Fed up with hairdressers

I mean generally. The biggest thing that pisses me off is I find their pricing really opaque. One near me was advertising 40% off all colour on August, except obviously once you get down to it you realise loads of T&Cs apply.

Pricing systems often totally lack transparency too: you'll be given a rough quote but it's always different at the till because of some bullshit factor like "oh we added a glossing treatment" or "the blow dry was done by a senior stylist".

They often upsell without you realising: at the sink, "oh your ends need a good soak they're very dry. I'm just going to pop on this moisture seal very quickly, is that alright?". Whoops, turns out that was a £20 treatment. It would be great if they were taught to have a bit of honesty in their practices, aka "thus treatment would be great for your hair, it is an extra 20 quid though. Is that okay?".

They chop shit loads off your hair when you go for a trim.

It's 2023 and we're exploring space, but they haven't managed to figure out a sink system that doesn't make you feel like your neck is about to snap. Like thanks for the massaging chair but my head is in agony

So fed up with them!

Good ones are like gold dust. By good, I mean just simply doing what you ask for. Not being scissor happy and being transparent. A rare find.

KateyCuckoo · 02/09/2023 14:54

Mine packs people in too close together, time wise. I get she wants to maximise profit but I'm often sat around for an hour waiting for the colour to be washed out.

ConnieTucker · 02/09/2023 14:59

I went to one once and after the initial chat and chopping off a chunk of hair at the bottom, they then offered me a quote. In those three minutes while they worked it out I imagined the price of a small car. So by the time they came back with £130 i was relieved.

i have never before or since been offered a quote for a hair cut.

Finlesswonder · 02/09/2023 14:59

Sorry I think I'm just really sore because I wanted to make use of that 40% off colour deal. So I booked the appointment, had the colour done, I read the T&Cs which said you had to have a full (or whatever term) blow-dry done to get the deal. OK, great.
The guy doing my hair took ages and was non stop blathering on about his personal life. He asks me how I want my hair dried and I said "oh nothing complicated" and he said "just a bit of movement" and I said yeah. I get to the till and discover the 40% off doesn't apply because I had the "baby blowdry" or whatever bullshit term they used. What the hell!!!!!

SisterMichaelsHabit · 02/09/2023 15:01

Can you actually complain and when you get nowhere refer it up to trading standards or the ASA as they advertised a service then didn't provide it?
I mean hairdressers are usually a dismal experience at the best of times but this is daylight robbery!

otherwayup · 02/09/2023 15:08

I cut my own hair now, I got so fed up of shit, overpriced haircuts that I no longer go to the hairdressers.
I now spend money on beauty salon treatments, far more relaxing and better results!

That's bullshit. I wouldn't have paid the full price.

AlaskaThunderfuckHiiiiiiiii · 02/09/2023 15:30

I think I’m very lucky with my hairdresser, he’s worth his weight in gold, transparent prices, asks before doing anything, does it exactly how I want it and I’m him only
client in my booked slot been going to him for two years now, yes it’s a little more expensive but I don’t smoke, rarely drink and only need to seem him 3 times a year now compared to every 6-8 weeks like my old stylist because of how he does my hair and it’s highlighted

teenysaladandsniffofarose · 02/09/2023 15:32

This has made me really appreciate my hairdresser!

Always does exactly as I ask and completely transparent with pricing. It's fairly expensive, cost me £50 for a cut and blow dry but I'm happy to pay it because she does such a good job.

Try a new hairdresser?

I have stopped going as well. It is extremely freeing to not spend literally thousands on my hair so I can fit the mold created by the patriarchy. No thank you. I’ll buy a first class ticket to Hawaii with the money I’m saving and have an adventure instead of a fried blonde head. Let it go, ladies! Let it gooooooo!

I don't think the patriarchy cares about your hair....

Funkyslippers · 02/09/2023 15:35

My hairdresser is amazing and very reasonably priced. I really look forward to going because not only does she do a great job she's also lovely and we have a great chat. She's the only hairdresser I've ever felt any loyalty towards. She charges £75 for t section highlights, all over colour plus cut & blow dry. I was quoted £100 for the same at another local place

Scaryghost · 02/09/2023 15:36

I have an amazing hairdresser. Cut colour and t-foils with fringe and straightening, £45. Get mine done very 3 months and wouldn’t go anywhere else.

SleeplessinSeattle53 · 02/09/2023 15:39

I had to stop going to one hairdresser as she had

Precipice · 02/09/2023 15:39

YANBU, that sounds ridiculous. I go to a barber's with my short hair, and at most barber's, there's a simple list visible from the street giving set prices. Probably if you have something different than the listed options, which are few, you'll be paying a different rate. If it's possible for most barbers, it's possible for most hairdressers. I have seen such lists sometimes at hairdressers, so it's also possible there, even if the typical one might list more options/prices.

Oops posted too soon. She had verbal diahorrea. Literally every thought that crossed her mind came out of her mouth. Did my head in.

PLEASE. Shave your head and tell me how men react. Daft.

Danikm151 · 02/09/2023 15:48

I rarely go to the hairdressers because the costs have gone up so much. When I do go (like once a year) I do a groupon/wowcher that way they’ve already had my money so can’t charge me more.

TheAloe · 02/09/2023 16:22

@AlaskaThunderfuckHiiiiiiiii

Call me sexist but male hairdressers are generally a lot more talented.

Been there, done that, cant say there was any reaction from any man.
Although, why would I care how some random men react to my hair or lack thereof?!

Exactly.
@MichaelAndersen I have, for religious reasons. So did my mother.
Nobody cared. Even if they did why would it bother me?
Carry on kidding yourself that you get lots of attention...

Btw OP YANBU. Since my go-to stylist closed I'm yet to find a replacement... I miss you Franco!

Nonsense!

You had your hair done how you wanted/asked for, not to fit any patriarchal moulds. Whatever they may be

Who cares? And I'm fairly sure women would react too

Crispyperifries · 02/09/2023 18:42

Stopped going to the hairdressers in 2015 as was so fed up of not getting exactly what I had asked for and the prices I couldn’t justify. I trim it regularly or a relative does and it’s never looked healthier. Not looked back once.
