To ask if you know your exact place of birth?

Not the City but the name and address of the hospital (assuming, of course, you were born in hospital).

I ask because I am filling in a form which asks just this. Now I was born nearly 60 years ago in a non-UK but European city (I am British). I do know the hospital was knocked down about 50 years ago but as Mum is no longer with us and my Dad is very confused, I don't have a clue which one. Google tells me that there was a mass building post-war clearance in the 1970s but, oddly enough, not a list of all the hospitals (sarcasm). I was registered at the British Consulate which just lists the city name as place of birth.

The form which asks for it, is an important document I need for a new job (bit like a dbs) but apparently this piece of information is vital! The office I spoke to is checking with a higher authority but in case I need to argue my case, I just wondered if this is a piece of information that everybody else is aware of.

I was born at home, so yes. And my full birth certificate gives the address though the short one doesn't.

Son's and husband's certificates both give the name of the hospital (assume other son's does too but he appears to have taken it away with him).

Do you have the full certificate or just the short one?

Well common sense has prevailed(ish)

Someone on high has been in touch to say that if I really don't know the details of the hospital, then I can just put 'Hospital' and name of city.

They weren't however, able to tell me why they need that information as it is 'confidential'.

Yes, I do. I had my children in the same hospital.

Unless they are trying to track down geneticly modified babies or foundling royals 🤷🏼
I guess that confidential is a code for We have no idea who stuck that question in there but have sent out a global email to find out if anybody ever used the answers for anything

Is this about establishing your nationality beyond question? If you were born outside the UK? Are both of your parents British?

I doubt it, both parents British (born in England) and I've a British passport.

I can't see there's any reason to ask and judging by this thread, most people know the name of the hospital and so maybe no-one has ever questioned it before.
