If you don't drink what do you do in the evenings on holidays?

This is a genuine question. We don't do resort holidays so no all inclusive hotels or hotels with evening entertainment.

Most of our holidays are in cities - places like France / Italy.

By day we explore, sightsee etc & in the evenings we love to go for a glass of wine or aperitif, then dinner with wine. Sometimes beer for dh.

After dinner we stroll & find a nice looking place & then we sit & chat & watch the world go by with another glass of wine or two. It's my favourite way to spend an evening.

If you don't drink do you bother going on after dinner or do you go back to the hotel/ apartment?

We have the odd night when we're tired & might not stay out long after dinner but we're active & generally cover a lot of ground during the day.

There are lots of nice AF beers :)

No. There aren’t, and trust me I’ve tried them all. Corona 0% is the best and it’s okay, but no substitute for the real deal. Wine is the same, and any cocktails that aren’t either basically fruit juice or desserts. The alcohol just makes it taste better I guess

Why could t you sit and enjoy any other drink? Or an ice cream? Why would not having alcohol mean you wanted to just stay inside?!?!

what a weird question… people who don’t drink alcohol do the things other people do- just not the stupid things probably!

Exactly.

I always find questions around drinking like this as odd as if alcohol is the only thing served in the evenings and there is nothing much to do unless alcohol is involved.

Floralnomad · 01/09/2023 21:20

We do the same as you but without alcohol , I find it a bit odd that you think that you need alcohol to watch the world go by .

WhateverMate · 01/09/2023 21:20

We do exactly the same as what the drinkers do, but without alcohol.

See I don’t like ice cream, or soft drinks, so I struggle to see the attraction of either of those really. A nice glass of wine or beer and watching the world go by is perfect. If non alcoholic versions tasted the same, I’d happily swap, but they really don’t!

Same here. I'm not a big drinker but on holiday I like to find a bar with live music and have a couple of beers. I don't like any soft drinks, I suppose I could order tea but it's not the same. Plus I need cake with tea.
I'm on holiday next week and not drinking at the moment so not sure what I'll do in the evenings.

Toughsteak · 01/09/2023 21:22

I think it is an odd question which says a lot about your relationship with alcohol

givemeasunnyday · 01/09/2023 21:22

Surely you could do the same thing over coffee or a glass of juice?

bryceQ · 01/09/2023 21:23

I'd probably want to go to bed to be with DH to be honest! We would walk on beach then retire to do other things!

Mushroo · 01/09/2023 21:23

I agree with this OP.

Im currently pregnant and I can stay out after dinner for a soft drink / ice cream but I’m bored / sugared out after 1 or 2 so invariably end up back in the room by about 10pm.

I really miss staying up until midnight having a few glasses of wine or cocktails!

I did have a great nice recently though at a bar that had an amazing singer playing the piano. Stayed out until 2am completely sober as it was genuinely very entertaining, so maybe try and find some (good!) live music?

Proudgypsy · 01/09/2023 21:24

How sad that some people are so reliant on alcohol that they can't imagine how anyone could enjoy themselves without it.

If that's you then I'd be revisiting your relationship with alcohol.

Thepeopleversuswork · 01/09/2023 21:26

I mean I drink and would happily have an after dinner drink but would be just as happy sitting somewhere nice with a soft drink. Or reading or walking or watching a film.

Nicole1111 · 01/09/2023 21:27

We have to rush straight back after dinner because legend has it that if us non drinkers are on holiday and we try to stay up after dinner we’ll immediately be turned in to stone.

HauntedPencil · 01/09/2023 21:27

Exactly the same just with a different drink!

LegendsBeyond · 01/09/2023 21:28

It’s a bit worrying that you can’t think of how to spend time without drinking alcohol. People really shouldn’t be basing their evenings around drinking booze. I find it strange.

You realise that people who don't drink alcohol do drink other things?

ManchesterLu · 01/09/2023 21:35

Exactly the same as what you do, but my drink has no alcohol content. I don't understand why so many people think alcohol is the be all and end all of everything.

JamSandle · 01/09/2023 21:36

If I can be I'm usually in the pool or sea til late as I love the water/snorkelling/diving.

I'll go out to eat/bars but just not drink (or not always).

I imagine at least some of those people are alcohol dependent.

Me too. I mean...you do the same/most of the same things but without the alcohol.

I disagree I think lots of the beers are lovely. I don’t drink any more and so have tried lots of them. The wines are rank admittedly

Exactly this! What an odd question op!

I don't usually drink, dh does. Should he maybe sit alone and send me home as I'm not drinking alcohol?

Comedycook · 01/09/2023 21:39

You can still go to bars, restaurants and walks... seriously your imagination can't stretch this far? You can even chat to each other without an alcoholic drink.

JustKen · 01/09/2023 21:43

Drink non-alcoholic drinks. Or low alcohol beer. Or have a massive gelato or pudding.

PumpkinPie2016 · 01/09/2023 21:46

We do drink, but not a lot. So, sometimes, we don't fancy alcohol.

In which case we may have a soft drink or an alcohol free beer. Had some lovely ones in Austria recently.
