AIBU to ignore this? My cat...

NC for this as will add a photo. My cat has arrived home tonight with paper taped round his neck saying he needs to be fed, AIBU to just ignore?

Last week someone posted on a neighbourhood app asking if anyone recognised a cat, it was eating kitten food in her garden (during the day) that she'd put out for a hedgehog. I don't have the app (so can't reply), but was sent the photo by a relative who found it funny. I ignored it as he's a cat, eating cat food, he's clearly not a stray and is microchipped, and he came home as normal that evening.

Tonight he has come home with this round his neck, presumably from the same person. My close neighbours know him and know he's mine, we think this lady lives a street up.

AIBU to just ignore this, or do I need to sort it with her? He's a bloody cat, I could feed him 8 times a day and he'd still eat cat food left out in a garden...

I think my cat isn't being fed by anyone, but I do know he will happily go into anyone's house if there is access!
I too feed hedgehogs, but only put food out at dusk.

Gingerkittykat · 27/09/2023 21:31

I don't think you should ignore this as she might decide your cat is a poor starving stray and shut him in her house or take him to the vets, it's something I have seen on a local group.

I would personally join the ap just to reply to the posts about your cat to let her know he has an owner.

I would also advise her to make a hedgehog feeder that cats can't enter!

Scampuss · 27/09/2023 21:33

More seriously, OP, maybe you could say to her that you'll try and keep him in at dusk when the hedgehogs are out feeding but beyond there's little you can do.

My last cat used to attend neighbours' barbecues as well as try and eat their cats' food. I had a visiting cat who came in mostly to play with catnip toys.

Post on the neighbourhood app:

Here's a common scam that is going around that you should know about:

Sometimes cats will meow at you like they haven't been fed, but in fact someone DID feed them and they're just trying to get fed again

Are you sure your cat didn’t write it himself?

🤣

MediumDwarf · 27/09/2023 21:38

Best comment so far 😂

Stick a paper collar on with "I'm a greedy fucker, and I am not starving" perhaps with a link to the book Six Dinner Sid...

This - people don't get that cats will eat if food it there - they are greedy toe rags

Mine will try and eat everything

My dd had 2 rescue dcats for 2 years.. Ndn took a shine to them and started feeding them. So regularly dd struggled to get them in at night.. Then she started moaning about the cost to dd. Dd told her to stop feeding them. Then she told dd other neighbours were complaining dcats were trying to get in their doors.. Every single neighbour has 2 dcats and a ddog except dd (no ddog). Ndn started putting nasty notes through her door... Dd rehomed dcats last month far away. Batshit ndn was a fucking busybody..poor dcats.
Told dd to tell ndn they were pts after all the 'complaints'.. She hasn't asked dd about them as yet..

INeedAnotherName · 27/09/2023 21:48

The RSPCA and Cats Protection both suggest a paper collar to find out if a cat is owned. Get your friend to respond to the post, and put a paper collar on your cat to say it's being fed.

I have had multiple cats try and eat my hedgehog food and now have it hidden behind a brick maze to prevent them. However I've had to rehome three cats in three years via CP as they seemed extremely hungry, no chip and nobody responded to posters or online (and out 24/7 including in threat to life storms and 2ft snow).

Kanelsnegl · 27/09/2023 21:52

How ridiculous to put out cat food and then get annoyed when a cat eats it. Not like they know it's for hedgehogs.

I always say my cat has the memory of a goldfish regarding food. Seems like he has no recollection of ever having been fed in his entire life whenever there's a chance of food. He's just greedy.
I would put a note on him just saying that.

pictoosh · 27/09/2023 21:56

What a silly woman. Just ignore it.

CaroleSinger · 27/09/2023 22:02

I suppose my only concern would be what her next step will be as he's obviously going to keep going back. She's tried photos on social media and now putting passive aggressive notes on him. What next? I think I'd be inclined to tell her he isn't hungry, he just found a free dinner.

AIBU to imagine when the cat wasn’t playing with catnip toys it was fluffing pillows and doing some dusting?

I wish! He used to leave a right mess. Toys everywhere.

Flyingfup · 27/09/2023 22:10

The person putting an open bowl out for hedgehogs is not thinking it through. It needs to be under a low cover to stop cats and birds (gross if it is chicken flavour) eating it and to protect hedgehogs while they eat.

StopFuckingTouchingMe · 27/09/2023 22:11

DH usually feeds our cats when he gets in from work. But if he's late back, I'll feed them. The cats will wolf it down and lick the bowls clean, then as soon as DH walks through the door they're all over him with the meowing and the head boops and the sad eyes, like they're starving orphans.

Cats will mug you off at every opportunity. Your neighbour is getting scammed by the best scammers in the animal kingdom.

Regholdsworthswaterbed · 27/09/2023 22:16

Your cat is a chancer, begging for food despite being well fed at home and someone, who knows nothing about cats, thinks he's hungry. I have one of these, I shamed her on Facebook so people wouldn't take pity and feed her!

TiredMamOfTwo · 27/09/2023 22:22

One of my cats does this, to the point there was a Facebook post concerned asking if he had a home as he was always eating their cat food left outside.
He was overweight and clearly well looked after 😂
I put a post up saying please don't feed him he's just a greedy CF.

I'd just pop round and tell her to stop leaving cat food out in the day for the hedgehogs and wait till night!

Neverknewidfindmyselfonhere · 27/09/2023 22:23

My cat is super friendly and is always in the street asking to be petted by passers by. He has a thyroid problem and is quite old so he looks a bit thin and dishevelled. Eats like a horse though! We had a couple knock the door and give us 2 boxes of Whiskas (with receipt) as a gift for him. The shame of people thinking we don't feed him enough! He did enjoy his gift though

Shadypaws23 · 27/09/2023 22:27

Cats are shameless
Look at this photo, you think lovely relaxed cat happy in its home right, enjoying the scratch post?

It's not my cat Hmm

My last mog was like that too. Thyroid issue, and had a allergy to a lot of food so could only eat certain things. I knew when he was being fed elsewhere as he would projectile shit in the house.
Also very friendly and a total love sponge. The local "cat rescuer" (read local crazy cat lady who collects what she thinks are strays) ended up keeping him in the end.

I thought of this book straight away. Your cat is just living his best life. Dont worry. X

Ikeepmybumcheekshidden · 27/09/2023 22:34

@Neverknewidfindmyselfonhere PLEASE tell me you corrected them?? The presumptuous, patronising gits! I'd be giving them a huge erasing and hanging the cat food straight back to them!!!
