AIBU to ignore this? My cat...

NC for this as will add a photo. My cat has arrived home tonight with paper taped round his neck saying he needs to be fed, AIBU to just ignore?

Last week someone posted on a neighbourhood app asking if anyone recognised a cat, it was eating kitten food in her garden (during the day) that she'd put out for a hedgehog. I don't have the app (so can't reply), but was sent the photo by a relative who found it funny. I ignored it as he's a cat, eating cat food, he's clearly not a stray and is microchipped, and he came home as normal that evening.

Tonight he has come home with this round his neck, presumably from the same person. My close neighbours know him and know he's mine, we think this lady lives a street up.

AIBU to just ignore this, or do I need to sort it with her? He's a bloody cat, I could feed him 8 times a day and he'd still eat cat food left out in a garden...

Forgot to add, I know he's a healthy weight, he's just had his yearly booster which comes with a health check and the vet said he was perfect size and weight!

No YANBU to ignore it. It's passive aggressive

Anonnymommy · 27/09/2023 20:48

I always think back to the days wen cats were allowed to be cats and roam and come home. Every other post I see on Facebook now is about a cat whose "straying" yet said cat looks perfect cared for and healthy with a bell on its neck.

Scampuss · 27/09/2023 20:48

Stick a paper collar on with "I'm a greedy fucker, and I am not starving" perhaps with a link to the book Six Dinner Sid...

Angryappendix · 27/09/2023 20:48

Oh my god! I would be furious!! Why do people do this?

I would absolutely go round and say your cat is perfectly healthy and well cared for. Not that you have anything to prove.
I wouldn’t ignore as I wouldn’t want her to keep posting about my cat or feeding him.

Angryappendix · 27/09/2023 20:49

@Scampuss perfect 🤣

Oh this!! Please do this!!!

and send us pics …🤣🤣🤣

BrightLightTonight · 27/09/2023 20:52

I would put a reply on saying, not hungry - just greedy - do not feed

I also wouldn't ignore as otherwise they'll keep feeding your cat.

Can your relative reply in the app to confirm your cat is healthy and just had a vet checkup who confirmed he's a healthy weight?

MyCatIsFatMax · 27/09/2023 20:55

@Scampuss this was my DH's suggestion 😂 he won't keep a proper collar on for me so who knows how he made it home with a paper one on.

Also I just googled Six Dinner Sid and it appears to be the exact same book as Fat Lawrence (not fat max as I put in my username, no idea how I got that wrong), but written 10 years earlier, how on Earth did Fat Lawrence get away with that!

My vet advised us to put a diabetic alert collar on our cat when someone did something similar to us. She said that the do not feed one's are good, but tend to be ignored, but the diabetic ones work well at stopping people feeding them and let them know that they're well cared for.

I would be really pissed off I would have to say something

MyCatIsFatMax · 27/09/2023 20:58

@Angryappendix @HeckyPeck I don't think she's feeding him on purpose, I actually think she's quite annoyed about him eating the food as she's said it's meant for the hedgehogs (even though it's out in the day). I get the impression she thinks if I feed him more he won't eat the cat food she is putting out? Even though he definitely will cos he's a greedy bastard.

They want to be glad his brother, the even greedier bastard, doesn't leave our garden!

Oooh that's a great idea @ImInACage, I will try that. He ripped his proper collar off in 2 days so I don't know if he'd keep it on, of course he was fine to leave the paper one on to wind me up though.

There's also one in a similar vein called "Twinkles, Arthur and Puss" 🐈‍⬛

Helenahandkart · 27/09/2023 21:02

My cat appears to be permanently starving, no matter how much we give her. It makes me furious when randoms feed other people’s cats. We have to manage our cat’s diet really carefully to stop her getting fat.

I would definitely stick a paper collar on your cat saying ‘do not feed - medical issues- well cared for’

I’ve seen so many posts on here justifying feeding other people’s cats. Please don’t do it, you could be causing a lot of harm.

wayyour · 27/09/2023 21:02

What madness is this people putting paper collars on cats like that, with messages, because it ate some of the cat food intended for the hedgehogs.

Of course the local cats will eat it too, and other things.

AInightingale · 27/09/2023 21:03

He's a tom cat! We have one of our own, who is so greedy that I have to keep his packets of food in a plastic tub on top of the fridge, or he would open the cupboard, chew a hole in the box, and suck the food out of the sachets.

He is perfectly well fed.

There is a tom cat lives behind us, absolutely huge, who comes through our kitchen window in summer and eats the cat and dog food. His owner actually bought him a collar saying DO NOT FEED.

My cats eat anything, even the suet my neighbour puts out for birds.

It's just what they do, particularly males. Your neighbour sounds batshit frankly, and knows absolutely sweet fa about cats.

wayyour · 27/09/2023 21:04

even though it's out in the day

So she doesn't know much about hedgehogs either.

Butterfly898 · 27/09/2023 21:08

This is so annoying! My cats stick to our garden but agree with a PP that nowadays everyone seems to think that a roaming cat is a stray or needs feeding. Constant posts on our local Facebook group about perfectly healthy “lost” cats whose owner clarifies they aren’t lost.
The person who did this clearly doesn’t know much about my cats - like yours mine would eat 100 meals a day if given the opportunity.
YANBU. I’d be tempted to send him out with a paper collar on saying he is vet certified healthy and do not feed - but I’m petty.

HotelNotPortofino · 27/09/2023 21:12

Are you sure your cat didn’t write it himself?

RumbleMum · 27/09/2023 21:13

If you can, I would go to speak to the person you think it is, otherwise they might start feeding your cat. God knows my cat would love that arrangement - I found the greedy bastard eating half a loaf of bread under a tree the other day. He’d obviously nicked it from a neighbour’s bin, so if any of them started feeding him his waistline would be buggered.

100% this!

we had a local one of these types who broke in to our house and ate our cats food

Lottie4 · 27/09/2023 21:21

How is a cat meant to know the food is for hedgehogs not for him😂?

We certainly had a Four Dinner Sid. He'd go next door for a snack and sleep on someone's lap, then over the road for another snack and sleep on elderly persons bed, then for a proper meal opposite and sleep in the chap's lounge or greenhouse and then come home starving!
