history.

So you need to see your own doctor OP.

@ladypenelopesfan

I'll go tomorrow ☹️

Excellent 🙂

Go to your doctor ASAP. Lots of things it can be but probably thyroid. Do not leave it.

Update if anyone's interested:

I sent the doctor a photo and he thinks it's just inflamed from flu and that is common. He didn't want me to get it checked for at least a month if it doesn't go down!

That's really good news, OP.
Thanks for the update.

Ah, great news OP, wish you all the best

monkeymoox · 04/10/2023 13:52

Thank you. I'm not overly convinced seeing as it was from the photo on here! But fingers crossed it goes down. I will push for a blood test anyway.

To be fair, that's your anxiety messing with your head.
Your doctor will review you in a month.
That's reasonable and appropriate.

@TheShellBeach

I hope so 🥵 thank you
