Tesco refunded wrong payment card and now I can’t access my cash

Just that really. I purchased two items from F&F in my local Tesco with the intention of keeping one and returning the other. No changing room as small shop so bought both.

When I purchased I collected my Clubcard points via a Clubcard credit card and then used debit card to pay.

I returned the item today, showed receipt got asked for both cards and she asked me to insert Clubcard first presumably so they could deduct points, fine. Then she wasn’t concentrating and allowed the refund to go on to my credit card. I didn’t press accept and she said she was unable to reverse refund and put money in the account I used to purchase. She Apologised but I had intended on drawing that cash out of a cash machine. I my bank the available funds show as soon as card is used.

Im really annoyed, yes I could take the cash out using credit card but I’d get a cash advance fee.

Why are they so incompetent ?

Why didn't you just buy the two items again then get her to refund you back onto your debit card?

tuvamoodyson · 27/09/2023 15:38

How much is the cash advance fee?

TookTheBook · 27/09/2023 15:40

I couldn't bring myself to get worked up about this - you have the refund, just in a different place. Spend that amount on something else on your credit card and the cost is covered, sorted. It's just a cashflow issue.

This sounds like the answer!

Sirzy · 27/09/2023 15:43

I think the paying by two different cards has understandably caused confusion.

Blondeshavemorefun · 27/09/2023 15:43

Use the cc to Pay for whatever you were using the cash for

Fairospop22 · 27/09/2023 15:43

For those asking why I didn’t purchase both items and get refunded on to my debit card, I asked her to do this and she refused

Simple answer! It's sorted, OP.

Exactly this. Spend on the credit card. Or contact the credit card company and ask them to transfer the amount you are in credit to to your debit card.

Fairospop22 · 27/09/2023 15:45

@Sirzy i didn’t pay by two different cards. My Clubcard is linked to my credit card as same card.

Fairospop22 · 27/09/2023 15:47

@TookTheBook i needed the physical cash for a specific reason. £40. Thanks for this idea but would not resolve issue

Can you not just withdraw the cash from your credit card?

Rudolphthefrog · 27/09/2023 16:00

OP I don’t think you’ll get far with a complaint, but it is annoying. Do check the refund has actually gone to your credit card though.

It’s perfectly normal and common to use a Tesco credit card as a clubcard and pay with something else, I do it all the time and the system is set up so it treats it like a clubcard initially rather than assuming it’s being used as payment. Even if I have already swiped a basic clubcard if I try to pay with a Tesco credit card I always seem to have to present the card twice as it only uses it as a clubcard the first time!

queenmeadhbh · 27/09/2023 16:01

Not sure I understand the Clubcard credit card. Is it a Tesco bank credit card that takes over and replaces your Clubcard, so when you want to get points you swipe the credit card but as the Clubcard before paying with a different card…can you not have a normal Clubcard as well as the Tesco credit card to use when you don’t want to pay with the credit card? Because the current set up sounds like a recipe for confusion which it clearly has been!

JustEatTheOneInTheBallPit · 27/09/2023 16:14

Alternative perspective: it’s 2 days until payday and OP has just £40 left which she needs in cash. Now she can’t access it as cash and this is very annoying.
But, it’s not the sort of thing she can complain about. A resolution would take longer than her next cash injection and might be a little embarrassing to pursue. Rather get it off your chest anonymously online.

Cosyblankets · 27/09/2023 16:16

Surely you have to click accept?

Can you not just withdraw the cash from your credit card?

This is a bad idea as it will incur charges immediately

Name99 · 27/09/2023 16:24

Surely a refund on a debit card isn't instant anyway, it takes a couple of days?

Cakeandcardio · 27/09/2023 16:49

Phone Tesco customer service. Usually they will give you a goodwill voucher if they can't actually fix the problem. They might do both!

Dis626 · 27/09/2023 16:51

Even if they had put the refund on your debit card, you wouldn't have access to the cash straight away as it takes a few days to process.

Fairospop22 · 27/09/2023 17:04

@Cosyblankets evidently not

OP posts:
Zebedee55 · 27/09/2023 17:08

Just spend on the card that has been refunded.😗

Aposterhasnoname · 27/09/2023 17:09

A refund on the debit card would have taken a few days anyway, so just use the credit card to pay for something else, then withdraw the money you would have used for that. Easy.

Fairospop22 · 27/09/2023 17:20

@JustEatTheOneInTheBallPit thank you. Yes this is my situation
