@BillaBongGirl

That's the third time, at least, that you've posted that same photo. Unnecessary.

I find it’s a convenient timesaver for myself when other posters do it for me so I don’t have to scroll back and look upthread for a past post. It’s intended in the spirit of helpfulness so all the info is in one post.

Sorry you think it is unnecessary for you personally.

So...what do you think about the use of this in the actual advert?

wayyour · 26/08/2023 17:21

You might find it helpful, but posting the same photo multiple times is spamming.

Nothing of it. Acting like a Karen is a bad thing.

Even when I have seen that we have had several new posters joining the thread who may not want to go back to all 19 previous pages of the thread to hunt down a definition I posted awhile back?

So this is the crux of the disagreement. I agree that being a Karen as described in the definition you’ve posted is a bad thing. Of course it is! It is a horrific way to behave. But the other issue is that Karen has been co-opted and is routinely leveled at women not doing any of the things mentioned in your definition and precisely because of your posted definition and HOW bad that actually is to be, it now has the power to shut up women for speaking up about all sorts of things that are not about them being racist or entitled.

So fight for Karen to be reinstated to its original and intended use instead of fighting for banning it wholesale. If you’re not being a Karen, then being called one should have no power over you. It only has the power you give it.

SomeCatFromJapan · 26/08/2023 17:44

Acting like a Karen is a bad thing.

Unfortunately (and has been amply illustrated on this thread), peple all have their own definition of what that entails. So for many men, younger women etc, that could simply mean a woman over 40 being assertive or saying something they don't like. And they have a convenient shorthand slur to shut that down.

SomeCatFromJapan · 26/08/2023 17:46

If only. It's essentially shorthand for "shut up, you old bag". That's going to get draining and upsetting even for the most assertive women. For those less so, it will shut them up even if they've done nothing wrong. Not everyone is brimming with confidence.

Poudretteite · 26/08/2023 17:46

The Karen misgyny is disgusting.
I've never seen a man worry about complaining about something due to being called a 'karen'. By contrast I've heard women worry about anything from stopping a classmate copying their work to reporting workplace harassment because they don't want to be a Karen.
There's always a way to try and shut women up.

People all have their own definition of a lot of derogatory terms, but we don’t try and ban those terms as offensive as a result. Do you know how many times I have seen people say a 28yr old is pedophile for being interested in an 18yr old? When that’s not pedophilia at all. That’s not the definition. But pedophilia exists, pedophiles exist and the term is still a valid term. No one is arguing omg poor menz they get called a pedo to silence and shut them up because they click on bikini pics of 18yr old Love Island contestants and Only Fans models.

Karens are entitled white women who use their privilege to do racist things…they exist they do racism. The fact that lots of ignorance exists over Karenning and what is a Karen doesn’t mean we should find the term Karen offensive. It’s the behaviour of a Karen that is offensive (and in some cases criminal).

Yet you are arguing omg poor womenz, they are being silenced by being called a Karen just for being assertive so Karen cannot exist. It can’t be used.

Just stand up for yourselves, if you’re being called a Karen when you’re not acting a Karen.

SomeCatFromJapan · 26/08/2023 17:54

As if we women (sorry "womenz" as you rather disparagingly call us) have any power to ban or stop the word. We can barely discuss it here, in a predominantly female space, without getting shut down. Chance would be a fine thing.

ChardonnaysBeastlyCat · 26/08/2023 17:55

I'm so tired of the casual misogyny.

It's a lazy insult. It's used by people who cannot use their words because they actually have no words to use.

Those who would like the advert banned and the use of Karen stopped due to it being offensive has an 83% approval vote so I’d say that the discussion on here is certainly not shutting your view down.

My view is a dissenting minority. If anyone is being shut down, it’s we few who think Karen isn’t inherently offensive even though it like all other derogatory terms in history can be misused in an offensive manner.

ArabeIIaScott · 26/08/2023 18:09

BillaBongGirl · 26/08/2023 16:24

Your example is an example of “Karen” being misused to insult a woman by immature, teenage boys.

It’s not an example of what Karen means or its intended usage.

So you dismiss any usage that counters your claim of how the word is 'intended' to be used as 'misuse'? Intended by whom? The teenage boys' intention doesn't count?

This is not how language, memes, and slang work.

I dismissed one example of usage that was clearly a misuse.

It’s not “my claim” but rather a reflection of the widely accepted and documented definition of the Karen term present in multiple published dictionaries globally. I have posted the Australian dictionary definition as the advert we are discussing was posted by an Australian company in Australia.

Yes, language, memes and slang are not always used correctly regardless of the speakers intentions.

Who else does this apply to?

Any slur or derogatory language against any group including minorities or just women?

Karen isn’t a slur, so cannot apply to slurs
Would apply to other various derogatory names for poor anti-social behaviour by an individual. (It’s not uncommon for such derogatory names to be gendered).

SomeCatFromJapan · 26/08/2023 18:26

So according to you, it is not a slur against middle-aged women and can never be and we should just woman the fuck up if we're called it. Okay, got it.

Why do you say it isn’t a slur when women know it is

Do you reject their lived experience?

I’m sorry but no. You could say that about any slur! Of course slurs have power, that’s why they’re used.

Who are you to tell someone whether they have been insulted or not? Why would you dismiss someone lived experience like this?
