Settle an argument at home.

YANBU it doesn't matter which tinned tomatoes you buy they all taste the same and the trick is to cook them properly and drain off the watery stuff

YABU premium brands are so much better And have more pulp

I find cheaper ones taste metallic.

Same!

Tinned cherry tomatoes.
I'll just leave that there

I adore them !

TenoringBehind · 29/07/2023 23:22

Mutti fans here too
we stock up when they’re on offer (which is quite often)

RosesAndHellebores · 29/07/2023 23:26

Napolina or Cirio. I stock up when they are on special offer. I think the whole.plum ones are better and have more flavour than chopped. They break up in a chilli, bol or casserole.

Katypp · 29/07/2023 23:31

is anyone else,a fan of tomato frito?

MrsCarson · 29/07/2023 23:32

I usually buy the cheapest but bought mid range just for comparison last week. They are much better less watery, more tomatoes. So I can only imagine that the Mutti ones or those that cost more are even better. I'm not going back to essentials ones now I'll get next step up.

Fruitbatdancer · 29/07/2023 23:34

Another one here to say definitely buy the more expensive ones and always whole plum. As per previous poster best tomatoes go in the whole tins, the chopped are the odds and sods and not always as ripe! (I watched one of those factory programmes!)

BibiBlocksberg · 29/07/2023 23:35

Another Mutti voter here but also has to be San Marzano Dell’Agro Sarnese-Nocerino D.O.P variant specifically

Discovered recently & somewhat sceptical to start with but worth every penny of their current eye watering price imo

Time saved & flavour more than make up for the cost, no buggering about endlessly trying to get rid of the tinny acidity of their cheaper cousins. by adjusting with sugar etc

Also love the newfound confidence of being able to rustle up a home made tomato pasta sauce knowing it will taste fab every time with minimal effort

BrioNotBiro · 29/07/2023 23:36

If I' cooking them down for some time in a sauce or casserole I buy passata; so much richer and thicker than tomatoes in liquid, and cheaper too.

Topee · 29/07/2023 23:37

Tinned tomatoes are definitely worth spending a bit extra on. The decent ones make a difference to how a dish tastes.

Crikeyalmighty · 29/07/2023 23:38

Cheaper ones are fine if going into say a chilli, Higher quality ones much better on toast or with cooked breakfasts

Taff67 · 29/07/2023 23:39

Cirio.

RootbeerLolly · 29/07/2023 23:39

IaltagDhubh · 29/07/2023 22:10

Definitely this. The cheap ones are nowhere near as good and usually full of big chunks of skin which is like chewing on plastic.

Agree. But for stews etc it's less important. For a full English I want decent ones though.

GetInTheBinThenGetInTheSea · 29/07/2023 23:40

It has to be the more expensive tinned cherry tomatoes for me. I am not happy if I have to use anything else.

ButterCrackers · 29/07/2023 23:41

I buy the cheapest tinned tomatoes because they are just tomatoes. No fuss.

PickAChew · 29/07/2023 23:42

Even when I was a flat broke student, I avoided most of the cheap brands because they were. So watery that t you needed more.

Now I avoid anything with added citric acid so only use mutti or cirio passata rustics (in jars but increasingly hard to get)

mastertomsmum · 29/07/2023 23:46

Different versions suit different recipes. Coop with herbs are great for batch cooking but not for everything. Budget ranges are watery, so need more work to build to a sauce. Passata is not everyone’s cup of tea

LesLavandes · 29/07/2023 23:47

Mutti

Dixiechickonhols · 29/07/2023 23:48

I think there’s a big difference and buy the mutti (stock up when 25% off)

Maverick101 · 29/07/2023 23:56

If I were buying tinned tomatoes in the UK I'd be wanting to look at the provenance.

Really cheap Italian tomatoes = what's effectively slave labour.

autienotnaughti · 30/07/2023 00:12

We season our food so cheap ones are fine

goingtotown · 30/07/2023 00:18

Sainsburys own brand not the basic, they're the same as Ciro.

neveradullmoment99 · 30/07/2023 00:19

Cucina by Aldi are cheap but vert good. Rich tomatoes, Not a lot of juice and barely any seeds.

EnthENd · 30/07/2023 00:21

Neither.

It makes a difference but the fancy ones aren't the best for all recipes.

DM swears by Napolina. I find they're good for Italian dishes but the tomato flavour is too strong for curries. Cheaper ones work better for curries to give a sauce base where the spice blend is the main source of flavour.

fuckityfuckityfuckfuck · 30/07/2023 00:25

I don't find any difference between mid-range and expensive but cheap cheap (value 38p type tins) are just red water with bits in.
