To delete the MN app because of the sudden huge battery drain over the last few days?

Losing 30% charge after 20 minutes on MN 😬 Not cool.

What's wrong with the app? Anyone else having this problem?

I'm glad to know it isn't just me! My phone gets piping hot also!

TeaKitten · 23/09/2023 13:51

Just delete it and use the web browser version. Are you sure it’s not your phone?

NamechangeForthisquestion1 · 23/09/2023 13:52

Same here!

ThreeKneeRepeater · 23/09/2023 13:54

This happens to me too. Only on Mumsnet. I thought it was due to all the adverts and animated bits in between the posts, which I presume are there to annoy you and encourage you to pay for the ad free version.

itspiefortea · 23/09/2023 13:55

I'd say it's my phone because she's not the youngest model 😁 BUT this only started 2-3 days ago.

And YY to the phone getting my really hot too!

I don't have the app, but I experience the same rapid battery drain when using the MN mobile site on my iPhone. So now, I tend not to access it on my phone when I'm, say, waiting somewhere, because I know I'll run out of charge quite quickly.

It's the same with other sites that are extremely advert-heavy, such as a number of newspapers.

Sites that are 'safe' and not battery draining include the BBC and the Observer/Guardian, and Medscape. The latter is ideal for the hypochondriac in a doctor's waiting room.

Or we could try ad blockers? I put one on my laptop successfully. But on the other hand, MN is a free site, parts of which I appreciate, and needs the revenue.

Lemoncurd · 23/09/2023 13:58

Ah, was wondering if it was Mumsnet, my phone is only a few months old, has been getting really hot when I use the app over the last 2-3 days.

It can't solely be your phone! Not sure what you have but I have a relatively newer phone I believe. iPhone 14 pro max. My phone doesn't have issues setting the web or using any other apps. Within a couple min of me being on this app is when my phone starts acting up.

margotrose · 23/09/2023 14:00

Mine is the same. I think it's the app as it doesn't have the same issue with anything else.

MatthewsMumFromTikTok · 23/09/2023 14:03

Yes same here!

Only on mumsnet!

mynameiscalypso · 23/09/2023 14:04

This has been happening to me too. I'm glad it's not my phone giving up on me just yet!

blackcurrantqueen · 23/09/2023 14:05

Have also noticed the same ! How odd

Creepyrosemary · 23/09/2023 14:05

@MNHQ please look into this

mynameiscalypso · 23/09/2023 14:13

When I look at the stats on my phone, MN used over half the battery in the last 24 hours and I definitely haven't been on it half the time!!

Killingmytime · 23/09/2023 14:16

Yes! I ve got a new phone and mumsnet drains my bat! Its just ridiculous.
I also cant listen to my music as the stupid video play whether i click on them or not and stops my music
i just end up not coming on here so much now.

I read this and looked myself, 41 %! Everything else is under 10%! That is wild!

logicisall · 23/09/2023 14:26

The MN app's background activity is using 60% of the battery on my new iPhone 14 pro max, even though automatic app refresh is disabled.

MatthewsMumFromTikTok · 23/09/2023 14:26

But why could this be?? 🤔

FallGall · 23/09/2023 14:32

Blimey! I was eye rolling at these messages and thought "As if"

Then checked mine .....

27% mumsnet
19% Facebook
9% Tinder

Although I'm probably on mumsnet the most!!

iPhone. 11

margotrose · 23/09/2023 14:56

There's another thread going in Site Stuff but they're blaming the new iOS update, even though it's not happening to anyone on any other app Confused

daliesque · 23/09/2023 15:01

I noticed this on my iPad - it's 3 years old and an iPad Pro so wondered whether it was just getting old...

How do you check what's using your battery life?
And also your know that thing on iPhones and iPads where you do something that shows you all the apps that are open that you think are closed....I've only ever done it by accident....

MenopauseSucks · 23/09/2023 15:02

For me

Mumsnet 50%!!!
Google 23%

I spent this morning playing with the Google 3D animals but have only been on MN for 30mins whilst eating my lunch. And yes my phone is toasty.

(I spent far longer with Google 3D animals than on MN as my Dad & me were taking pics & swapping them which kept us both amused. I'm 51 & he's 82...)

Battery draining | Mumsnet

Hi. The Mumsnet app is really draining my phone battery today. It's not normally a problem. But in approx 5-10 mins it's drained from 90% to...

BertieBotts · 23/09/2023 15:07

Download an adblock browser, use MN mobile site on that browser only.

No more battery drain/crazy overheating.

My guess is that it will be a poorly coded app. MN use a third party service that provides ads and they often serve up really poor quality ads, either scammy ones or ones like this where it uses way too many resources.

logicisall · 23/09/2023 15:07

@daliesque
Settings <battery health

On iPhone, swipe up from bottom, pause halfway to see all open apps
