If you don't drink what do you do in the evenings on holidays?

This is a genuine question. We don't do resort holidays so no all inclusive hotels or hotels with evening entertainment.

Most of our holidays are in cities - places like France / Italy.

By day we explore, sightsee etc & in the evenings we love to go for a glass of wine or aperitif, then dinner with wine. Sometimes beer for dh.

After dinner we stroll & find a nice looking place & then we sit & chat & watch the world go by with another glass of wine or two. It's my favourite way to spend an evening.

If you don't drink do you bother going on after dinner or do you go back to the hotel/ apartment?

We have the odd night when we're tired & might not stay out long after dinner but we're active & generally cover a lot of ground during the day.

Why could t you sit and enjoy any other drink? Or an ice cream? Why would not having alcohol mean you wanted to just stay inside?!?!

what a weird question… people who don’t drink alcohol do the things other people do- just not the stupid things probably!

LubaLuca · 01/09/2023 21:06

The same but with soft drinks.

I do drink, but I've been on holiday with people who don't. They don't go to bed because they don't want alcohol.

Kaiken · 01/09/2023 21:06

You can still sit in a bar and not drink alcohol and do the same things. I like grapefruit juice or a mocktail.

VestaTilley · 01/09/2023 21:06

Now with having DS we go out for dinner then all go back to bed, exhausted from a day of sightseeing!

Years ago we might’ve done a concert, opera or sitting sipping a drink on a nice square watching the world go by, but we’ve never been a couple to go out going from bar to bar. Even when younger I’d always be knackered - our days on holiday are full on seeing sites, ruins etc. Far too tired for going Out Out 😂

zurala · 01/09/2023 21:07

We go self catering so we go back to the villa and drink tea by the pool. Same as at home, but without the pool there.
We do drink sometimes but very rarely.

See I don’t like ice cream, or soft drinks, so I struggle to see the attraction of either of those really. A nice glass of wine or beer and watching the world go by is perfect. If non alcoholic versions tasted the same, I’d happily swap, but they really don’t!

OrigamiOwls · 01/09/2023 21:07

Er...the same as you do but without alcohol?

thdskdrggs · 01/09/2023 21:08

We've decided to go sober for September and I'm wondering how to get through a Friday night, never mind a holiday 😂

Butchyrestingface · 01/09/2023 21:09

Are you saying that the places you go on holiday only sell alcoholic beverages, @ParisDispatches?

Where on earth is this place?

WinterFireJanuaryEmbers · 01/09/2023 21:09

I go to bed - genuinely. But my holidays are all based around hiking these days. So after a long day in the fresh air, I am mostly looking to curl up and relax before an early night ready for the next day.

TeenLifeMum · 01/09/2023 21:09

We chat over soft drinks. Not sure why that’s confusing. Sometimes, at home, we have a cup of tea or hot chocolate. On holiday, ice and a soft drink and maybe an ice cream.

mynameiscalypso · 01/09/2023 21:10

We read. Occasionally play cards or something. But mainly sit in blissful silence and get on with our books.

VeridicalVagabond · 01/09/2023 21:10

I wasn't drinking on our last holiday and basically did the same as you but without alcohol? Virgin cocktails, soft drinks, whatever.

Still had a lovely time. People who don't drink aren't boring joy vampires who go to bed at 9pm because there's simply nothing to do after then you know 😂 and I say that as someone who ordinarily loves a good drink.

Stripeypyjamas · 01/09/2023 21:11

Well our DC wake up at 5am. If the time zone is different this can be pretty gruesome so by 9pm I'm done. We would go out for a meal, put DC to bed and have a cup of tea and a biscuit and then I'll drop.

shivawn · 01/09/2023 21:11

I don't really get the point of the question. I do drink but I wouldn't be at a loss of things to do and going home to my hotel if I didn't.

Maireas · 01/09/2023 21:12

We go out for evening strolls and have a coffee or a sparkling water. We don't drink alcohol and it hasn't impeded enjoyment of a holiday yet!

ShinyAppleDreamingOfTheSea · 01/09/2023 21:12

After we've been out for dinner and had a little wander around, maybe had one drink DH and I tend to go back to our villa / apartment where he will have another drink and watch TV or a film on his laptop and I will have a cup of tea and read my book . Or we may listen to some music . If we are staying somewhere where we have a view - either scenic or of where something is going on then I may just sit and watch .

TooOldForThisNonsense · 01/09/2023 21:12

If we are self catering we will relax in the accommodation

on our cruise this year we sat in the bar and I had a soft drink, went to the theatre/to see a band/cinema

Agreed. If I didn’t drink I’d do exactly the same as I would if I did, but ingesting non-alcoholic liquids.

CPLawyer · 01/09/2023 21:14

We don't drink but usually try to find a nice bar with live music or go in a dessert crawl for sweet treats and ice cream.

KajsaKavat · 01/09/2023 21:14

Ice cream, shaved ice, coffee, or just walk around and look at things.

There are lots of nice AF beers :)

aintnothinbutagstring · 01/09/2023 21:16

Sit around and chat with family, go for a twilight stroll, read a book, play games, eat, anything you'd normally do but without the alcohol. Think its a british thing to sit around drinking all evening on holiday - if you're in europe, people are often smoking, drinking coffee and chatting after dinner, not drinking themselves stupid.

xyz111 · 01/09/2023 21:16

Just because people don't drink, doesn't mean we're boring 🤣. We do exactly the same, we're not a different species.

aintnothinbutagstring · 01/09/2023 21:18

And yeah - non drinkers don't consume as much liquids as drinker, you don't get that dopamine hit from 5 pints of diet coke 😄
