Is it you driving in the middle lane of the motorway or outside lane on a dual carriage way?

Nobody is a perfect driver, including me.

But, why do people drive in the middle lane when they could easily pull in and stop the chaos they are causing behind them? Or pull in instead of driving in the outside lane of a dual carriageway when there is a large gap. On the M25 much of seems to be a fancy dual carriageway with 3 empty inside lanes. Why?

It's like advertising you're a crap driver and not willing to pay attention.

Or am I being unreasonable?

No, but it might be my husband. Drives me up the wall. I now choose to do most of the driving!

DinoMummsy · 13/09/2023 20:17

Nope, yanbu, the amount of clueless, lazy and downright dangerous driving I see on a daily basis annoys the pants off me. And why are half the drivers seemingly incapable of signalling? Totally lazy, ignorant gits! Does my tits in.

Twospaniels · 13/09/2023 20:21

Not us! If the left lane is empty after overtaking all the way over to the outside lane, I make a pint of returning all the way to the left lane, but it makes no difference, that person in the middle lane does not realise the point I’m making and resolutely stays in the middle lane.

If people used the lanes properly then there would be no need (IMO) for motorways to be made into 4 lanes, or for the so called smart motorways.

I think they should have more public information adverts on TV like we used to when I was a child (green cross code, wear light colours walking at night etc). They need to do a campaign advising drivings to return to the left after overtaking. Or if there is no other message on the overhead gantries then they could put something on there to remind people.

QuestionableMouse · 13/09/2023 20:25

There's a section of duel carriageway on my way to work where I need to turn right (across the other carriage way) via a slip road in the middle. If it's busy I tend to get over a bit earlier because otherwise you end up missing the slip road and going around adds about eight miles!

billysillydilly · 13/09/2023 20:27

I think people hog the middle lane & the outside lane. Often the inside lane is completely empty, does my head in!!!

VWT5 · 13/09/2023 20:32

I’ve had some success with my very “sarcastic indicating” when moving from lane 4 back to lane 1 - in front of some of these drivers.
How can they be so oblivious to whats going on in their read view mirrors.

chimichangaz · 13/09/2023 20:34

This really gives me the rage. How can they be so oblivious? Or do they do it deliberately??

BotterMon · 13/09/2023 20:36

About 70% of drivers do this it seems. I just undertake them and some get it and move over but only about 10%.

I think it's because the UK driving test doesn't do motorway driving which is a huge mistake.

Bagofcrisps · 13/09/2023 20:38

So nobody replying does it? Where are they all? Still driving home slowly in the middle fucking lane!

Liverpool52 · 13/09/2023 20:39

They'll be along soon. Eventually on one of these threads one of them comes along to try and defend their poor and dangerous driving.

User63847439572 · 13/09/2023 20:41

Occasionally it’s me
sometimes I just don’t notice
where there’s only 2 lanes and a stretch with lots of slip roads joining I don’t like having to constantly move over but don’t always notice if my speed has decreased

BeeEyeEnGeeOh · 13/09/2023 20:41

I often stay in the middle lane. I don't get why it's a problem. I'm doing 75-77 so no one should really be overtaking me and if they do want to break the speed limit there's a whole other lane to do so.

It means it's much easier for cars to join and leave so the left lane is left for that. Switching lanes is risky so surely better for all if we're doing it less?

I await the firing squad.

They always come and defend themselves, along the lines of I’m going the speed limit so there’s no need for anyone to go round me or it’s dangerous for me to change lanes so I’ll just stay in the one lane thank you.

NoCapesDarling · 13/09/2023 20:42

I still find it hard to believe that you only have to take a driving test once. I really think that there should be a theory and practical test every 10 years.

So many bad habits would be addressed and the roads would be much safer.

BeingATwatItsABingThing · 13/09/2023 20:42

YANBU! This gives me the rage! There are no excuses for it and it’s happening more and more.

Someone will be along with bullshit about the M25 inside lane being a filter lane every mile and it’s just completely not true. They also give you 2 miles of warning that it’s about to happen. If that isn’t enough time for you to safely move over, you really shouldn’t be driving.

😂😂😂 cross posted with this and it was brilliant!

icallitasplodge · 13/09/2023 20:44

Everyone undertakes these days, it’s seriously dangerous. You move from the middle to the outside lane and find someone doing 90 up your bum. You look obviously but there should only ever be slower moving traffic to your left.

SamW98 · 13/09/2023 20:46

It’s my biggest wind up when I’m driving on a motorway. The clueless middle lane hoggers doing 55 with hands fixed firmly in the 10 to 2 position eyes staring unblinkingly ahead. Completely oblivious to the virtually empty lane to their left and a stream of irate drivers in the right hand lane making hand gestures and swearing loudly

And the justification is nearly always that it’s safer not to change lanes - well if you’re not capable of using the correct lane without feeling unsafe, you shouldn’t be on a motorway

SquashPenguin · 13/09/2023 20:46

I undertake these people and wave at them. They look so gormless. About half the time they still don’t move over, they carry on in the middle lane, totally oblivious.

MoonlightMuse · 13/09/2023 20:47

Round here the outside lane is reserved for BMWs and Audis.

icallitasplodge · 13/09/2023 20:47

If you are undertaking you are worse. Someone legitimately moving to the left should not have faster moving traffic behind them.

Liverpool52 · 13/09/2023 20:48

@BeeEyeEnGeeOh So it's ok for you to break the speed limit but nobody else?

Yep. Always the same excuses as to why they are clueless and a danger to other road users
