To not know if a banana bread and butter pudding would be good or gopping?

I need to take a few puddings to an event on Friday night.

I'm doing an apple pudding, a chocolate self-saucer (Ultimate pudding IMHO) and a bread and butter pudding..
Last night I was eyeing up the excess bananas on the fruit bowl and my mind started spiralling - banana and custard is a classic combination so should be good, yes? I'd put extra sugar in the top so it was caramelised bananas. And possibly add choc chips to the mix.

But there's something that makes me think that texturally this could be quite unpleasant?

Any thoughts or experiences are very welcome please..

YABU: move away from the fruit bowl, that's bonkers

YANBU: sounds delightful go for it

I think you should do it, just to find out. You could do two bread and butter puddings, one with banana in and one without, so if the banana'd version IS gopping, you'll still have a safe one to take. Surely it will be like a banana sandwich but caramelised, and hopefully with custard...

Any event that requires three puddings sounds splendid, no questions asked.

SoupDragon · 19/09/2023 09:34

Are you talking about the cake called banana bread or actual bread? I make actual bread in my breadmaker and that would work I think. I don't think the cake would.

SoupDragon · 19/09/2023 09:34

Or are you just adding bananas to the pudding? That would be fine. Utter sacrilege IMO though 😂

VanillaFlotilla · 19/09/2023 09:51

I think the problem here is that banana bread isn't really bread - it's more like cake texture-wise. Even though it falls into the 'quick bread' category. But it doesn't have the same chewy, dry texture as bread proper and won't absorb liquid & brown in the oven nicely like bread does. And banana bread gets soggy as hell if it gets wet. So - I'd say experiment on your own sure, but don't try it out for the first time on your guests! Use challah bread or a pannetone if you fancy using something a bit different in your pud.

I made bread and butter puddng with bananas on top, it was lovely. https://www.bbcgoodfood.com/recipes/banana-bread-butter-pudding

I think bread and butter pudding made from banana bread would be too gloopy, not quite right....

Or just make banana bread and serve with custard.

I would make banana sandwiches and layer these up to make the bread and butter pudding....with the custard it would be amazing!!!! Go for it!

phoenixrosehere · 19/09/2023 10:27

Where is OP saying she is using banana bread??

There are plenty of recipes out there via a quick google search nor is it an outrageous concept. I wouldn’t add the chocolate because I would think that would be overkill on the sweetness factor if you’re also using custard but that’s personal preference.

I think it would be fine by adding sliced bananas on top and caramelising them as planned.

Middleagedmeangirls · 19/09/2023 10:39

i love bananas but find cooked bananas overly sweet. I also dislike the slimy texture they get when cooked. So IMHO you are being completely bonkers.

Are you sure you need to add a 4th pudding? I would have thought the three you are already planning sound like a good mix. If you really need a 4th planned I think something lighter would be a nice addition, a lemon drizzle cake or strawberry mousse maybe ?

SchadenfreudeIstMeinMittelname · 19/09/2023 10:44

I think you should do a trial run with the banana bread and butter pudding and report back.

IHeartGeneHunt · 19/09/2023 10:45

I made one with banana jam once, that was very nice. I would go for it.

heathspeedwell · 19/09/2023 10:48

Brioche bread and butter pudding is foul - far too sickly. I suspect using banana bread might be just as unpleasant.

What about simply making a nice banana bread?

VegetablesFightingToReclaimTheAubergieneEmoji · 19/09/2023 10:50

I do it with banana quite often. Just layer the banana between the bread. I add chocolate chips instead of raisins.
I also do one with lots more cinnamon and one with caramel.
its nice.

Harrysarseinthedogbowl · 19/09/2023 11:10

I wish I had an excuse to make several puddings at a time!

pollo8 · 19/09/2023 11:16

Gopping? Never heard the word! OP, where in the country are you?

1stworldissues · 19/09/2023 11:21

OP. I have no comment on the recipe because bananas are the work of the devil

I am however loving your use of the word Gopping..... I use this word and people think I'm crackers!

colourwheelofortune · 19/09/2023 11:24

Sounds dreadful, but I'm no cook. Banana bread would be much better I think. If you do make the BBaBP don't label it as such, but think of a different name. Expectations won't be raised then

Doyoureallyhavetoask · 19/09/2023 11:25

I have made this and it's lovely! Lots of cinnamon sugar on top.

I have also learned a new word: "gopping".

Scruffington · 19/09/2023 11:31

I think the banana might end up look a bit gross once cooked. Like suppurating boils. Which isn't the most appealing. What you should make is a version of the Magnolia Bakery's banana pudding.

cruffinsmuffin · 19/09/2023 11:37

I mean I will willingly test this! I love American banana pudding (hello magnolia bakery 🤤) so am a fan of all things banana!

Please update if you do try it I would maybe recreate 😂

Gopping? Never heard the word! OP, where in the country are you?

I use gopping all the time! Born far down South, now reside up North.

TooOldForThisNonsense · 19/09/2023 11:39

gopping for me but then I hate cooked bananas 🤢

Staggersaurus · 19/09/2023 11:41

100% gopping 🤮

CurlewKate · 19/09/2023 11:46

Hot cross bun bread and butter pudding is absolutely wonderful!

user1492757084 · 19/09/2023 11:47

I would enjoy the bananas if they were just on top and caramelized.
The nicest Bread and Butter Pudding I have had was made with orange marmalade on the bread and butter and no dried fruit but some pistasio nuts and cream on top.
