To be really really pissed off with the vendor of my house?

BigButtons · 13/08/2023 18:25

I moved in last weds.
I knew she had a dog. Turns out she had three pug dogs which were often let alone for extended periods.
the house was covered in dog hair- it was even in the fridge and freezer. These had not been cleaned of food debris either.
dog shit left all of the back garden.
there was so much dog hair in the carpets that it formed an almost solid dog hair tube in all the pipe work and on the rollers which I had to use a stick to push out.🤢 it looked like a long piece of shit when I finally got it out.
my bedroom has carpet- the 2 others do not- lucky them because my bedroom REEKS of dog- I mean you can smell it before you go in the room- the Hal and startles have the same carpet which also stinks.

I have used a carpet cleaner on it three times and even spent more money getting a special pet cleaner.
according to my neighbour the dogs used to spend a lot time in that room on their own- letting themselves out through a cat flap to the garden.
She could hear them barking when the owner was out.
the carpet has clearly been pissed on multiple times and there were remnants of dog shit on it too.
I cannot get the smell out. It wakes me up in the night.

How can people live like that?
I am not a crazy cleaning lady by any means. I hate cleaning, but I do it to a reasonable standard- but this?
it is a decent carpet with good bounce in it, but I am beginning to think it is unsaveable because the dog urine has been there so long.
Does anyone know a way to get rid of the smell? As soon as the carpet shampoo the smell is back.

I HATE sleeping in there I feel so dirty.
I might just pull it up and have that as yet another thing I have to fix in the house.

Do dog owners really not realise how bad their houses can smell?
Clearly she is a bit of an extreme case , but I am absolutely flipping furious.
she also took stuff that she said she would leave on the fixtures and fittings - I am talking to my solicitor about that.😡

Completely unrelated to dog stink- I went to Cook myself something for the first time yesterday and found that it is an induction job and I have only one pan that works🥴😫

🤣🤣 next time you view a house you need to pay more attention 🙈

Readingineading · 13/08/2023 20:26

It'll be in the underlay. Same happened to my DP'S. They hadnt seen any dogs during the viewings and a neighbour confirmed that the vendor had 2 that were left all day while he was at work. We & the neighbours think he got a rug doctor and did the carpets the day before each viewing ( they viewed 3 times). Once they got the keys a couple of months later the smell of dog piss hit you as soon as you went in.

Yep- that sounds like what happened to me. As you go in the front door the smell hit you.
Skanky bastards .

I have never been in a house with a dog that didn't smell of the dog.

Obviously there are levels, but you can always tell if a dog lives there.

Nah, lots of places with dogs don't smell, but certain breeds of dog really do smell more than others, thus making those homes smell.

This happened to me too! It doesn't look all that different to an electric hob if you've not had induction before. I had nothing that worked! Luckily a trip to a nearby hardware store for some stainless steel pans was a quick and cheap fix. Well done on ripping up those carpets sounds like the only answer. Astonishing how anyone can live like that. Rank.

Yeah- I’ve ever had gas up until now- electric/ induction- I hadn’t a clue. Pity as I have some favourite pans but those induction adapters are really expensive.!

Who are all these people who don’t train their dogs? I have a dog, he was toilet trained about 2 weeks after we got him. Unless a dog is unwell, there should be no reason they wee inside.

My DD's partner's mother had three dogs and couldn't be arsed to house train them because 'it wasn't worth it'.

Whatever that means.

There's just a lot of different levels, from 'a dog lives here' to 'the dog has been urinating here and no one has ever really cleaned properly'.

BigButtons · 13/08/2023 20:59

My late mother was like this- I grew up in a house that stank. She would keep her dogs way past when they should have been put down and were incontinent- .
the stench of ammonia would make your eyes water.
she would leave piles of dog shit in the garden.
in a house I was renting a few years ago the agents were very particular - no pets. She would come and visit- she only lived 5 mins drive down the road- and bring her favourite dog with her because she said the children would be excited. The dog certainly got excited and would piss on my cream carpets.
when I got a bucket and scrubbing brush my mum couldn’t understand why I was cleaning it up. ‘It’s only a little wee- don’t be so dramatic bigbuttons’
so the state of this house has touched a nerve.

My parents moved and left their house immaculate with the grass freshly cut and professionally cleaned. Unfortunately they moved into a place in a similar condition to yours. Garden full of dog shit, carpets were rank and the floors were actually sticky. It was revolting. We immediately ripped up and dumped the carpets and hired someone to clean it top to toe. Got rid of any soft furnishings like curtains that always retain pet smells. It was hard work but it is a lovely house now. Good luck, it's bloody annoying but you will eventually have a great home!

fullbloom87 · 13/08/2023 21:01

I have dogs but I would still rip that carpet out if I moved in. No way would I live with a single speck of someone else's dog poo or wee.
Sorry you had to endure this. I would contact the estate agent and ask them to pass a message onto the vendor. Maybe a small claims court perhaps?
We run an estate agents and have dealt with many grievances like these. We can tell the vendors to clear up and sort out issues but we can't force them. There definitely needs to be a contractual agreement for new house purchases that they're left in a hygienic condition unless of course it's a dilapidated building.

FirstFallopians · 13/08/2023 21:03

LookItsMeAgain · 13/08/2023 18:38

I'd hire a skip and get rid of the carpets. I'd rather have bare floorboards for a few months (if the cost of new carpets is the issue) than have that.

Grim grim grim grim grim.

100% this.

Get rid of the carpet, wash down the floorboards and beetle it to IKEA or Dunelm for a big rug.

So you fully understood the potential issues and still bought it!

As I said sold as seen, it’s yours get on with it!

ActDottie · 13/08/2023 21:09

This is why I get a house professionally cleaned before moving in. But I don’t know how you missed all this before moving in?

It wasn’t like this when I viewed as I clearly stated - if you bothered to read the whole thread you would know this. Lazy.

ChiefWiggumsBoy · 13/08/2023 21:31

Our vendor also clearly stopped cleaning anything (or paying any bills Hmm) the second the sale was agreed. We knew she had a cat, but when we moved in, we had to buy a new hoover as ours just couldn't cut it. She also left us fleas which was nice. Didn't realise until my son came to me with the tell-tale bites as they don't affect me.

And you absolutely can always tell a house with animals.

Hollyppp · 13/08/2023 21:36

I would absolutely be getting rid of those carpets asap

RiderGirl · 13/08/2023 21:41

We had to rip the carpets out when we moved into our house - they were only a year old and were infested with fleas and soaked in dog and cat urine, revolting. We didn't notice a smell when we viewed, and couldn't afford new carpets for about a year. We also found a black dustbin full to the brim of dog shit and fetid water hidden behind a bush in the back garden, grim.

We have got a dog but we've got all hard flooring downstairs now (she sleeps downstairs, not allowed on sofas or beds). She also doesn't piss in the house, my house doesn't smell of dog. Some people are just disgusting.

lavenderlou · 13/08/2023 21:41

Sounds like my house when we moved in except it was laminate rather than carpets - all had to go. And they kept rabbits in one of the upstairs bedrooms and they had left droppings all over the floor. We planned to completely redo the house anyway so had the budget for it but it was grim. I'm not particularly houseproud but I don't know how some people can live that.

BigButtons · 13/08/2023 21:59

BlastedIce · 13/08/2023 21:30

Lol! Luckily I did two separate visits with two separate groups of people- all of whom were involved in moving me in. All of them have been astonished at the smell because it wasn’t there before.
