Does anyone else think that Carrie is a bitch? Why the hell was she so awful to Aidan?

Haha such a pointless post but I'm sick and binge watching the series again and I have no friends so hoping someone else will join in the chat.

It's weird because when I watched it when I was younger I felt like 'big' was the right choice, the exciting, bad boy but now that I'm more mature, I'd love an Aidan!

Oh she's awful. What really struck me watching again was all the 'omg I'm in the country' fish out of water episodes. God she's annoying. And her really clunky one liners, she had no wit. And always fawning over her male friends and treating her female friends like crap. Aiden deserved far better but tbh it also wasn't at all clear why he even wanted to be with her in the first place. None of her relationships made sense because she didn't.

I thought the bit with Berger was slightly more interesting- someone you are totally compatible with except sexually. They could have done something with that.

yes!! Whenever she meets friends from any other place but New York (or leaves New York to visit them). And how they talk about somebody moving to - gasp - Connecticut 😂😂

I haven’t gotten to Aiden yet… but the whole Big thing has been mindboggling up to now.

PurpleFlower1983 · 14/12/2023 06:52

Yes she’s awful! And they’ve acknowledged that Big was the wrong choice in the reboot.

Zfactorstar · 14/12/2023 07:58

I tried to watch this series recently. I remember even when I was younger that I found the show a bit problematic but funny, now it's pretty much unwatchable.

Didimum · 14/12/2023 08:28

TV would be boring if characters always did what they were ‘supposed’ to do and made the ‘right’ choices. I prefer a flawed protagonist myself.

Is the reboot watchable?

Carrie was literally the worst. I never got the Aiden hype though. I thought he was quite controlling.

I want odd gum wgwn he made her give up smoking.

SammyScrounge · 29/02/2024 23:33

Sorry I went off him when he made her give up smoking.

Rosestulips · 29/02/2024 23:38

I never really liked Carrie’s or Miranda’s characters. Aidan and Carrie weren’t suited at all.

Samantha and Charlotte were the best, authentic and true to themselves

Merryoldgoat · 29/02/2024 23:38

I never liked Aiden or Big. I liked Harry. I didn’t like Steve either. I did like Samantha’s partner though.

Miranda was my favourite and how she could dump that hot doctor for Steve is beyond me.

Carrie was exceptionally self centred and extremely unlikeable.

Blackcats7 · 29/02/2024 23:43

I am rewatching it too and some of it is uncomfortable viewing but reflects attitudes of the times. The bit where carrie’s male friend had been taping sex with women without consent would not pass now thankfully.
I always thought Aidan much nicer than Big too.
Absolutely hated the updated version And just like that. The trans character was not at all nice but it appeared that we were supposed to think that the relationship with miranda was totally fine.
Seemed like propaganda more than entertainment.

Mnetcurious · 29/02/2024 23:43

Funnily enough I’m the opposite - the first time round watching it in my 20s I was totally team Aiden and couldn’t understand why she wanted Big when he treated her so badly. Watching it again now in my mid 40s I can see that actually she was a massive part of the problem in the Big relationship and am much more on his side. Also absolutely loving Samantha and her humour this time round having not been much of a Samantha fan when it first aired. Weird.

SameSameButDeliverance · 29/02/2024 23:56

Carrie was AWFUL. Self centred, vacuous, selfish and a bad friend (‘bullshit bagel’ anyone?).

Aiden gave / gives me the ick big time. Hate the way he spoke, moved, dressed, moaned when kissing. Controlling and pushy too. Urgh.

LOVED Samantha. Honest, loyal, open hearted, funny and a great friend (diaphragm removal anyone?). Miranda was a bit too uptight for me. Charlotte too prim (until she married. Tuchus Linus anyone?).

Harry and Smith were the best blokes but I always had a soft spot for Big. He never lied about who he was and what he wanted. Carrie just didn’t listen and then victimised herself when he followed through (or not) with his plans.

It’s less that Carrie is ‘flawed’ than that we get her banal girl-about-town shtick as the narrator, so it’s kind of central. And self-consciously quirky, like her clothes. But it’s not just Carrie. They’re all awful. Samantha is a misogynist’s idea about the sexually liberated woman, and Miranda is a cliché hard nosed lawyer who is ‘tamed’ by being awarded a doofus boyfriend and a baby, and Charlotte is a tiresome prim princess.

IHateLegDay · 01/03/2024 00:11

Carrie is the worst character. She's so self absorbed and awful to her friends and partners.
I honestly can't stand her.

justasking111 · 01/03/2024 00:15

They've mellowed with age in Just like that.

I couldn't watch SATC again.

This seems to be a popular view but I just don’t see it at all. She was not “awful” to her friends.

She was always the one they chose for important moments in their lives. She was at the birth of Miranda’s baby and chosen to be godmother. Samantha confided in Carrie first about her cancer and later about worrying about how she might die - Carrie also went with her to the hospital for her first appointment. It’s Carrie who Harry calls when Charlotte has a miscarriage and Carrie goes round to see Charlotte straight away. Miranda calls Carrie first when her mother dies. Even the trivial stuff like Charlotte being distraught that a man fell asleep while having sex with her - it’s Carrie she runs to to cry.

I think a lot of hate for Carrie is classic female competition / envy - she’s good looking, has an incredible body, wears fabulous clothes, has a great social life and lots of friends, and is generally well-loved. She’s unapologetically into fashion, glamour and city life. She knows what she wants and refuses to settle.

jobsjkfo · 21/04/2024 20:32

It's good to have a dynamic character. Too often women are written too simply (usually by men...) as being too saintly or a sinner, Carrie is just a woman, she can be funny, she can be annoying, she makes mistakes, we don't always like her. She's human 🤷‍♀️

Dweetfidilove · 21/04/2024 20:39

She was always needy, whiny and self-absorbed. The episode where she expected Charlotte to fund the purchase of her apartment 😳🫣👀.

I liked Aiden, but there’s something about that toxic Mr Big 🤦🏾‍♀️.

Might have to rewatch now as haven’t seen it since back then 😊.

YaMuvva · 21/04/2024 20:47

Carrie is a TOTAL bitch and I thought it at the time

But I don’t mind a bitch main character - it makes a show more interesting. It’s boring to have a nicey nice main character.

But my question is: when she was such a horrible woman who treated everyone terribly, why was everyone so in love with her?!

She settled- for the most awful man - of all the disastrous relationships she had, then had to be rescued by another man.

She was many of the things you list, but still quite self-absorbed and whiny. Absolutely fabulous - yes! The one everyone turned to - I guess that was how the writers meant to make her personable.

Unapologetic for me were Samantha and Charlotte.

Can you explain to me how she was a ‘total bitch’? I don’t mean the odd bad thing she might have done, as all the characters did, over the six seasons of the show. I mean as a personality trait, how was she a total bitch and ‘such a horrible woman’?

I genuinely just don’t see it at all!

Also, people forget that she was the main character of the show and the narrator. Most of the show was from her POV, that’s probably why she comes across as ‘self-absorbed’. The show is 80% the Carrie show because it was written that way.

OrangeCrusher · 21/04/2024 20:56

Apart from Samantha and Smith they were all awful. All the men were especially dreadful, Aidan was a total wet blanket, Steve was a manipulative arse and Berger was like a female version of Carrie in many ways.

Americano75 · 21/04/2024 21:01

I still love SATC, still dip in and out occasionally. And I still get emotional when Harry proposes to Charlotte then immediately piss myself laughing at 'I am so coming back next week'.

There were loads of times when Carrie was a total bitch. She was horrible to Miranda when Steve cheated on her, and I blame her for Miranda going back to the little arsehole. 😂 Shes bloody awful to Natasha too. Then when Charlotte got engaged she made the whole thing about how she got dumped by post it note, as if Berger was the love of her life. 🙄

Usernamen · 21/04/2024 21:15

Was the Steve thing in the movie? Yeah I’ve blocked those out of my memory so can’t comment on that.

The post-it episode is an example of what I’m talking about - instances of awful behaviour (which you can find for any of the characters) but not really representative of the character’s personality. She was livid she got broken up with on a post-it and went on (and on) about it.

Also, her relationship with Berger was more important than Charlotte and Harry’s relationship from the show’s perspective as Carrie is the main character - so blame the writers that more wasn’t made of Charlotte’s engagement in that episode!
