I have not received a single letter in 3 weeks - wtf?

As the title says, we have not received a single letter in the post for three weeks - not even junk mail.

We’ve been so busy with work and our son that it’s only today we’ve realised that actually there could be an issue.

I have been waiting on HMRC letters which haven’t come but they can be slow so I thought that would be the reason. I’m waiting on a hospital appointment date that hasn’t come. I got a call yesterday from my son’s complex needs specialist saying she’d sent us two letters in the post and had we received them, meaning we missed an appointment. And today a client said that products she had sent to me had been returned to her.

Is it best to call Royal Mail? I have never heard of this happening before & can’t think why on earth we would suddenly stop receiving post - so wanted to ask whether this has ever happened to anyone else?!

Has happened to us a few times over the years. I’ve found the complaints line really effective at unsticking things, they investigate if people have received less than maybe 2(?) items of post in a week based on average post for a household. Whenever I’ve complained a massive bundle of post has arrived within 2-3 days including all the post I was expecting.

How to contact Royal Mail complaints if you're a personal customer

We strive to give you a reliable service, but if something goes wrong you can complain to us and give your feedback here.

There's just been another load of postal workers fired for stealing and binning mail. It effected Merseyside and North Wales. I now wrong the appointment line, give in the NHS number to see if there's appointments booked. It's bad that they didn't text you. My DD had to accept an appointment via a automated telephone call. That department shouldn't be relying on the post.

wellingtonsandwaffles · 17/08/2023 00:17

We have this, no postal workers and apparently no agency either! Get post about every 2-3 weeks. Normal built up area too, nothing remote!

Royalsrumbled · 17/08/2023 00:18

We have had this too! Yorkshire based
, typical built up area.

unsync · 17/08/2023 00:57

Essex, post comes every 10 days or so. Delivery today, previous one was Saturday before last.

In the 1800s wealthy landowners, would have a country property, but also a London house. When they were in London, they would send by post parcels of fresh eggs, fresh farm produce. Twice a day, with the morning and afternoon post. If it was within a day's journey, then they would send perishables like milk, & fresh game.

GrandTheftWalrus · 17/08/2023 01:35

I'm in Scotland and barely any post here either

Ihateslugs · 17/08/2023 01:38

Yesterday I realised that my car tax was over due, since the 1st August. I did not receive a reminder letter, the V11 with the necessary code, but luckily I remembered that I bought my car in August so the tax was due and I had the V5 with a different code on to pay online.

But I have had other post this week, such as the results of a recent mammogram so I know the postman has been but certainly fewer letters/ junk mail than usual - I wonder if they are struggling to cover the holiday season?

Willyoujustbequiet · 17/08/2023 01:40

Yes happening in the north east too. 10 days without anything and 2 medical appts missed.

Royal Mail isn't fit for purpose.

GeneJeanie · 17/08/2023 02:26

its almost as if privatisation doesn’t work.

Toddlerteaplease · 17/08/2023 02:54

I've had next doors post instead!

Threenow · 17/08/2023 05:24

I send mail to the UK from overseas sometimes, and am shocked at how long it takes to be delivered. Parcels get from here to the UK quickly enough, but then it is weeks before they arrive at the sender's address, and letters aren't any faster.

JanglingJack · 17/08/2023 05:42

You've just reminded me to follow up health letters I haven't received. Sorry that doesn't help you. I know during the postal strikes that we'd had nothing for at least 3 weeks, but it still seems sparse - especially for someone who has plenty of overdue bills. Eek.

Theraffarian · 17/08/2023 06:20

Same happens here every so often . If I call the complaints line they can normally tell you vaguely why , here it’s almost always lack of staff to do the deliveries. Post then arrives bundled together a couple of days later . I’ve no idea if they deliver the whole street then , or just to the person who complains .

PollyPut · 17/08/2023 06:48

@whatthehellll we have times when mail not being delievred. Usually seems to be when there is covid in our sorting office and they are short staffed.

I'd call your sorting office as a first step to find out what's happening and also whether there is a pile of post that you can come and collect.

Maybe log a complaint too so that you have something on record if something important gets delayed and you need some evidence

StoatofDisarray · 17/08/2023 06:51

Same here: central London. In fact it's the main topic of conversation on the estate WhatsApp group! Three weeks!

MotherOfGodWeeFella · 17/08/2023 06:51

Our postie is great, but it sounds as though there are either staffing or theft problems or a combination of both in your area OP.

AuntieJoyce · 17/08/2023 06:57

I’ve noticed that we only get post now once or twice a week and then it seems to be three or four letters at a time.

If I could be bothered to pay £5 I’d try an experiment of posting myself a first class letter every day for a week to see when they were delivered. I bet they would be in one or two batches.

YourNameGoesHere · 17/08/2023 06:57

It's definitely a wide spread issue. We've had no post now since about the 4th August except for the junk they deliver to everyone.

I'd definitely get in touch with your local sorting office to see if you can collect any letters etc from there. As as side note I do wish the NHS would send stuff via email or text though, post is such an antiquated way of sending appointments.

CoreopsisEverywhere · 17/08/2023 07:17

We’re having this too - a big handful of letters twice a week and nothing on other days. My postman, who I chat to when walking the dog, still comes to the village every day. He says the problem here is at the sorting office which is now only open a couple of hours a day instead of a long full day.

I get all my appointments via text and I am signed up to access them online too. Have you asked your Trust if they have this system?

Our trust doesn't even do online GP appointments were stuck in the dark ages of ringing at 8am even for routine checks like asthma check ups. Text appointments are some sort of futuristic concept here.

Gingerbeerfear · 17/08/2023 07:36

I have been wondering the exact same thing! I also had no car tax/mot reminders so nearly missed doing both, had a thought they must be due soon so did an online check with 3 days to go! A cheque hasn’t arrived is quite a large one and should have been here a week ago. I had a fist full of pizza flyers about 3 weeks ago and that is it.

Hebditch · 17/08/2023 07:37

Exactly this for us too- we live in Hampshire and are going 7-10 days without a delivery. A small item I bought on online which was dispatched on 25 July arrived yesterday, 16 August. A couple of weeks ago when we had a delivery I spoke to the postman and he said that they just don’t have enough staff- they can’t even get enough agency workers- so it looks like daily post is a thing of the past...

Augustus40 · 17/08/2023 07:44

Yes it affects buying things on Ebay. So annnoying.
