To think whatever I do, getting a dog will make my house stink?

We fancy getting a dog next year. I'm just slightly concerned that the house will smell like a dog lives there regardless of the amount of hoovering and cleaning I do.

Are there any breeds that don't shed as much?

In my job I have to visit a lot of homes. All the houses that have a dog smell- even the most clean and tidy. It can be minimal I think dependent on the dog. My sister's short haired dog is washed every few weeks and the smell is minimal. My friend has a labradoodle and bless him, it stinks to high heaven. She doesn't wash him often and allows him to go in every area of the house, including her bed 😩it is really unpleasant.

People who think because they do the housework , it won't smell. It most definitely does. Always. Same with cats. No matter the breed. You will just go nose blind whilst everyone that visits suffers the smell. Theres no getting away from that unfortunately.

Cats only smell because of the litter tray and if cleaned out regularly doesn't smell.

ASCCM · 13/09/2023 12:39

I’ve never been into a house with a dog that doesn’t smell of dog. Even the really really clean and tidy ones. Dogs smell, they make houses smell. No amount of febreeze helps and also the worst part?? You’ll get used to the smell and think it doesn’t smell. But it will.

Crayfishforyou · 13/09/2023 12:40

My dog only doesn’t smell of dog after rolling in fox poop. 🤢
I don’t care if my house smells doggy, I can’t smell it. If other people don’t like it they don’t have to come in.

I've never lived with a dog an no, not all dog houses smell of dog. I don't know why people say this... just to make others feel bad?

At last a sensible post.

NOT ALL DOGS SMELL. Why do so many people absolutely insist they do? Have all the posters who know for certain that all dogs smell actually been in contact with every single breed of dog? Have they been to houses with all the different breeds?

I have many many friends with dogs and some of their houses do smell of dog but lots don't. The ones that don't have greyhounds, whippets, salukis and afghan hounds. I am talking about more than 1 house with each of those breeds.

Pretty sure there are other breeds that don't smell as well. I think poodles are one.

I have dogs and, to be honest, don't care if my house smells of them but am certain it doesn't. My MIL, when she was alive, was a nasty woman who absolutely loved to criticise me and DH. When we had cats she would tell us just about every time she visited that she could smell them. When we no longer had cats she commented quite a few times that she was surprised she could not smell our dogs.

NO, not all dogs smell. Unless you have been in a house with every single dog breed in the world you are talking rubbish

FoodFann · 13/09/2023 12:44

Shedding is one thing…

Then there’s muddy/pooey paws (even when they don’t look muddy).
Saliva.
Stinking slobbery dogs toys.
Reeking dog treats.
Foul smelling dog food.
Ruined clothing.
Dog sick is disgusting.
My dog has been slightly incontinent since she was 2yo, so little drips of wee here and there!
Here’s my rug after being in the bath for 1 minute… bear in mind, I hoover every day.
Muddy paws every time she comes in the house in bad weather (so 75% of the year).
Oh, and dogs love rolling in stinky stuff, I see other owners at the park not bat an eyelid when their dog is rolling in actual shit. So I can only imagine their houses smell so horrendous they can’t tell!

She’s a shorthair pointer. I love her, and could never get rid of her, but if I could go back, I wouldn’t get her again.

To think whatever I do, getting a dog will make my house stink?
ArcaneWireless · 13/09/2023 12:47

The dog I walk smells of outdoors and is on and out of water all the time. I don’t think I’ve ever smelled the wet dog smell thanks to the dog robe. (Ruff and tumble - highly recommended!)

However, I’d have a wee bit of dog smell all day long rather than do without the joy a dog brings to the house.

ididntwanttodoit · 13/09/2023 12:48

All dogs smell, no matter how clean your house, or how clean the dog. Many dog owners are in complete denial about this, but it's usually because they have got used to the smell. Some non-shedding breeds smell less than other dogs - think of Poodles, Bichons, Lhasas. Retrievers are usually the smelliest because of the lanolin in their skin - labradors, spaniels, Newfoundlands. Hard floors and a blanket on the chair/sofa will help a lot, but at the end of the day you can't avoid the smell completely.

ididntwanttodoit · 13/09/2023 12:48

Cats don't smell unless you let them pee indoors.

They do though… they smell of cat. Just like humans smell of human. Everything has a smell!

Another idiot post. Have you been to a house with every dog breed in the world?

Not all dogs smell. It depends on the type of fur. As I said in my post, my MIL would definitely have told us if our house smelt of dog. She loved telling us it smelled when we had cats so I know for absolutely certain it did not smell of dog

twinmum2022 · 13/09/2023 11:09

I've never been in a house with a dog that doesn't smell of dog.

I think people who live with the dog don't notice it, it's not always horrendous but I always smell it.

I wouldn't let that be the factor that puts you off a dog though, if you're ready get one 😊

I agree 100%

Iamanisland · 13/09/2023 12:56

@twinmum2022 is spot on.

Shadowchaser · 13/09/2023 13:01

I have two big dogs and I don’t think they smell until I’ve been away and walk back in!

I think dog owners go nose blind but it’s 100% worth it

WaltzingWaters · 13/09/2023 13:02

We have a cockapoo. No shedding and no smell unless she’s wet. (I do hate the wet dog smell). Maybe it’s that we’re used to it now, but my partner already had her when we got together and I don’t remember ever thinking his place smelt of dog when we started dating. And I’m quite a clean freak.

Toomanycaketins · 13/09/2023 13:08

Keep your dog (and their teeth) clean
wash their beds/blankets often
keep them off sofas/beds
crate train them for night times.

I can’t say this will completely eliminate all smell, but we do this and people who have been to our house have said that they didn’t realise we had a dog (terrier). I am very sensitive to dog smell in other people’s houses, and I can detect stinky football boots in the house at 20 paces, so I hope I’m not nose blind.

whynotwhatknot · 13/09/2023 13:16

i used to th8ink that till my df got a dogdont know if tos because of the breed but it never smells

Prescottdanni123 · 13/09/2023 13:17

You won't notice it. Just use plenty of air freshener/pet odour sprays when you have guests coming around.

Helenahandkart · 13/09/2023 13:19

Your house will definitely smell of dog. Every house with a dog in it smells of dog, regardless of how many chemicals you spray to disguise it, or how often you clean. Dogs smell, even if the house they live in is clean.
Your polite friends will tell you it doesn’t smell. Your friends who like the smell of dog will either not notice, or enjoy the smell. Your friends who dislike the smell or who have a heightened sense of smell will find your house unpleasant to be in and won’t want to visit as much.
But it definitely will smell.

PrrrplePineapple · 13/09/2023 13:21

I have two (both shedders) and my house does not smell of dog. I know because I ask visitors who come round and they all assure me all they can smell are the reed diffusers.

I do air the house frequently, windows & doors are open every day (weather permitting), dog beds & blankets on the sofa are washed weekly, and I have a robovac that hoovers daily to stay on top of the dog hair.

Some breeds are stinkier than others, my two are mixed breeds and don't really smell (and get bathed when they do start to smell or if they rolled in something gross) but if you don't have a smelly dog and keep on top of cleaning, there is zero reason your house should smell of dog. I am sure others will be along to assure me my house must stink of dog in reality, but it doesn't. My mother would tell me immediately if that were the case!

Royanne · 13/09/2023 13:22

Funny how it's non dog owners saying that all dog houses smell and it's those who have dogs insisting that they don't 🤣

YOU'VE GONE NOSEBLIND

yogasaurus · 13/09/2023 13:23

Wooden floors, no dogs on sofas or upstairs, doors and windows open all day, every day. Hoover every day, wash floors 1/2 times a week.

Bath the dog also, and wash pet bedding once a week.

Helenahandkart · 13/09/2023 13:23

I have never been into a dog house without being able to smell it. Some are worse than others, but the smell of dog is always there.
Personally I find it repulsive.

Cowlover89 · 13/09/2023 12:37

Cats only smell because of the litter tray and if cleaned out regularly doesn't smell.

If I sniff my cat's head, he smells of cat. That isn't litter tray, it's pure cat.
