To be really really pissed off with the vendor of my house?

I moved in last weds.
I knew she had a dog. Turns out she had three pug dogs which were often let alone for extended periods.
the house was covered in dog hair- it was even in the fridge and freezer. These had not been cleaned of food debris either.
dog shit left all of the back garden.
there was so much dog hair in the carpets that it formed an almost solid dog hair tube in all the pipe work and on the rollers which I had to use a stick to push out.🤢 it looked like a long piece of shit when I finally got it out.
my bedroom has carpet- the 2 others do not- lucky them because my bedroom REEKS of dog- I mean you can smell it before you go in the room- the Hal and startles have the same carpet which also stinks.

I have used a carpet cleaner on it three times and even spent more money getting a special pet cleaner.
according to my neighbour the dogs used to spend a lot time in that room on their own- letting themselves out through a cat flap to the garden.
She could hear them barking when the owner was out.
the carpet has clearly been pissed on multiple times and there were remnants of dog shit on it too.
I cannot get the smell out. It wakes me up in the night.

How can people live like that?
I am not a crazy cleaning lady by any means. I hate cleaning, but I do it to a reasonable standard- but this?
it is a decent carpet with good bounce in it, but I am beginning to think it is unsaveable because the dog urine has been there so long.
Does anyone know a way to get rid of the smell? As soon as the carpet shampoo the smell is back.

I HATE sleeping in there I feel so dirty.
I might just pull it up and have that as yet another thing I have to fix in the house.

Do dog owners really not realise how bad their houses can smell?
Clearly she is a bit of an extreme case , but I am absolutely flipping furious.
she also took stuff that she said she would leave on the fixtures and fittings - I am talking to my solicitor about that.😡

I think youll most likely have to pull it up.

Hardbackwriter · 13/08/2023 18:27

The house sounds grim but surely at least some of that was obvious when you viewed? Didn't you smell the house then?

DannyLaRuesBestFrock · 13/08/2023 18:30

Chuck everything and get it all new. I would be ripping the carpets up as piss will have seeped through to the floorboards.

I'm a bit perplexed as to why you never noticed this before when viewing?

WhiteFire · 13/08/2023 18:31

I think the carpet will have to go, chances are it will have seeped through to the underlay and floor boards.

Leave it bare for a while before putting anything down (other than cheap rugs and runners)

Toottooot · 13/08/2023 18:33

Surely she couldn’t mask that when you viewed the property?

Filament · 13/08/2023 18:34

I'd always assume carpets would need to be replaced in a house I've bought.

DobbyTheHouseElk · 13/08/2023 18:35

You will probably need to replace the floorboards as well.

TheYearOfSmallThings · 13/08/2023 18:37

I assure you, in the grand scheme of unpleasant surprises you can find when you buy a house, a bit of dog hair and smell is nothing.

LittleAlexHornn · 13/08/2023 18:38

The smell will be in the floorboards, you'll likely need to replace those and then of course the carpet. Sand, sugarsoap and paint the walls too.

It must have smelt awful when you viewed? What did she take that she said she was leaving?

LookItsMeAgain · 13/08/2023 18:38

I'd hire a skip and get rid of the carpets. I'd rather have bare floorboards for a few months (if the cost of new carpets is the issue) than have that.

Grim grim grim grim grim.

GenieGenealogy · 13/08/2023 18:41

Friends of ours moved into a bungalow where there had been 2 dogs. They didn't notice the smell when the house was full of furniture and the owners' possessions. Once empty it reeked to high heaven and yes, the only way of dealing with the carpet stench of urine was to hire a skip, rip out all the carpets, and start again.

TheLightSideOfTheMoon · 13/08/2023 18:43

You knew she had a dog. Everyone knows what houses with dogs in smell like.

You should’ve accounted for that and arranged the carpet to be replaced ASAP.

Clymene · 13/08/2023 18:44

How did you not notice all this when you viewed the house? Confused

Sausagesandpeas · 13/08/2023 18:46

We moved into a similar house. The dog wee had seeped into the underlay and beyond that into the floorboards! All carpets came up and then we spent a few weeks carpet free while we cleaned and treated the stains / smells on the actual floorboards. Only once this was gone did we put fresh carpets in.
Pulling those carpets up was one of the worst things I’ve had to do!

Mumontherunn · 13/08/2023 18:48

When we moved into our home I had a room with really bad dog urine stains from an elderly dog. Lovely expensive wool carpet and then covered in wee stains. However, I borrowed a carpet cleaner and used Dr Beckmann pet urine carpet cleaner multiple times over the course of a week and eventually it shifted the smell and most of the marks. It will be replaced in the future but it meant I don’t have to rush to do it at least. Good luck!

GoodChat · 13/08/2023 18:48

Yeah you're going to have to replace the carpets and underlay

ItsNotRocketSalad · 13/08/2023 18:48

I moved just before Christmas and the previous owner left the shed crammed full of broken furniture. Then after Christmas dinner I turned on the dishwasher for the first time and it blew the electrics, so we sat in darkness for the rest of the day. The engineer said some part was completely rotted and it had obviously been broken a long time. Thanks, twat owner.

SecretVictoria · 13/08/2023 18:49

Who are all these people who don’t train their dogs? I have a dog, he was toilet trained about 2 weeks after we got him. Unless a dog is unwell, there should be no reason they wee inside.

BanditsOnTheHorizon · 13/08/2023 18:49

In your shoes op I'd rip out all the carpets and deal with naked floors.

Buy an air purifier too which will help. The smell is from the fine dander hair you can't really see, plus urine stinks. Get a good flat mop and mop all the walls too.

Sorry, but everyone who has a dog does not have a smelly house! And you are v rude to suggest that.

BigButtons · 13/08/2023 18:50

When I viewed the smell was little bit noticeable as there is a dog here smell- but the smell was so much worse when we moved in- so much worse
i had no idea there was dog piss all over it.
It didn’t smell that bad before. Maybe she had disguised the smell when I viewed.🤷🏻‍♀️

Yeah, I rolled my eyes at that too. I've never had dogs but I've been in plenty of houses that do and very few of them smelled.

Westsussexisbest · 13/08/2023 18:56

I have tried to get rid of dog smell with bicarbonate of soda. It did not work so don't try that

Tumbler2121 · 13/08/2023 19:04

An estate agent once told me the best house bargain ever was to buy a dirty house ... this put so many people off it knocked far more from the price than the cost of getting commercial cleaners in.

BigButtons · 13/08/2023 19:10

I am cutting the carpet up now.
