To tell you not to bring your dog out in the extreme heat

It's over 30c during the day here, and yet people are still taking their dogs out during the midday heat. This includes brachycephalic dogs, like French Bulldogs and pugs, who are particularly vulnerable. I know a vet nurse, who has seen dogs die recently of heat stroke. Yet people still take them out.

I agree with OP about today. But I do feel uncomfortable reading posters labelling other dog owners as thick. Over 30 i think it is fairly clear cut as dogs in the uk aren't used to that heat, so don't take the dog for an hour long walk.

It's the judgemental tone that i don't like.

Some dog owners know that their dogs can cope with. Others have to take them out - a dog desperate for a poo can't wait until the Sun goes down. Also others need to take to the vet or whatever - sometimes it's not possible to re-book.

Or may be i just hate these one-size-fits-all self-righteous attitudes about dogs.

Or maybe i am still defensive about the time I got told off for walking the dog at 9 am on an warm day here (northen europe) - 20 degrees!

ginderella85 · 09/09/2023 13:26

Took ours out aircon car and straight in the woods at 8 this morning so he could play in the stream! But that will be it for today felt bad he had been cooped up all week so thought a play in the cold stream would be right up his street!

I was on holiday in Italy and was walking around Rome saw loads of tourists walking dogs. In 35 degree mid day heat. The dogs were really suffering….as was I. City heat in August is horrible.

& yet only yesterday in my local supermarket car park a car window had to be smashed to get 2 dogs out who would probably have died otherwise.

perhaps they dont read facebook or mumsnet?

I don't think it's so much about telling people who already know it, it's about keeping it in the general thoughts of the public, reminding people that it's unacceptable to keep dogs in hot cars so that even if the owner themselves can't be stopped they hopefully become aware that it's not accepted anymore

Willmafrockfit · 09/09/2023 13:55

but everyone who reads mumsnet/facebook knows
they darent go out in the car with their dog almost without fear of some vigilant - or is it just me

Willmafrockfit · 09/09/2023 13:57

i saw dogs on the beach in my lunch break both weds and thursday this week
shocking i agree
i imagine their owners had their reasons and excuses

Willmafrockfit · 09/09/2023 13:57

Peehaps they're incredibly stupid or just don't care about their dogs?

What I want to know is: What do people do if they take their dog on holiday with them and the temperature goes over [whatever temperature they deem unacceptable for a dog, which it may well do so given that people often take holidays in summer]?

Most hotels and holiday rental places which allow dogs say that dogs cannot be left alone in case they bark/rip the place up, which might well happen when a dog is in a new place.

So what do owners do - just stay in the room/house the whole time?

Ponoka7 · 09/09/2023 16:11

We've had four serious dog attacks over the last four days. All between 2-4pm. All breeds that don't do well in heat and all in town centers/urban streets. If you can't care for all your dog's needs, you shouldn't have one. Excuses about bad pet ownership in this country need to stop. All of the dogs have been destroyed, none should have been were they were.

A lot of owners ignore the rules, if you've got a well behaved dog, I suppose you would. People also take their crate. My DD takes a fan, her partner would stay in with the dog.
As for dogs in hot countries, they've developed tolerance, the street dogs in India/Africa. But they will find shade and sleep during the hottest part of the day. The people who are buying other breeds usually have air conditioning. It's only been an issue for a few years.

I’d start by reading the thread where this has been answered several times already

No dog ever died of boredom. We have a boxer. She hasn’t been walked for a week. Yes she is bored. Has the zoomies first thing in the morning. There’s not a lot of shade in our garden. Has to be bribed with food to come in. Then flops in front of the fan.

looking forward to Tuesday when the weather breaks.

Willmafrockfit · 09/09/2023 17:11

i have walked my dog 7.30 in the evening, can't your boxer go out then? out of interest @fortifiedwithtea

camperjam · 09/09/2023 17:17

I'm at a festival this weekend in 30° heat and there are loads of dogs out in it. Even huskies and a St Bernard at midday. As well as braccy dogs panting all over the place.
It's so stupid.

Actually, I know my dogs. I know how they react to heat. They are young and very fit with proper noses. I was training them in breezy shade at 28C the other day and they were fine. They had water when they got back to the car, came home and spent most of the afternoon in the conservatory.

Yes, some people are idiots. Yes, some dogs (variants on fat, old, unfit, brachy) shouldn't be out when it's very hot. But 25 mins of talking it in turns to wait in a down while the other one does heelwork and short retrieves for two young, slim healthy dogs... not an issue.
