To ask if you know your exact place of birth?

Not the City but the name and address of the hospital (assuming, of course, you were born in hospital).

I ask because I am filling in a form which asks just this. Now I was born nearly 60 years ago in a non-UK but European city (I am British). I do know the hospital was knocked down about 50 years ago but as Mum is no longer with us and my Dad is very confused, I don't have a clue which one. Google tells me that there was a mass building post-war clearance in the 1970s but, oddly enough, not a list of all the hospitals (sarcasm). I was registered at the British Consulate which just lists the city name as place of birth.

The form which asks for it, is an important document I need for a new job (bit like a dbs) but apparently this piece of information is vital! The office I spoke to is checking with a higher authority but in case I need to argue my case, I just wondered if this is a piece of information that everybody else is aware of.

Yes, but I still live in the town I was born in. It's been knocked down and used for several things since, but I know where and what it was.

Beangrove · 07/09/2023 17:34

I know which hospital it was and could find the address if I needed to, as helpfully it is still there! I don't think it's on my birth certificate or anything though, so not sure how I would find it if it wasn't.

Mirandawrongs · 07/09/2023 17:35

Yes but I was born at home.
I have a full address on my birth certificate

Mischance · 07/09/2023 17:35

I was born on the sofa in my grandparents' house.

eurochick · 07/09/2023 17:36

I know the town and hospital but it has long since closed. I could probably dig up a street name if I had to.

justanothernamechangemonday · 07/09/2023 17:37

Would it be on your medical records?

gamerchick · 07/09/2023 17:37

Is it not on your birth certificate?

PuttingDownRoots · 07/09/2023 17:38

Yes but I lived near for 18 years!

My DDs consulate birth certificate lists the address of the hospital she was born in. (Her sisters UK one is more vague)

SocksAndTheCity · 07/09/2023 17:38

Yes I do, but it hasn't been a hospital for years and is now fancy apartments.

TenOhSeven · 07/09/2023 17:39

Yes, I know the name of the hospital I was born in, even though we moved away from that area before I started school.

StillWantingADog · 07/09/2023 17:39

if your birth certificate doesn't know I'm not sure how you would find out.
Assume no other family members you can ask? If you have to put something on the form I'd jus put the city as it is on your BC. Or if that is not enough the British Consulate as that is where you were registered.

StillWantingADog · 07/09/2023 17:40

and to answer your question yes definitely I know the name of the hospital even though its no longer there. I'm 45

Marsyas · 07/09/2023 17:40

Yes, my mum and dad were also born there, as was my sister and all her children. It’s not there now though.

Toffeesgirl · 07/09/2023 17:41

justanothernamechangemonday · 07/09/2023 17:37

Would it be on your medical records?

I don't have any medical records (other than vaccination certificates) which pre-date us coming to live in the UK. Would someone born here still have their records from the mid-1960s?

I have never, ever needed this piece of information before.

I live in the town I was born in and the hospital I was born in is still very much in use so the address would not be an issue. My older siblings were born in the local maternity hospital which closed down in the mid - 80s when the new hospital opened (I was the first of my siblings to be born there) and it has since been bulldozed and redeveloped into a few different things but we'd still be able to provide a basic address of "X town Maternity Hospital, Local Street, my Town"

Stroopwaffels · 07/09/2023 17:41

The name of the hospital yes. It's now flats. Wouldn't know what the exact address is, or postcode or anything.

Lydiala · 07/09/2023 17:41

Can you just pick one of the old hospitals and say it’s that one? If you can’t work out for sure which one it is, it’s not like anyone else can either to confirm.

Tlolljs · 07/09/2023 17:42

I’ve just googled and mine used to be a workhouse!
Before my time closed now new hospital built on the site.

MariaVT65 · 07/09/2023 17:42

Yes I know which hospital I was born in, but in all fairness that’s because I’m on only 35 and the hospital still exists, and in fact is making headline news today for criminal investigations in the maternity services!

But i completely think it’s fair enough you don’t know the hospital in your circumstances.

I do sometimes consider the situation on my CV where I previously worked in shops that no longer exist. How am i supposed to prove I worked there?

Thedogscollar · 07/09/2023 17:42

Yes I know mine but it's now been knocked down and new houses built on the site.
My husband was born in Singapore as father was in the Navy. On his birth certificate it states name of hospital and he also has another BC that has the name of the nurse that attended at the birth!

saltinesandcoffeecups · 07/09/2023 17:43

I do but my mum didn’t she was born at home very rural in the US and the house didn’t have an address. She could narrow it down to a county or a holler.

Edited

I did think that, but they seem to think it's so important that if they came back and asked me to prove it, I wouldn't want to admit I'd lied!

You could try checking the Wikipedia entry of the city, but switch to the language spoken there. They often have lots of random lists.

PaperwhiteTheGhost · 07/09/2023 17:43

I do, but I only know the address as I subsequently ended up working in the same hospital.

Do you know anyone in the town you were born who might know the name of the hospital?

CaptainMyCaptain · 07/09/2023 17:43

I was born nearly 69 years ago in another country but I know the name of the hospital. It no longer exists.
