Aibu smoking weed around children camping

Just wondering if aibu or not

We have paid around £100 each (family of 5) to camp with my friend and her kids at a popular farm park that are doing a weekend where you stay over.

A lady with two children around 2 and 11 has camped right next to us and immediately started smoking around us as soon as she pitched up early this afternoon (there is a designated smoking area at the bottom of the field).

Got back from a toilet trip around an hour ago to find the whole area in and around my tent stinking of weed. Went and reported to a staff member who went and spoke to her and told her that even smoking in or near your tent isn't allowed and she said it was definitely this woman next door smoking it.

The staff member came back and told me this and offered to let us move our tent tomorrow but we have quite a big and heavy tent and we want to be off exploring with our kids not wasting time we have paid for moving. Plus we wouldn't be with our friends anymore unless they moved too.

I feel bad for her kids and im really annoyed she cant just give it a bloody rest for 2 nights on a kiddies camping weekend. This woman's tent is pretty small and she must have been right next to her kids, its got me thinking... do the staff at the park have a duty of care to report this woman? Is smoking weed around your kids considered neglect?

I used to smoke weed when I was younger and I’m pro legalisation however smoking a mind altering drug proven to be damaging to developing brains is not on. It’s an illegal drug so you would be perfectly in your right to push for safeguarding issues to be raised. I still have friends who have the occasional spliff however they do it away from their dc, don’t hang around them stoned and make sure not to transfer any oils or anything to their kids. Id be angry if I saw that happen, id probably call the police.

Whatsthepoint1234 · 25/08/2023 23:34

I thought it was a festival but I’ve reread. A kiddies/family camping weekend? Even worse as she’s not only exposing her kids but other peoples kids. She should’ve been asked to leave, what on Earth was she thinking!

Thisismeyeah · 25/08/2023 23:35

She should smoke in the smoking area. She should also not be openly smoking weed its really that simple.

With regards to the neglect if she sat and drank wine would you be of the same opinion. Have you drank alcohol, is that neglect? If she is absolutely off her face then fine but she may smoke it for medical benefits.

Personally if I am sole incharge, no DH around I dont drink while DS is awake.

TriedToMakeMeGoToRehab · 25/08/2023 23:37

I’d be really pissed off as well. The social or police won’t be interested at all though, unless she’s so intoxicated that she can’t look after the children. The site should be telling her to move, or leave though, not suggestion you move!

Thisismeyeah · 25/08/2023 23:37

....obviously smoking around anyone who may breath it in is bad at any time

Greeneggsandspamm · 25/08/2023 23:39

@Thisismeyeah

I will have a glass of wine with my kids around but its not the same. Her kids are inhaling the smoke; if I drink a glass of wine or two it's not going into my children's bodies or any one else's for that matter.

The kids won't be breathing wine into their lungs?

Greeneggsandspamm · 25/08/2023 23:42

@TriedToMakeMeGoToRehab

It was around half 10 when this happened and I'd feel so sad for her poor kids having to leave so late.

Just doesn't sit right though that she's getting baked next door with kids all around. I will say something tomorrow to the staff I think.

You can’t inhale wine smoke… it’s not the same. I’m pro legalistation and agree weed should be treated like alcohol however it is both pungent smelling and creates smoke that kids can inhale.

Justrolledmyeyesoutloud · 25/08/2023 23:52

Her poor children. I would be so pissed off op.

sillyuniforms · 26/08/2023 00:02

She should be moved not you

Scylax · 26/08/2023 02:52

That’s not ok; she needs to stop or they need to remove her. Regardless of what anyone thinks should or should not be the case it isn’t allowed, and it certainly isn’t healthy for the children - hers or anyone else’s.

Defiantjazz · 26/08/2023 08:40

Drinking while in sole charge of a 2 year old would be far from ideal.

wowthatsharsh · 26/08/2023 08:48

The person smoking weed should be the ones moving their tent.

You are following the rules. They aren't!

Viviennemary · 26/08/2023 08:50

You should report it to the police. She should not be using drugs in a public place round children.

CloudyMcCloudy · 26/08/2023 08:52

Yanbu ask for her to be moved

Thisismeyeah · 26/08/2023 09:27

I never said smoking weed was acceptable, quite the opposite. You can't argue your judgement is less impaired from drinking alcohol to someone who has smoked a small amount of weed. Clearly she shouldnt be smoking weed or cigarettes around the tents, children or any other living breathing thing.

Thisismeyeah · 26/08/2023 09:35

Tell them she needs to move or you want your money back and will go elsewhere. I wouldnt trust her to not do it again

Dolores87 · 26/08/2023 11:19

I don't think her being stoned is a problem kids or no kids but I think she should have the basic courtesy so smoke it away from everyone or eat it instead

Bunsandtophats · 26/08/2023 11:25

I'm angry for you OP. This is why recreational drugs should NEVER be legalised. Utterly unbelievable that anyone, let alone a parent, thinks this is unacceptable way to behave. Aside from the fact that that most level headed people go camping to enjoy the fresh air and scenery!

Interesting that you think it's ok for her be stoned ...with kids 😯

suburbophobe · 26/08/2023 11:36

Bet car exhaust fumes are 100 x worse than a bit of weed being exhaled.

OneTC · 26/08/2023 11:36

The weed could be legally obtained and on prescription. Having a spliff doesn't render most users incapable around children. She should have more respect for those around her though

I often have a glass of wine - often two - when in charge of my baby and 2 year old. It's a wonder we have survived so long.

Cowlover89 · 26/08/2023 11:43

Yanbu. She should have edibles instead.
