To think the nurse fibbed?

Had a smear this morning and while making conversation with the nurse, mentioned that I'd had difficulty with the speculum when my coil was being fitted.

After she'd finished up she said all the usual about there being a wait of up to 4 weeks for results, but that my cervix looked normal and my coil strings were definitely in the right place.

I was in a huge hurry leaving so almost didn't process what she'd said until I was out of the door but - I don't have a coil in anymore! I haven't for years! Indeed have had a vaginal scan, a second baby (and so multiple more scans!), a caesarean section etc since the coil exited my body. I definitely haven't had another fitted in some kind of fugue state. I'm completely baffled by why she'd say that about the strings when there can't have been any visible because they're not there. Is there any way there'd be something in there anatomically that might give the appearance of coil strings? I'm stumped!

Definitely get a second opinion x

A second opinion on what? The fact there is no coil in situ, when the op knows full well she has had it removed? I would be satisfied with my own opinion on that 😂
OP yes she lied. God knows why. Maybe didn’t look properly or forgot to look then lied to cover it. Who knows.

oviraptor21 · 25/07/2023 14:56

Or maybe she was thinking of the previous client. We all make mistakes.

No I meant with another nurse. I know the nurse lied 🙄

CountryStore · 25/07/2023 15:22

She was probably just running on autopilot. I expect she sees a lot of vaginas 🤷‍♀️

ZairWazAnOldLady · 25/07/2023 15:25

Maybe you have worms?

villamariavintrapp · 25/07/2023 15:26

Perhaps she just meant that she didn't see the coil anywhere that it shouldn't have been? So assumed since you said you'd had some problem having it fitted that it must be in the right place?

Do worms get into your cervix?

Ihavekids · 25/07/2023 15:28

Weird. This would play on my mind too. I'd get them to double check all was right... even though I can't imagine what could possibly be wrong....?

Do worms get into your cervix?

I believe they can colonise your vagina but have no idea if they get into the womb.

Do worms get into your cervix?

Threadworms can definitely get in the vagina, so yeah, they could certainly be chilling out in the cervical region.

They don't look anything like the strings of a coil though, so I doubt that's the issue here.

I’d have to get another app too and ask them to check what the nurse meant

Definitely nothing anatomical that looks like strings. I used to take a lot of smears.

Good thing is if she didn't get a good cell sample from your cervix then the sample will be rejected by the lab, so no risk that you won't get accurate results. They'll either be ok or need repeating.

As for why she said it - agree with others perhaps on autopilot or thinking of someone before you. Some nurses do a "smear clinic" where they do 3 or 4 in a row so all equipment and forms is out all in one go.

Or she could have just said it because she lied and realised afterwards you'd mentioned coil and she didn't check and therefore lied and said she did. Obviously this is shit of her.

AlanJohnsonsBeamer · 25/07/2023 15:54

Sounds like Autopilot to me. I'm terrible with that sometimes in my line of work.

I would call back if possible just to confirm over the phone. They must have notes.

DoIWantThis · 25/07/2023 15:55

If she lied that is awful. She should document everything, so ask for your notes to be checked and if 'coil threads seen' is on your medical record it needs looking in to. What else could she lie about?

I trust that as a previous poster mentioned - she may have been on auto pilot during a run of smears - still not good though.

longtompot · 25/07/2023 16:12

Do you have access online to your medical notes? I wonder if it would say anything on there?

Topseyt123 · 25/07/2023 16:19

I'd phone the surgery and ask for a call back, either from her or from your GP.

Just tell them you're confused. You have realised that this was said to you while on your way out of the consulting room door but there should be no coil present so could they please clarify?

placemats · 25/07/2023 16:21

So when was your last smear test previous to this one?

I would assume this too.

PickleBreath · 25/07/2023 16:22

I am going to have nightmares about vagina worms after this thread!

justteanbiscuits · 25/07/2023 16:24

Almost the same happened to me.

Except, it turned out I did have a coil!!! My medical notes all mention my coil removal, but there is one there! I had had a gynae op between smears, and can only presume they decided to put a coil in. I even have a copy of my notes from that op, and it doesn't mention a coil at all. It's fucking bizarre!

Pixie2015 · 25/07/2023 16:27

Think the nurse might have been on autopilot - call up and let receptionist know what was said and ask if nurse can call you to clarify

agent765 · 25/07/2023 16:35

You need to get this sorted, OP.

I was asked if I had a coil fitted at my last MRI. I've had 6 before but have never been asked about a coil. It didn't occur to me to ask why.

I was about to say, are you 100% sure one wasn’t fitted post c-section? The hospital I used to work in are very hot on this & I can imagine some doctors taking “consent” from women having an emergency CS who are in no fit state to agree.
