Russell Brand - everyone knew

1000 replies

Mooshamoo · 18/09/2023 17:06

I was watching the comedian Katherine Ryan say to Louis theroux that a British comedian is a sexual perpetrator. It is now believed that she was talking about Russell brand. She said on the video "when it eventually comes out about these type of people, Harvey Weinstein, Bill Cosby, this unmentionable British personality, it turns out that everyone knew. Everyone knew. ".

I was wondering did anyone on here on mumsnet know anything about Russell brand? A lot of us lived in London when her was living there. And many women on here would have been a similar age to Russell brand . I lived in London for a year and I saw Russell brand out on a night out once. That was the extent of it. I was wondering did anyone on here have any experience with him, or know about a friend/acquaintance that had any experiences with him.

I doubt that that is possible.

TizerorFizz · 19/09/2023 16:57

@Mooshamoo So why did anyone think a man saying that was attractive and worth 1 second of their time?

StarbucksSmarterSister · 19/09/2023 16:59

He made her, and her colleagues lives a misery. He was awful to everyone, in a complete diva, power mad sort of way.

I know that my view may be coloured by the fact that I always thought he was awful, even before the Sachs phone call and therefore mostly avoided his programmes.

I don't want to divert this thread too much but surely I can't be the only person who can't understand how he got into such a position of power in the first place? Why was he was considered to be so desirable as guest/presenter/whatever that he could behave as he did when frankly he wasn't particularly good looking or charming or funny. What on Earth was it that people saw in him to start off with?

Standingchair1 · 19/09/2023 17:04

In more general terms, are you in favour of a system that says “guilty until proven innocent”? Or would you only apply that to cases where sexual assault is alleged?

I agree as I cannot see the appeal. But a good friend of mine fancied the pants off him, she tried to lend me his book, which

bombastix · 19/09/2023 17:05

Well isn't the unwritten bit of this story that basically, people either agreed or did not care?

I mean it's the obvious conclusion. Some did, but not enough to make any changes for a long time.

That's why you have all these excuses. They are really what a lot of people think. They may not want to admit it directly but it's the simplest explanation.

Orangebadger · 19/09/2023 17:05

Posted too soon, which I declined to read. When he was younger he was a kind of edgy pretty boy who oozed sex. Very anti establishment. Some people love that clearly!

Of course there’s an extremely clear distinction between being a) a rapist and b) not being a rapist but being promiscuous and a knob

What is your "extremely clear distinction"? You have stated it as "of course". I don't think its a matter of fact and I don't agree.

I think men who objectify women, use them for sex and are pricks as PP put it are far more likely to be rapists than most men.

And this line of "he's promiscuous and a prick, does not make him a rapist" is precisely why predatory rapists get away with it for so long.

They might be ‘far more likely’ but until they rape someone, they are not rapists

Do you really not see the distinction between a) someone who has raped someone and b) someone who has not raped someone

Really not interested in labouring this point any more with you. If you don’t get it, don’t worry

It's a mystery isn't it but I think it's because he is such a divisive character that he got airtime. Look at all the threads on Mumsnet about him, lots of people wanting to have sex with him and thinking he has a brilliant mind and lots finding him repulsive and stupid.
He is newsworthy. Even Mumsnet interviewed him.

I've always intensely disliked him too and I've always been baffled that so many women seemed to find him attractive.

Standingchair1 · 19/09/2023 17:13

let me guess …. your an ‘anti-vacxer”?

Standingchair1 · 19/09/2023 17:14

‘made him’?

The line becomes less clear when a power imbalance makes consent questionable.

Agree – very good point

Exactly, if no one gave these people their time then they wouldn't be on our screens. Work dried up and out of desperation he worked on YouTube and earned from that and whatever gig he managed to get.

daisychain01 · 19/09/2023 17:23

Hopefully he'll be crying into his beer tonight - his work and ability to monetise on YouTube has come to an end and his current "tour" is cancelled.

Oh dear, what a shame.

Couldn't have happened to a nicer person Grin

Standingchair1 · 19/09/2023 17:33

How many nights out socialising has your neighbour’s cat had with Russell Brand?

It's not just the money.

Social services will take an interest, he has two very young daughters and has been proven to be a sexual predator who is now under investigation for sexual assault and rape. The daughters need to be safeguarded.

TizerorFizz · 19/09/2023 17:56

Do they live with their mother? We don’t know how often he sees them.

I do think women need to wise up about self confessed sex addicts! Tell DDs they are really to be avoided. I cannot understand why women were fascinated. I think some did get something out of being with him though. It’s a lesson though. Look at the footage (that hasn’t been wiped) and tell DDs to avoid sleaze like that.

cavalier · 19/09/2023 18:01

I’ve always thought he’s a smug idiot .. .. gift of the gab
creepy … however the media need to do the right thing and back off incase of any legal proceedings.. it could get thrown out of court if it does go further surely the press know this ! 🤦🏻‍♀️… that’s what I’m worried about …

How often do you meet self-confessed sex addicts!?

TizerorFizz · 19/09/2023 18:32

@ehupo7 Its a type of person isn’t it. Many posters have used words to describe him that surely many would find revolting. But they didn’t. I’m purely saying his attitudes should be a red flag. And anyone similar. In my little world I don’t meet people like him. Clearly others do or there would not be a thread or a conversation!

Loubelle70 · 19/09/2023 18:44

lifeturnsonadime · 18/09/2023 17:42

And as much as I think he’s a total sleazeball I think he’s as much right to anonymity as his accusers/victims.

This is interesting to me.

Why should someone who is abusing women and abused children and has used a position of power to do so have a right to anonymity?

Yes, especially when these survivors will be scrutinised over something a man did against their wishes. The survivors are already being trialled by media

dwoon · 19/09/2023 18:44

which is what the girl who alleges the rape says he did to her … he is clearly highly intelligent, but a true narcissistic perversive manipulative predator quite obviously from the little we have already heard. His ex katie perry implied it at the time too, that she would hold onto that to use in future. It’s terrifying to think how many he really has 😱abused

dwoon · 19/09/2023 18:47

i think you are missing the pint here tbh and that statement is very hurtful to victims

dwoon · 19/09/2023 18:50

I can see the appeal in that to some, as is likely his intelligence … although now we truly understand the horror of his true manipulative persona

AtlanticMum · 19/09/2023 19:20

Hi. I kinda knew once KR said that. I only came across him once and not in London but not far away. He completely zoned in on a young 23/24 year old in an entertainment setting. It was creepy and uncomfortable. Tried warning off but was told might have been ‘jealous’ or being ‘old fogey-ish’ Which was not the case. It was watching coercion in action. The celebrity was very powerful in him. And you would have to say-it was consensual -she was ‘thrilled’ to have been ‘selected’. There was a definite ‘screw you’ to anyone who crossed him. I’m with Bob Geldof on this.
