Settle an argument at home.

YANBU it doesn't matter which tinned tomatoes you buy they all taste the same and the trick is to cook them properly and drain off the watery stuff

YABU premium brands are so much better And have more pulp

I buy Aldis own brand whole plum tomatoes and they are fine. If you want a sweet kick to your meal Aldi cherry tomatoes are 75p a can. I normally do 750g mince 2 cans of plum and one of cherry tomatoes.

I’ve only ever bought supermarket own brand, not just tinned tomato’s but everything! It’s all made in the same factory

But not necessarily the same recipe or ingredients.

Oblomov23 · 30/07/2023 08:30

I think they all taste of nothing recently.

Cirio are better than Mutti IMO.

Cheap plum tomatoes are better than chopped.

I tried Cirio chopped tomatoes on the advice of a MN thread and they didnf taste any different to my usual own brand plum tomatoes that i buy from asda, tesco or aldi. Saying that, i only use tinned tomatoes in pasta sauces etc so perhaps it doesnt matter when you are adding a load of other things.

One thing that is a mystery to me, is why people would have tinned tomatoes rather than fresh in their breakfast.

WhamBamThankU · 30/07/2023 08:33

Tinned cherry tomatoes are always such a disappointment and not worth the money at all. I find the skins are always tougher and they're quite bitter compared to what you would expect from a lovely ripe cherry tomato.

AnIntrovert · 30/07/2023 08:35

Mufti, Mutti and Mutti. For tinned tomatoes and passata.

£1.45 a can. Blimey!!

This is about the normal price for a cheaper brand here at the moment. Not in UK so brand names differ.

The prices are extortionate for a tin of tomatoes right now, and I don't know why. We are in winter granted, but I am talking like double the price suddenly. In fact, I managed to buy a 3kg bag of fresh tomatoes for the same price as one can. It's bonkers.

But thank you for the tip for using whole not chopped. Now I think about it, the whole ones have less liquid and more tomato to fill the can.

MsMoody · 30/07/2023 08:38

Cirio is better than Mutti!! Use tinned tomatoes at least twice a week and I can’t go back to the cheapy ones now.

Absolute misconception. My Brother works for a well known pie company, they make pies/sausage rolls etc for different brands. Cheap pies are made with margarine in the pastry and cheap bits of meat, more expensive pies all butter pastry, high quality cuts of meat, there’s a massive difference. He’s also worked for a frozen veg packing company - peas are the prime example, sweetest freshest peas go to M&S, next best batch to Birds Eye and the older, bigger, harder peas are your budget brands. Yes, they might come from the same factory but the quality is massively different.

Mystery to me too! We have an amazing farm shop near us which also has a coffee shop with wonderful quality food, but their cooked breakfast akways has tinned tomatoes 🤮

daylilies · 30/07/2023 08:52

cirio tuscan for me when on offer!

fussychica · 30/07/2023 08:54

I use Cirio. I tried Mutti but was unimpressed for the extra money. If you want to try them though they are on offer at Waitrose at the moment for £4 for 4.

I've just checked my Tesco app for Mutti (I get a Tesco grocery delivery weekly and always have done), but all that came up were Mutti pasta and pizza sauces, not tinned tomatoes.

My local two Tescos don’t stock Mutti tinned tomatoes either, so I assume then perhaps Tesco don’t stock them at all.

TheDogsMother · 30/07/2023 09:05

I bought some from Lidl and they were really sharp like they had been made from unripe tomatoes. Recently the Sainsburys ones have gone the same way. I've found that a pinch of sugar can rescue them though. I haven't tried the Mutti tomatoes as the price has always put me off.

Same factory maybe. But definitely not same ingredients. Things like flour or sugar might be the same but put into different packaging but certainly not a lot of other foods.

Also I bought this Trullo cook book which totally changed how I cooked any sort of tinned tomatoes, I always seive off any excess liquid even if it is for a chilli or bolognese and cook them first then add them to a dish.

Unless you're trying to cook something in 5 minutes, why wouldn't you just simmer the sauce so the excess liquid evaporates? Maybe my tastebuds are faulty but I've never noticed this metallic taste. I do usually have onions and garlic in there with the tomatoes, though, and sometimes carrot and celery too. The natural sweetness of the veg probably cancels out any issue with the tomatoes. I usually add sundried tomato paste too.

I don’t really like grilled tomatoes. They are always either hard or mushy. Never just right. And with Tinned tomatoes there’s juice! Lovely juice to mop up with bread.

stiltonbriecheddar · 30/07/2023 10:13

KTM, Mutti or Napolina here

bellac11 · 30/07/2023 10:13

I saw Jamie Oliver suggesting you use plum tomatoes and just mash the up so I do this now

stiltonbriecheddar · 30/07/2023 10:13

Pressed send too soon I prefer passata if possible and Aldis passata with the black lid is amazing!

Fresh tomatoes arent tomatoey enough

JaukiVexnoydi · 30/07/2023 10:16

If you reduce down a tin of nasty watery cheap tomatoes to the same overall consistency as a tin of premium quality you only have half the volume of sauce, or less, so you need more tins - and you don't get a good flavour.

CurlewKate · 30/07/2023 10:18

It depends why you're doing with them. If I'm making a tomato sauce I'll use posh ones. If they're a background ingredient I'm use cheap with a little sugar.

ThinkingAgainAndAgain · 30/07/2023 10:40

I buy Cirio now, having bought own brand for 30 years. I only bought Cirio as they were recommended by Mary Berry for her ten minute tomato soup, and I saw a difference in flavour. I only buy them when theyre 4 for £2.50, which isn’t that much at all.
