WIBU to dress in costume for Rocky Horror?

OK don't laugh please 🙈 I'm 37 and going to see rocky horror performance tomorrow. I am debating wearing a (fairly tame) costume of magenta. Basically just a black dress with pinafore over it so a kind of French maid (not sexy, I am not sexy). Last time I went to see it I was about 22 and everyone was dressed up but I just had a wave of anxiety that maybe nobody does that anymore and I can't imagine many things more humiliating than being the only one looking like a plank. Has anyone been recently who can confirm if this is still the done thing?

I went last Halloween (London) and was sad nobody had dressed up OR had any props. What’s the world coming to?!

SuperNewMe · 29/09/2023 22:04

Haven't been but surely that's half the fun of going to see Rocky Horror Show?!
Everyone gets dressed up!
Go for it

XenoBitch · 29/09/2023 22:05

It played in my town a while back, and loads of people dressed up.

Do it! I hope you have a blast.

Well this was what I thought but reading @PlatinumBrunette post I'm not so sure. Maybe in London people are too cool? If so that's less of a concern in Bradford...

We did up north last year, wore stripy PJ's and lab coats and corsets etc, great fun

OK, this is reassuring thank you (tentatively dusts off fishnets...)

Damn it Janet....you have to dress up.
I have seen Rocky Horror 3 times in the last year and a half.
Dressing up is part of the fun. Be brave and go as dressed up as you want to be. I am quite self conscious about my looks - Rocky Horror is the one time I can dress ridiculous and no one cares.

Haha! Yes, it was a deeply cool place so I wasn’t entirely surprised, just a shame it was ‘just a movie’.

Knitgoodwoman · 29/09/2023 22:08

Obviously you have to do it!! Have an amazing time.

tintinandhisdogsnowy · 29/09/2023 22:08

I went years ago. Everyone was dressed up. It was great fun. Loads of people in fish nets and corsets. The best bit was the loos in the interval. Clouds of hairspray and red lipstick everywhere.

It will NEVER be just a movie!

In Bradford, absolutely dress up. Can I come?

randomrandom · 29/09/2023 22:11

Some people will, some people won't. Just do it and enjoy!

gotomomo · 29/09/2023 22:11

I went years ago. Was a hilarious night out. Spotting the late 40's/early 50's tech support for my university dept in full frank'n furter basque and suspenders was the icing on the cake!Grin

OnlyFannys · 29/09/2023 22:12

OK thank you all, these comments have thoroughly reassured me. I was worried about legally blonde vibes being the only one at the party dressed in costume so I had a last minute flap. I will even crack out the eyeliner now. Thank you all!!!

Are going with friends? Can you agree to dress up? Then it doesn’t even matter if no-one else has.

I freely admit, I wouldn’t want to risk being the only one dressed up, and again freely admit that says more about me than anything else!

QuillBill · 29/09/2023 22:12

My teenager went a few weeks ago. She knew nothing about it really but her friend insisted they dressed up so she did and when she got home she said she was so pleased they had because absolutely loads of people had dressed up and they were in the majority.

I'd say it was 75% Jeans and T-shirts, 25% dressed up at the one I went to

Only if you dress up

Going with boyfriend but he basically dresses like Eddie every day so it's not as.much of a dilemma

Yes I was thinking about just playing it safe but then I would regret it of I did and everyone else was dressed up. My back up plan was wear a black dress and take the pinne in my bag and whip it on in the toilets if everyone was dressed up but that feels like I'm overcomplicating things

Saw it in Leeds this year, EVERYONE dressed up, I mean EVERYONE, I felt out of place wearing just a corset and party hat!!!! I came seriously under dressed, I had the same fear as you, and normally I don't care what others think x

CakeInAJar · 29/09/2023 23:16

You’d be more likely to be looked at funny if you DIDNT dress up OP

Fucketoffsox · 29/09/2023 23:27

Teenage DD and I went 2 weekends ago to an afternoon showing, about 1/4 of the audience were dressed up ( we dressed as Transylvanian/ phantoms in sequinned tail coats, white shirts, bow ties and black trousers with party hats and sunglasses) When we came out of the theatre the evening performance audience were arriving and I would say 80 percent were dressed up, with a wide range of outfits, some dressed in jeans, T-shirts and a feather boa to full ‘Frank’ outfits.
Whatever you decide to do, have a fab time!
