To think whatever I do, getting a dog will make my house stink?

We fancy getting a dog next year. I'm just slightly concerned that the house will smell like a dog lives there regardless of the amount of hoovering and cleaning I do.

Are there any breeds that don't shed as much?

OP posts:

Non shedding dogs don’t smell??
Fnarrr.

Dogs and carpet are a recipe for smells as dog feet and bums are not hygienic.

Schnauzers are supposed to be low shedding but my dust bunny situation has definitely changed for the worse, and we have all hard floors.

It’s okay, you’ll go noseblind and convince yourself that your house doesn’t smell of dog 😁

Nonyummymummy · 13/09/2023 11:40

I think it depends on the dog. We have a Miniature Schnauzer who doesn't shed. He gets a bath every 2 to 3 weeks in between grooms. He does not like getting wet which is a big factor in my view in getting the "doggy' smell. He won't jump in lakes etc, also we put an equafleece on him on the really wet weather which helps.

idbegratedulforideas · 13/09/2023 11:43

The worse smell is from a damp dog

twinmum2022 · 13/09/2023 11:09

I've never been in a house with a dog that doesn't smell of dog.

I think people who live with the dog don't notice it, it's not always horrendous but I always smell it.

I wouldn't let that be the factor that puts you off a dog though, if you're ready get one 😊

I've never lived with a dog an no, not all dog houses smell of dog. I don't know why people say this... just to make others feel bad?

tinymeteor · 13/09/2023 11:50

Agree that a raw diet makes for a less smelly (and certainly less windy) dog

shakeitoffsis · 13/09/2023 11:52

@twinmum2022 totally agree!

Anna8089 · 13/09/2023 11:53

People who think because they do the housework , it won't smell. It most definitely does. Always. Same with cats. No matter the breed. You will just go nose blind whilst everyone that visits suffers the smell. Theres no getting away from that unfortunately.

BirdiePlantaganet · 13/09/2023 11:54

Get a non-shedding breed.

In my experience, it’s shiny coated shedding dogs that smell - but I wouldn’t go so far as to say their houses also smell. Some do, some don’t.

We know people that have a dog bed in every room and they looked well-loved (ie never washed). Now their house stinks of dog.

BeeEyeEnGeeOh · 13/09/2023 11:55

Every house with a dog smells of dog. Some owners think theirs doesn't as they're so used to it but it's noticeable to others. No matter how much you clean it.

twinmum2022 · 13/09/2023 11:58

@ItsNotRocketSalad obviously not. The OP asked a question and I gave them my opinion. The fact I've never been in a dog owners house that doesn't smell of dog is true. What you experience is also fine too.

Did I say the houses were gross or unclean? No. Not everything is a personal attack.

Blondeshavemorefun · 13/09/2023 11:59

Houses with dogs smell

As soon as you walk in you know they have a dog

Some friends houses really smell or dog

Some not so

But there is def a smell

We had Friends dog for a few days and I could smell our house smelling diff as I walked in

It went maybe a week or two after dog had gone

Some of it may be due to their bedding /or dogs theirlselves

So wash their beds /duvets what they lie on if on sofa blankets

Get dog washed /groomed to help the pong

Skogrammy · 13/09/2023 12:03

Get a Hypoallergenic Dog Breed.

Mine is 2.5kg and doesn’t shed at all and no she doesn’t smell. She’s bathed regularly and so small that there’s not much dog to smell.

She’s also not allowed upstairs.

This isn’t true.

i didn’t have a dog for years and years as a grown up and my partners auntie has 2 dogs and their house has never smelled.

Keep your house clean. Regularly wash stuff and don’t let a damp dog sit everywhere and it won’t smell.

My dog refuses to go out in the rain so rarely gets wet and she always smells fine.

The worse smell is from a damp dog

Not as bad as "dog that his rolled in something that may once have been a squirrel"

ForgottenPasswordNewAccount · 13/09/2023 12:10

Get a greyhound.
They dont have the gland that makes dogs smell#

"Greyhounds, like many sighthounds, do not produce the same oils that most breeds do and therefore don't get that 'doggy' smell and have fewer allergens."

shrodingersvaccine · 13/09/2023 12:15

I have two 40kg dogs and my house doesn't smell of dog. I've never understood the dog owners who say 'oh my house stinks but that's just part of having a dog isnt it'? Your house would stink of humans if you didn't clean it. The problem isn't the dog its the lack of cleaning.

Covers on sofas, furminator shampoo for baths, brush their teeth and a mud daddy for the car for after muddy walks so you can rinse them off. Wash their blankets, sofa covers and bedding once a week. Hard floors are best but if you've carpets, a bissell carpet cleaner works wonders!

Katiepants27 · 13/09/2023 12:15

Um, whoever said whippets don't shed, they definitely do! Millions of tiny short hairs that stick in the sofa and can't be hoovered out!!!
I agree they don't really smell though.

I would avoid a gundog at all costs, lovely though they are. They seem to have their own particular small which turns my stomach (must be the oily coat).

As others have said, best bet is regular bathing/grooming, and definitely wash dog beds as often as possible. Ours gets done every week.

SomeCatFromJapan · 13/09/2023 12:17

Sighthounds seem to be non-stinky.

Caroparo52 · 13/09/2023 12:18

A few small white dogs don't shed. For example
Bichon Frise.
They also don't like swimming so never soggy doggy problem.

ItsNotRocketSalad · 13/09/2023 10:51

Most houses with dog don't smell of dog. Keep the place clean and groom the dog and it will be fine!

I've never been in a house with a dog that didn't smell of dog! Not necessarily overpowering, but as a non dog owner it's immediate and unmistakable.

PomPomtheGreat · 13/09/2023 12:20

I have a very keen sense of smell and dislike the smell of dog in anyone's house. I was very surprised when my daughter got a cavoodle a year or two back that there is literally no dog smell in her apartment at all. His litter tray is out on the balcony, which probably helps. But the apartment smells as clean and fresh as it ever did. My daughter has hardwood floors throughout, but there is carpet in both of the bedrooms.

BarrelOfOtters · 13/09/2023 12:24

Keep them off the soft furnishings and on the floor in their own beds which you wash regularly. Don't allow them upstairs and have hard floors downstairs - a Roomba and an auto mop.

Train them to wait to wipe feet before coming in house and also have a dog shower outside if possible.

Obviously you then lose doggy cuddles on the sofa...but your house won't smell (as much).

PuddlesPityParty · 13/09/2023 12:29

Get a spot wash.

Womencanlift · 13/09/2023 12:33

Houses with a dog smell, of course they do and people are deluded if they don’t think that’s true

One of the many reasons why I would never have one and don’t allow them in my home
