To tell you not to bring your dog out in the extreme heat

It's over 30c during the day here, and yet people are still taking their dogs out during the midday heat. This includes brachycephalic dogs, like French Bulldogs and pugs, who are particularly vulnerable. I know a vet nurse, who has seen dogs die recently of heat stroke. Yet people still take them out.

People know they just don't care

whathappenedtosummer23 · 07/09/2023 20:29

Totally agree. My dog hasn’t had a walk today. I am not very pleased about it but it’s too hot for him and I won’t risk his health. Just set my alarm to take him out super early tomorrow morning before it gets hot

MrsBinx · 07/09/2023 20:31

YANBU I saw so many people walking their dogs today at 3.30pm this afternoon, 30 degrees in London. I really worry about their paw pads. I walk mine in the early morning and late evening when it’s cooler.

GreeboIsMySpiritAnimal · 07/09/2023 20:32

Surely it depends where you're walking them? I've been walking mine in shady woods with streams for him to paddle in, and he's seemed very happy.

Missingmyusername · 07/09/2023 20:38

Anyone with an ounce of intelligence wouldn’t walk their dog in this heat.

Yet 17% have voted YABU…. 🙄

Is it hot in the woodland? If it's not, then the point doesn't apply.

I always wonder who they are who go against the grain with something so obvious. I imagine shift workers etc.

Thisismeyeah · 07/09/2023 20:50

I often wonder this while its very warm and I haven't walked out dog, he is a foreign dog bread with a single coat and his native country is hotter than the UK. Surely the dogs are walked there?

Floralnomad · 07/09/2023 20:52

We are in the SE and I’ve been saying this all week . Idiots .

BeyondMyWits · 07/09/2023 20:54

Had to walk our dog home (15 min) from a blood test at the vet at 11.30. Was hot, took the shadiest route and plenty of water. Felt guilty, but no car. Not all walking dogs are "on a walk"

Sheisready · 07/09/2023 20:57

Why would you be unreasonable to “tell” us this? The majority of people reading won’t have a dog, the next proportion will agree with such an obvious statement and the minority who wish to walk their dog in hot weather won’t care what you think.

GreeboIsMySpiritAnimal · 07/09/2023 21:05

"Is it hot in the woodland? If it's not, then the point doesn't apply."

Well I'm in the SE so it's hot generally. But we drive to the woods in an air-conditioned chair, and pootle about in streams and the undergrowth.

Regholdsworthswaterbed · 07/09/2023 21:07

YANBU but genuine question, what do dog owners in hot countries do?

Dogs acclimatise. The summer in the UK is too short and the temperature differences too great for lots of breeds to really acclimatise to the warmth

annahay · 07/09/2023 21:21

I've just taken my dog out now it's gotten dark. I've been bitten to death but she was nice and cool.

It's not about 'what I think', it's about evidence regarding what is safe. Many must be walking dogs in the heat out of ignorance about the dangers of heat stroke to dogs.

Went swimming on Tuesday night and so nice to see people bring their dogs then
Was about 6.30pm and they were having the best time in and out the reservoir with us!
I don't want to walk in the heat so I wouldn't take a dog. Have been known when I dog sit to walk the husky at 4am when it's coolest for her

I'm hot countries they don't seem to have as many dogs.

It depends on the breed but I wouldn’t take my young, fit and healthy dog out in high temps even in shade. It’s just too bloody hot. We are walking super late but I am actually enjoying the cool air, so works for both of us.

VeryGoodVeryNice · 07/09/2023 21:46

People are thick. I waited until about an hour ago and took my pup for a gentle sniffy stroll just to stretch her legs. Still warm out there but not dangerously hot in the dark.

WhatsTheWorstThatCldHappen · 07/09/2023 21:49

Yep. I'm taking mine out at 7am. Was a lovely 17 degrees this morning!

PurpleMonkeys · 07/09/2023 21:51

I take mine out at 7.00 / 8.00 am and that's ll he gets when it's hot like this.

Anyone walking their dogs in excessive heat should be made to do so in bare feet, see how they enjoy it.

ActDottie · 07/09/2023 22:10

People are idiots! We’ve been doing 8pm walks the last few days

weebarra · 07/09/2023 22:14

I'm lucky that I'm in Scotland and it hasn't been so hot, but definitely waiting till later to walk.

1984Winston · 07/09/2023 22:20

People are complete idiots, I've seen dogs die on days much cooler than these (im an ex vet nurse) there's just no need!
