Bedwetter: will a cover less single duvet be handier?

I have a bed wetter and there are frequent changes of bedding. Would it be handier to have two coverless duvets and just swap them out when necessary? I’m a single parent with two ASC kids and frequently knackered. I’ve only a 7 kg washing machine. Is their marketing spiel correct? Do they squish happily into a washing machine with their “innovative fibres”?

Also consider a cotton blanket (warm and washable) and a woollen blanket (need less frequent washing).
I've seen people make up two layers of mattress protector and bottom sheet which they find helpful.

I think a single size will be fine in a 7 kg washing machine but not a double one. I have two coverless duvets as my arthritis makes it very difficult to put duvet covers on on my own. The winter one, 10.5 tog, just about squeezes in my 9 kg machine but takes a while to dry, more than 24 hours. I’m not sure if they can go in a tumble dryer, I need to check the labels.

I got a fully waterproof duvet cover. Keeps any wee absorbed into the cover so I only need to change that not wash the duvet anymore. That has made life much easier. The waterproof cover never seems to need washing itself either, it just repels liquid back to the decorative cover.

We have two doubles on our bed, they go in the machine fine. Come out dry almost

I bought a waterproof duvet after too many years of washing duvets in the machine. You still need to change the cover but the duvet itself just wipes clean and put a fresh cover on. It is expensive but worth it!Waterproof duvet

Single fleece blanket under a light duvet. Child loves it for extra cosiness, and less washing.

We used an opened out sleeping bag when it was warmer, before coverless duvets were a thing. Same sort of idea and it did fit in the washing machine.

I had loads of fleecy blankets when I had a bedwetter. They wash easily and dry quickly - don't know about the all in one duvets but I know you probably can't get more than one in the machine!

Maybe try a fleece blanket under the duvet (but on top of the child) first to see if it adequately keeps the pee off the duvet?

Ds has a single one at home and a double one at uni and they go in my washing machine and tumble dryer fine.

We used reusable puppy pad styles things for the bed. Cheeky wipes bed liner

Yes, definitely!! I wasn't keen on the idea of them but got 2 of these after finding it a nuisance to use waterproof duvet covers etc. They are extremely quick and easy to wash, they are thinner and take up much less room in the washing machine than a normal duvet. They dry spread out in a couple of hours as the fabric is microfibre not cotton. As they are not very thick you might need to add blanket(s) on top, although keep our DD surpsingly warm. We also use brolly sheets which make life so much easier and are really effective. You can also get cheaper versions eg these which dry quicker and we take them everywhere. Game changer!

Top sheet or blanket between them and the duvet.

This is the second one I've tried. First one wasn't properly waterproof and didn't actually stop anything getting through to the duvet. This one works great.

Does nobody else’s child seem to mess up the bed linen overnight do there is a mad combination of intertwined blankets and duvets? If I put a blanket under a duvet, it wouldn’t be in place in the morning. It would be twisted all over the place!

Also do waterproof duvets not feel hard and crinkly?

Not at all. You can’t really tell it’s different from a normal duvet.

Waterproof duvet cover is better, then a standard one on top. I also have doubled up on mattress protectors and have pillow protectors.

A wipeable mattress is a good idea when replacing. My dd (has asd) still has accidents as an adult unfortunately

Ds2 sleeps under a pile of fleecy blankets. Very easy to wash and dry, all year round.

We have two normal single duvets and use them with no cover. They wash and dry quite easily, been doing it for years now!

I have a king size cover less duvet and that fits into my larger drum machine so I’m sure a single would fit in a smaller machine

It very much depends on the coverless duvet you buy. A 4.5 tog single would fit in a 7kg drum ok but then you would have blankets to wash as well in winter. A 10.5 tog would be fine on it's own when the nights are cooler but it would be a tight squeeze in your machine and you might find it doesn't wash very well because there isn't room for it to be agitated properly.

My friend had a bed wetter.

She found the mid weight fleecy blankets the best option. They wash and dry easily and are not cold if the child wets the bed.

Also Waterproof mattress cover and a large thinner fleece on the bottom in place of a sheet.

Once her child had progressed she bought normal duvets.

I hear you. There's no way I'd he able.to get away with a blanket between child and duvet. All three would be completely tangled up overnight and I'd likely just have twice as much to wash.

We went for coverless duvets for bedwetting. Also layer bed so layer of waterproof sheet and fitted sheet then another waterproof sheet and fitted sheet. So can whip one layer off, swap duvet in middle of the night. Also brought 10kg washing machine.
Ended up with washable bedwetting pants and bottoms so saved bedding a bit

Absolute game changer for us. Bung in the machine & then dry in a couple of hours. No faffing about with duvet covers & layers. 4.5 tog summer, 10.5 tog winter. You won’t regret it.
